Opposition Leader Mary Navicha cheers up Nkhotakota floods survivors

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)- The newly appointed Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Malawi Parliament who is also Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker for Thyolo Thava Mary Navicha on Friday, March 1, 2024 left her parliamentary duties to cherish survivors of floods that has hit hard the lakeshore district of Nkhotakota.

Upon visiting the flooded area, Dwangwa, Navicha, who is also DPP Director of Women, encouraged survivors to be strong while assuring them that she will use her power to mobilise resources towards their recovery from the loss and damage experienced.

Navicha was accompanied by DPP Chifundo Makande and she is the first politician to visit and cherish survivors in the camps.

President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance government is yet to visit the flood areas as Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has intestfied rescuing campaign.

So, far the floods have claimed one life and displaced 7 000 people, including 900 who were trapped on Wednesday but have now been rescued, data from district officials show.

Nkhotakota district information officer Wongani Mkandawire on Thursday said a security guard at a lodge in the district died after a rescue canoe capsized.

The displaced people are from traditional authorities (T/As) Malengachanzi, Kanyenda and Mphonde. So far, nine evacuation camps have been set up in T/As Kanyenda and Mphonde.
