The main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has assured its supporters with readiness to feature candidates for local government By-Elections slated on August 24, 2015 in five wards which fall vacant after the 2014 tripartite elections.
The by-elections will be held in five wards namely Zomba central in Zomba, Chibanja in Mzuzu, Khwawa in Karonga, and Luchenza in Thyolo and Msikiti in Mangochi with the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) commencement of registration and verification of voters exercise started on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 till Sunday, July 19, 2015.
Maxwell Thyolo and Dr Jessie Kabwira, MCP’s Director of Elections and Spokesperson respectively were addressing the news conference on Wednesday, July, 2015 in the capital Lilongwe.
Apart from announcing the party’s readiness to participate in the local government by-elections, the two revealed that MCP’ central region committee elections were scheduled to take place on August 8, 2015 at its headquarters in the capital Lilongwe with 16 posts to be contested.
“MCP is very ready to take part in the forthcoming local government by-elections in all five wards as capable candidates have been identified to compete. We are sure of getting good results at the end of the elections regarding to the team featured to partake the challenge.
“The party is very optimistic that Mec will handle the elections in credible, transparent and fair manner that the results are accepted by all political parties taking part”, urges Maxwell Thyolo.
On central region committee elections, Dr. Kabwira assured all interested candidates’ safety during the Election Day that all measures have been put in place for better outcome of the results.
“The central region committee elections will be paramount as it’s the party’s base where all decisions are made. This is the reasons we have intensified the security that no one disrupts its proceedings.
“We are appealing to youths taking part in the regional elections so that the party is blended with the old and young generation aimed at rejuvenating the party’s structures a head of 2019 elections”, appeals Dr Kabwira.
Over 460 delegates from central and lakeshore committees will take part in the elections as 16 posts are expected to be contested. The central region committee election comes after the party conducted successfully the same in southern region on June 20, 2015.
