Chinatu confident of gold as Malawi prepares for 2026 AUSC Region 5 youth games

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The President of the Table Tennis Association, Kelechi Kenneth Chinatu, has expressed satisfaction with the level of preparation by Malawi’s athletes ahead of the 2026 AUSC Region 5 Youth Games scheduled to take place in Maputo, Mozambique this December.

Chinatu said he is impressed with the commitment and progress shown by the players during training, noting that the team is well-positioned to compete at a high level during the regional competition.

Currently, Team Malawi is in camp at the Bingu National Stadium, where they are undergoing intensive training.

This marks their fourth training camp since preparations for the tournament began, reflecting a structured and consistent build-up toward the games.

He further expressed confidence that Malawi can secure gold medals at the tournament, emphasizing that the current squad has valuable international experience.

Most of the athletes previously represented the country at the 2025 Youth Games in Namibia, an exposure he believes has significantly strengthened their competitive edge.

“Our athletes have gained important experience from past competitions, and this gives us strong hope for gold medal performances in Maputo,” said Chinatu.

Despite the optimism, Chinatu called on the Malawi Government to increase investment in table tennis.

He stressed that the sport holds great potential to bring glory to the nation if given adequate support and resources.

“Table tennis has a bright future in Malawi. With more investment, we can achieve even greater success on the international stage,” he added.

Chinatu also expressed gratitude to the Malawi Sports Council for its continued support toward the team’s preparations, describing the assistance as crucial in ensuring the athletes are ready for the upcoming games.

The AUSC Region 5 Youth Games, to be held in Maputo, Mozambique, will bring together young athletes from across Southern Africa, providing a platform for emerging talent to showcase their skills on a regional stage.

No mercy if a stadium fails the test: Kamuzu Stadium

There are moments in football administration when sentiment must give way to hard truth. This is one of them. The latest decision to bar Kamuzu Stadium from hosting elite matches is not harsh it is necessary.

This ground has lived many lives. Built in the colonial era as Rangely Stadium, renamed under Hastings Kamuzu Banda, rebranded again during Bakili Muluzi’s tenure and restored to its current name under Bingu wa Mutharika. But names do not win matches and they certainly do not guarantee safety.

Weekend Sports Mirror is not concerned with the politics of naming. The concern is structural integrity and the picture is worrying.

Parts of the stadium were closed as far back as 2012 due to safety risks. That alone should have triggered a long term redevelopment plan.

Instead, Malawi’s flagship venue has limped from one season to the next, patched up just enough to remain usable but never truly modernized.

Fast forward to 2025, through the club licensing system, the Football Association of Malawi flagged the stadium as unfit.

Temporary fixes were made and somehow the 2025/26 season squeezed through. But football governance is not about squeezing through it is about meeting standards.

Now, as the new season approaches, the same issues have resurfaced, unreliable water supply, poor sanitation facilities and unstable electricity. These are not minor inconveniences, they are basic requirements.

A stadium without functional toilets, consistent power and safe stands is not a venue it is a liability.
What makes the situation more frustrating is the lack of visible urgency.

A recent visit by the MaraviPost sports desk found no meaningful renovation work underway. Cutting grass outside the stadium cannot mask the deeper decay within.

Fans in Blantyre have every right to feel disappointed. This is a football city. The passion is real, the loyalty unquestioned. But passion cannot override safety. No supporter should risk their life for 90 minutes of football.

There is also a broader lesson here for Malawian football. Licensing rules are not bureaucratic obstacles, they are safeguards. They exist to protect players, officials and supporters. When Football Association of Malawi enforces them, it is not being difficult it is doing its job.

The uncomfortable truth is that Kamuzu Stadium may have reached the end of its natural life. Incremental repairs will not solve structural fatigue.

At some point, the country must confront a difficult but necessary decision, rebuild or risk catastrophe.
Because if current conditions persist, it is not a question of if something will go wrong but when.

Malawi cannot afford to learn this lesson the hard way.No mercy, then. Not for the stadium but for the standards that keep the game alive.

Bushiri, Kamangila clash online as defamation threats fly: But whose interests?

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Prophet Shepherd Bushiri has ignited debate on social media after responding to a post authored by lawyer Alexious Kamangila.

Kamangila wrote that Bushiri’s hands could not be considered clean even if washed with BUMU, a popular local detergent, accusing the prophet of involvement in bad deeds.

The lawyer’s remarks quickly circulated online, drawing mixed reactions from followers of both men.

Bushiri hit back with a pointed reply, stating that if Kamangila’s head “worked properly” he would have sued him for the statement.

Instead, the prophet said he would pray for the lawyer with love rather than take legal action.

The exchange did not end there. Shortly after Bushiri’s response, Kamangila posted again, challenging the prophet to proceed and sue him if he wished.

Kamangila argued that he stood by his comments and was ready to defend them in court.

The situation has since escalated further. Kamangila now says he has his own intention to sue Bushiri, citing the prophet’s claim that his head does not work properly.

He described Bushiri’s remarks as defamatory and damaging to his professional reputation as a legal practitioner.

The online back-and-forth has attracted widespread attention, with supporters of both figures weighing in across Facebook and WhatsApp groups.

Some have called for restraint and dialogue, while others have urged the two to settle the matter out of court.

By late Thursday, neither Bushiri nor Kamangila had confirmed filing formal legal papers.

Representatives for Bushiri’s Enlightened Christian Gathering Church were not immediately available for comment. Kamangila told reporters he is consulting his legal team on the next steps.

Legal experts say the dispute could test defamation and social media speech boundaries in Malawi, where public figures increasingly clash online.

Both parties have large followings, and the case could set a precedent on how personal attacks on social platforms are handled.

Observers are watching to see whether the war of words will move from Facebook to the courtroom, or whether the two will opt for reconciliation.

Ceasefire in Lebanon sparks hope for US-Iran deal

A 10-day ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon has brought a glimmer of hope that a broader deal between the US and Iran may be within reach.

The truce, announced by US President Donald Trump, is seen as a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The ceasefire, which came into effect on April 16, 2026, is intended to halt active fighting and create conditions for further negotiations towards a longer-term settlement.

It marks the first direct diplomatic engagement between Israel and Lebanon in decades.

Tehran has welcomed the truce, with Iran’s Foreign Ministry framing it as part of a broader agreement with the US to pause the regional conflict.

However, major challenges remain, including Iran’s demand for a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon and the US’s concerns over Iran’s nuclear program.

The ceasefire agreement has been met with cautious optimism, with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam welcoming the development as a “central Lebanese demand”.

However, Hezbollah has warned that it will respond to any violations of the truce, raising concerns about the stability of the agreement.

The US and Iran have been engaged in indirect talks, with Pakistan playing a key role in mediating the negotiations.

A second round of talks is expected to take place in Islamabad, although no date has been set.

The ceasefire has also sparked hopes of an easing of tensions in the region, with global oil prices and stock markets reacting positively to the news.

However, analysts warn that significant challenges lie ahead, including the need for a comprehensive agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon.

Battle for bragging rights as Blantyre giants ignite Lilongwe in Charity Shield thriller

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The stage is set. The lights are bright. And the pride of Blantyre is on the line.

Football’s fiercest rivalry will once again take center stage as FCB Nyasa Big Bullets FC lock horns with sworn enemies Mighty Wanderers FC in a blockbuster NBS Bank Charity Shield clash at the imposing Bingu National Stadium.

For the Bullets, it’s a mission to defend their legacy — a chance to lift the trophy for a record eighth time and reaffirm their dominance in Malawian football.

For the Wanderers, it’s something deeper — a shot at redemption, history, and finally ending their long wait for a first Charity Shield crown after five painful attempts.

But beneath the surface of this showdown lies unfinished business.

Last season, the Nomads stunned their rivals, beating Bullets three times in the heated Blantyre Derby — a result that still lingers like a scar.

Now, the Bullets are out for more than just silverware — they want revenge.

“We are ready for the fight,” declared Bullets head coach Gilbert Chirwa, his tone firm with intent. “Forget last season. This is a new beginning, a new vision. We have rebuilt, we are stronger, and we are coming for victory.”

Chirwa revealed that his squad has been re-energized with six new signings, players he believes have seamlessly blended into the team, sharpening both hunger and harmony.

“The preseason showed us our strength — our coordination, our unity. This team is ready to rise,” he said.

But the Nomads are not backing down.

Despite their recent dominance, McDonald Mtetemera, assistant coach of Mighty Wanderers, insists there will be no complacency.

“Last season means nothing now,” he warned. “We are not here to remember — we are here to win. We will go all out for the Nomads.”

As the two giants prepare to collide, history looms large.

Bullets remain the most successful side in the competition, while Silver Strikers FC stand as the only other team to have tasted glory.

But records, form, and statistics will mean little when the whistle blows.

Because this is more than a match.

It is pride. It is revenge, It is history waiting to be written.

And as the 2026 football season kicks off in dramatic fashion, all eyes turn to Lilongwe — where only one giant will rise.

NBS Bank raised Charity Shield stakes to MK100 million in bold show of commitment and proceeds from the match will fund the Green Girls Boarding initiative at Emvuyeni Community Day Secondary School in Mzimba District, in partnership with Plan International Malawi.

The Project aims at transforming the lives of 500 learners by introducing clean cooking solutions and renewable energy, creating a safer, Healthier, and more sustainable environment.

FDH extends promotion, changes prize destination to Mauritius

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-FDH Bank Plc has announced the change of the grand prize destination for its ‘Swipe to Dubai’ Promotion, which was initially set for Dubai, to Mauritius due to the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The promotion, which was launched in February and initially scheduled to run until June, has also been extended to allow customers more time to participate through transactions.

As part of the changes, the campaign has also been rebranded to ‘Swipe to Mauritius’.

During the event, the bank also conducted its first monthly draw, awarding K100,000 each to 25 winners.

Speaking during the announcement on Friday, FDH Plc Acting Head of Marketing, Ronald Chimchere, said the Bank prioritised the safety and security of its customers while still offering an enjoyable experience.

“We have made the considered decision to change the grand prize destination from Dubai to Mauritius.

“Mauritius offers an equally exceptional experience, and we are confident our customers will enjoy a relaxing, memorable getaway,” said Chimchere.

Chimchere added that despite the change in destination and name, the promotion mechanics remain unchanged, with the campaign now extended to July to give customers ample time to participate.

Chimchere also encouraged customers to continue transacting to stand a chance of winning.

“Customers simply need to swipe any bank card on an FDH POS machine with a minimum transaction of K20,000, write their name and phone number on the back of the receipt, and place it in the designated entry box at selected outlets, including Ekhaya and Chipiku stores,” said Chimchere.

Sports Minister Gangata calls for serious investment in youth-led community initiatives

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Sports Minister Alfred Gangata has called for stronger collaboration and increased investment in youth-led community initiatives.

Gangata observes that “Its a way of accelerating economic growth and promoting sustainable development in Malawi”

Speaking during the CorpsAfrica Pitch Day held in Lilongwe on Friday, The Sports Minister said youth-driven projects must be properly coordinated and aligned with national priorities to ensure they deliver meaningful impact on the economy.

Board Representative for CorpsAfrica and Director of People and Culture for CorpsAfrica Global, Arthur Nkosi, said the organisation has deployed 83 volunteers in 83 communities, where they are supporting residents to develop local solutions aimed at improving livelihoods and building resilience.

Echoing the same, Marian Mshani from Kachulu Community in Zomba District presented a sunflower oil production project seeking over US$ 1million to acquire equipment and improve production capacity in order to generate sustainable income for local families.

The Pitch Day, held under the theme “Powering Community-Led Change,” provided a platform for young innovators to showcase community-based solutions and access funding, mentorship, and partnerships for sustainable development.

Atupele Muluzi calls for national reflection as Malawi faces critical crossroads

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-President of the United Democratic Front (UDF), Atupele Muluzi, has urged Malawians to reflect on the country’s direction, warning that the nation stands at a critical turning point.

In an interview with Maravi Post,Muluzi questioned the country’s collective resolve, asking whether citizens are prepared to confront ongoing challenges or continue tolerating a system that fuels suffering.

“Malawi stands at a crossroads. The real question is: What do we truly want as a nation?” he said.

He cautioned against ignoring the hardships faced by citizens, which he attributed to carelessness and what he described as a predatory system.

Instead, he called for a decisive shift toward meaningful solutions, institutional reform, and support for leaders committed to driving change.

Muluzi emphasized that progress will require bold leadership and collaboration across multiple sectors.

He noted that reform must be championed not only within government but also by opposition parties, civil society, the media, and the business community.

The UDF leader said those within government must demonstrate honesty by acknowledging failures, while external stakeholders must remain committed to shaping a new national direction.

Muluzi competed in the September 16 ,2025 presidential election race and failed to make a significant impact as he finished outside the leading contenders in a crowded field, underscoring the UDF’s continued struggle to regain its past electoral strength.

Lionel Messi buys Spanish third-tier club UE Cornellà in full takeover

MADRID-(MaraviPost)-Argentine football icon Lionel Messi has completed a full takeover of Spanish club UE Cornellà, which competes in Spain’s third tier.

The club, founded in 1951, will now be under Messi’s ownership after the Inter Miami forward acquired 100 percent of the team.

The move marks Messi’s first major step into football club ownership in Europe since leaving Barcelona in 2021.

UE Cornellà, based in the municipality of Cornellà de Llobregat in Catalonia, currently plays in the Primera Federación, the third level of the Spanish football league system.

The club has a modest stadium, Nou Municipal, and has built a reputation for developing young talent while maintaining strong community ties in the Barcelona metropolitan area.

Sources close to the deal indicated that Messi’s acquisition was finalized this week, with all legal and administrative processes concluded to transfer full ownership to the World Cup winner.

Financial details of the transaction have not been publicly disclosed, but the takeover gives Messi complete control of the club’s sporting and commercial operations.

The purchase signals Messi’s long-term commitment to Spanish football despite his current playing career in Major League Soccer.

UE Cornellà has historically been known for its youth academy and has previously faced Barcelona in Copa del Rey fixtures, drawing attention for its competitive spirit against larger clubs.

Club officials welcomed the takeover, describing it as a transformative moment for UE Cornellà.

In a brief statement, the club said Messi’s involvement would bring global visibility, investment in infrastructure, and new opportunities for player development.

Supporters gathered outside the club offices on Thursday, with many expressing optimism that the Argentine’s leadership could elevate the team to higher divisions.

Messi, 38, has not yet outlined his full vision for the club, but analysts expect upgrades to training facilities, expanded scouting networks, and increased commercial partnerships.

His brand power is likely to attract sponsors and international interest rarely seen at the third-tier level in Spain.

The acquisition also carries symbolic weight. Cornellà is located just outside Barcelona, the city where Messi spent more than two decades and became the club’s all-time leading scorer.

Owning a team in the region reconnects him with the Catalan football landscape, albeit outside the Camp Nou spotlight.

There is no indication that Messi plans to play for UE Cornellà. His current contract with Inter Miami runs through the end of the 2026 MLS season, and he remains focused on his playing commitments and the 2026 World Cup.

However, the takeover positions him to shape the club’s future from an executive perspective.

Local authorities in Cornellà de Llobregat have congratulated the club and pledged support for any planned improvements that benefit the community.

The municipality views the investment as a potential boost for local sport and economic activity.

UE Cornellà’s immediate priority will be the ongoing league campaign, where the team is aiming to consolidate its position in the Primera Federación.

Longer term, promotion to LaLiga2 would represent a major milestone under the new ownership.

Messi’s representatives did not respond to Maravipost questionaire for comment at the time of publication.

The club is expected to hold a press conference in the coming days to present the new project and leadership structure.

Pope Leo XIV condemns exploitation of Africa’s resources-“Foreigners fuel conflicts”

Pope Leo XIV, leader of the Catholic Church worldwide, has condemned the practice of people coming to Africa to steal resources that God blessed the continent with.

Speaking in Cameroon, the Pope said many of the problems Africa faces are caused by individuals from other countries who arrive with the intention of exploiting Africans for their own gain.

He noted that those who plunder resources such as gold often use the profits to purchase weapons of war, a practice he described as unacceptable.

“Africa is richly blessed by God, but these blessings are being taken by others who do not have the interests of Africans at heart,” Pope Leo XIV said. “The wealth from our soil is used to buy arms that bring more suffering to our people.”

The Pontiff stressed that the cycle of exploitation and conflict must end, calling on both foreign actors and local collaborators to respect the dignity and rights of African nations.

He urged leaders and citizens to protect the continent’s resources for the benefit of present and future generations.

Pope Leo XIV’s remarks come during his pastoral visit to Africa, which began earlier this week.

The Holy Father is still on the continent and is expected to visit several countries, including Ghana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nigeria, in the coming days.

In Cameroon, he met with clergy, government officials, and civil society groups, emphasizing peace, justice, and responsible stewardship of natural wealth.

He appealed to the international community to support fair trade and to stop fueling conflict through the illicit purchase of minerals and other resources.

The Pope’s message was received with applause from congregants and leaders who have long raised concerns about illegal mining and the link between resource exploitation and armed violence in parts of the continent.

Church officials said the Pope’s tour aims to strengthen faith, promote reconciliation, and advocate for the poor and marginalized.

His call against resource plunder is expected to feature prominently in his addresses during the next stops on his African visit.
