MEC’s Voter verification resumes this Wednesday: Malawi Elections

LILONGWE (MaraPost)–Voter registration exercise, which was suspended two weeks go due to some irregularities, resumes this Wednesday, April 9, 2014.

The Malawi Electoral Commission Electoral (MEC) has since assured eligible voters and all stakeholders of smooth voter verification process, claiming it has worked on the inconsistencies that were discovered in the voters roll and are now ready to resume the voter verification exercise.

The first phase of the exercise is set to start on 9th to 13th April, with the councils of Nsanje, Chikhwawa, Blantyre City, Blantyre District, Mwanza, Neno,Chiradzulu, Phalombe, Thyolo, Luchenza, Zomba City and Zomba district.

In a statement, MEC says the dates for other phases will be announced at a later date.

The exercise was earlier suspended just a day after it was started in some selected districts due to what MEC said logistical challenges and inadequacies in the preliminary voters’ roll.

The suspension attracted mixed reactions by members of the public, commentatorsand leaders of political parties who expressed worry that this would compromise preparations for the May 20 elections.-MARAPOST.
