In a show of unity, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), and United Transformation Movement (UTM) have jointly presented a list of demands to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) ahead of the 2025 elections.
The opposition parties are seeking to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
Hon. Namalomba, spokesperson for the DPP, outlined the key demands during a joint press briefing.
These include the use of manual transmission of results, as employed in 2020, to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
Additionally, the parties are calling for the MEC to abandon its newly acquired software to prevent potential manipulation or technical issues.
Furthermore, the parties are demanding that the MEC appoint independent ICT auditors, agreed upon by all stakeholders, to provide an additional layer of oversight.
They also emphasized the need for the National Registration Bureau (NRB) to work alongside the MEC across the country to guarantee everyone’s right to vote.
The secretary-generals of DPP, AFORD, and UTM have jointly signed this statement, emphasizing that these issues must be addressed before the registration date commences.
If not, they’ve warned of potential public protests and nationwide shutdowns.
This united front comes after the DPP’s convention, where former President Arthur Peter Mutharika announced the party’s alliance with AFORD, UTM, and the United Democratic Front (UDF) for the 2025 elections.
However, in a surprising turn of events, the UDF has since withdrawn from the joint press briefing.
The opposition parties’ demands aim to prevent electoral disputes and ensure a smooth voting process.
The MEC has yet to respond to these demands, but the stakes are high ahead of the 2025 elections.
As the country prepares for the polls, all eyes are on the MEC to address these concerns and guarantee a free and fair electoral process.
The opposition parties’ unity and determination to ensure transparency will undoubtedly shape the electoral landscape in the coming months.
Will the MEC meet the opposition parties’ demands, or will this lead to further tensions? Only time will tell.
One thing is certain – the 2025 Malawi elections just got a lot more interesting.
The move by the opposition parties has sparked mixed reactions from various stakeholders, with some hailing it as a bold step towards ensuring electoral integrity, while others view it as a ploy to discredit the MEC.
As tensions rise, Malawians await the MEC’s response to these demands, knowing that the outcome will have far-reaching implications for the country’s democratic future.
