Opposition lawmakers demand MEC’s audit on voters registration

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Following the missing of voter names, including a senior Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) commissioner, opposition parties want the commission to be audited.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) Machinga legislator, Ester Jolobala, said that the temporary voting that MEC conducted to test the systematic machine will be part of the general elections.

Jolobala stated that auditing the data base will guarantee its integrity.

According to her, the Center for Multiparty Democracy gathered all the parties to voice their grievances, but the MEC did not pay attention to them.

We are worried that MEC will use the trial data base to conduct the elections, which is why we are calling for the audit of the machine, said Jolobala.

According to George Chaponda, the opposition leader, trusting the MEC’s accountability is challenging because the MEC is not holding them accountable for the machine.

Chaponda said that the minister’s response was not convincing.

During the Parliament debate ,the Minister of Justice, Titus Mvalo said , assured all parties that the MEC machines are intact and will handle the re-elections properly.

Mvalo said the opposition parties have hurriedly complained about the database, saying that they might be in the system when thoroughly searched.
