Battle for bragging rights as Blantyre giants ignite Lilongwe in Charity Shield thriller

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The stage is set. The lights are bright. And the pride of Blantyre is on the line.

Football’s fiercest rivalry will once again take center stage as FCB Nyasa Big Bullets FC lock horns with sworn enemies Mighty Wanderers FC in a blockbuster NBS Bank Charity Shield clash at the imposing Bingu National Stadium.

For the Bullets, it’s a mission to defend their legacy — a chance to lift the trophy for a record eighth time and reaffirm their dominance in Malawian football.

For the Wanderers, it’s something deeper — a shot at redemption, history, and finally ending their long wait for a first Charity Shield crown after five painful attempts.

But beneath the surface of this showdown lies unfinished business.

Last season, the Nomads stunned their rivals, beating Bullets three times in the heated Blantyre Derby — a result that still lingers like a scar.

Now, the Bullets are out for more than just silverware — they want revenge.

“We are ready for the fight,” declared Bullets head coach Gilbert Chirwa, his tone firm with intent. “Forget last season. This is a new beginning, a new vision. We have rebuilt, we are stronger, and we are coming for victory.”

Chirwa revealed that his squad has been re-energized with six new signings, players he believes have seamlessly blended into the team, sharpening both hunger and harmony.

“The preseason showed us our strength — our coordination, our unity. This team is ready to rise,” he said.

But the Nomads are not backing down.

Despite their recent dominance, McDonald Mtetemera, assistant coach of Mighty Wanderers, insists there will be no complacency.

“Last season means nothing now,” he warned. “We are not here to remember — we are here to win. We will go all out for the Nomads.”

As the two giants prepare to collide, history looms large.

Bullets remain the most successful side in the competition, while Silver Strikers FC stand as the only other team to have tasted glory.

But records, form, and statistics will mean little when the whistle blows.

Because this is more than a match.

It is pride. It is revenge, It is history waiting to be written.

And as the 2026 football season kicks off in dramatic fashion, all eyes turn to Lilongwe — where only one giant will rise.

NBS Bank raised Charity Shield stakes to MK100 million in bold show of commitment and proceeds from the match will fund the Green Girls Boarding initiative at Emvuyeni Community Day Secondary School in Mzimba District, in partnership with Plan International Malawi.

The Project aims at transforming the lives of 500 learners by introducing clean cooking solutions and renewable energy, creating a safer, Healthier, and more sustainable environment.

Malawi FA opens gates for Scorchers fans with eyes for WAFCON qualification

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced that fans will enjoy free entry to the Bingu National Stadium for the second leg of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier between Malawi’s Scorchers and Angola this Tuesday.

FAM President Fleetwood Haiya made the announcement after the Scorchers touched down at Kamuzu International Airport on Saturday night following their goalless first-leg encounter in Luanda.

Haiya emphasized that the free-entry initiative applies to open stands only, saying it is part of FAM’s effort to give Malawians an opportunity to fully back their national women’s team in this crucial fixture.

“We want every Malawian to come out in large numbers and show love for the Scorchers. These girls have worked hard and deserve our full support as they fight for a spot at the 2026 WAFCON,” Haiya said.

The Scorchers received a heroes’ welcome at the airport, where their official sponsors, National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Plc, organized a warm reception complete with music and cheers.

The bank reaffirmed its commitment to promoting women’s football, describing the team’s determination in Angola as a source of pride for the nation.

Team captain Tabitha Chawinga expressed gratitude to FAM and supporters, saying the free-entry gesture will serve as motivation for the players to deliver victory at home.

“Playing in front of a packed Bingu Stadium will give us that extra push. We are ready to finish the job,” she said.

The Tuesday encounter is expected to draw thousands of supporters, with fans already mobilizing through social media to paint the stands red and white the Scorchers’ national colors.

Malawi’s technical panel, led by head coach Lovemore Fazili, remains confident of a strong performance, citing the team’s solid display in the away fixture.

“We created good chances in Angola. At home, with the crowd behind us, we believe the goals will come,” Fazili noted.

Security and logistics preparations are reportedly underway, with FAM working closely with stadium management and law enforcement to ensure smooth entry and safety for all spectators.

Bingu national stadium VIP chairs in dilapidated state despite raking in millions

By Jones Gadama

The VIP section of the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe is in a deplorable state, with chairs broken and in disrepair.

This is despite the stadium generating millions of kwacha in revenue, particularly during recent high-profile events such as the Comoros games.

According to sources, the stadium raked in close to K80 million during the two Comoros games.

However, it appears that none of this revenue has been allocated towards maintaining the stadium’s facilities, including the VIP section.

The Bingu National Stadium was built by the Chinese government, and the Malawi government is currently repaying the loan.

However, it seems that the Ministry of Sports, which manages the stadium, is not generating enough income to rehabilitate the chairs, let alone maintain the stadium’s overall infrastructure.

The dilapidated state of the VIP chairs is not only an eyesore but also a reflection of the lack of prioritization of maintenance and upkeep by the Ministry of Sports.

It is unacceptable that a stadium of this caliber, which hosts high-profile events and generates significant revenue, cannot maintain its facilities to a satisfactory standard.

The Ministry of Sports needs to take immediate action to address the issue of the VIP chairs and the overall maintenance of the stadium.

This includes allocating a sufficient budget for maintenance and upkeep, as well as ensuring that revenue generated by the stadium is used effectively to improve its facilities.

The Bingu National Stadium is a national asset, and it is imperative that it is maintained to a standard that reflects the country’s pride and reputation.

The Ministry of Sports must take responsibility for ensuring that the stadium is properly maintained, and that revenue generated by the stadium is used to improve its facilities, rather than being squandered or mismanaged.

Malawi’s Bingu Stadium not fit to host CAF games

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Confederations of African Football (Caf) has banned Bingu National Stadium from hosting Caf Champions League matches due to its poor condition.

This comes ahead of FCB Nyasa Big Bullets’ Caf Champions League match against Red Arrows from Zambia.

This means the people’s team will play away from home.

In a communication to all Member Associations, Bingu National Stadium has been excluded from the list of stadia approved for this year’s tournament.

Caf has indicated that the list of approved stadia is specifically for the Caf Champions League or Confederations Cup.

The ban comes one month before the Flames host Burundi in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers.

The stadium has been hosting Kenya as its home ground for its World Cup and Afcon games

Potential sponsors deserting Malawi’s Bingu Stadium

Bingu National Stadium

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Bingu National Stadium (BNS) will suffer significant financial loss as TNM and MultiChoice Malawi have decided against renewing the branding deals which generated MK30 million annually, it has emerged

MultiChoice and TNM have, for the past years, branded the outside and the interior with their colours and logos as part of their marketing strategies.

The TNM deal was the much worthier of the two as government generated MK20 million every year. It expires next month.

According The Nation Newspaper, the company has said it is no longer renewing the deal after an analysis of its branding components.

The communication to BNS management reads in part: “following a review of our current branding properties, TNM has decided not to renew its branding contract for the stadium following the expiry of the contract on June 31 2020.”

BNS has not been hosting big matches after the rehabilitation of the Kamuzu Stadium.

In a response to a questionnaire TNM head of brand and communications Louis Chipofya dismissed suggestions that lack of activities had a hand in their decision.

He said: “TNM’s decision not to renew the branding contract is informed by strategic direction. We entered into a contract to brand part of the stadium to meet certain objectives which have since been met; hence, the non-renewal.”

Chipofya, however, hailed BNS as a good marketing platform.

“BNS is Malawi’s biggest soccer venue and plays hosts to major soccer matches and other non-soccer events. As such, it offers a great platform for brand exposure which TNM has enjoyed during its contract period,” he said.

MultiChoice contract also expired last month and the digital satelitte television provider has communicated to the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture that it is not renewing it, according to sources.

The company was paying government MK10 million annually. However, their officials were not available for comment.

However, the ministry’s spokesperson Symon Mbvundula referred the matter to the Principal Secretary Chancy Simwaka who said he was not aware that the two companies were not renewing the contracts.

Last month, The Nation reported that FAM shuns BNS for Flames matches sanctioned by CAF and Fifa because the stadium’s permanent perimeter adverts, like those of TNM and MultiChoice, infringe on the football governing bodies’ contracts with their sponsors.

The 45 000-seater stadium has hosted four Flames matches against Morocco, Comoros Island, Madagascar and Lesotho since it was opened four years ago while Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, in contrast, has hosted 11 games during the same period

My first underwear taught me a very important life lesson

Diego Maradona
Diego Armando Maradona is an Argentine retired professional footballer and current manager of Mexican second division club Dorados. Many in the sport, including football writers, players, and fans, regard him as one of the greatest football players of all time. He was joint FIFA Player of the 20th Century with Pelé

Written by Patseni Mauka

I got my first underwear very late in my childhood. It was so late I thought every misfortune I met was because I didn’t have underwear. I am sure I am not the only one of my generation who got this enviable development very late. Most people of my generation grew up in poverty. Having an underwear was a luxury. It was not a priority for cash-strapped parents. They had to prioritize bringing food on the table. Not underwear.

Each time I went to the Wednesday or Friday market days, my eyes were always set on stalls selling different kinds of underwear. Some complete with Diego Maradona photos printed on the front and back. We called these underwear ‘madiego’. The material was usually almost 100 percent polyester. One would have to be careful not to catch fire with such underwear, for polyester is highly inflammable. I would look at them admiringly and wonder when I would get my chance to wear them and show my friends that I had joined the club of ‘the civilization’ of wearing underwear.

Many market days went without papa buying me one. Then one day I had a stroke of luck. Papa told me that he would buy me two sets of underwear. I can’t remember whether this was a gift for passing exams or for being a good son but what I remember most is the feeling this brought. Words can’t express how excited I was. Finally, I had my chance to wear underwear. Friends would know that I wore underwear. Not just any other underwear, but complete with printed photos of the famous footballer, the Argentine, Diego Maradona. I had my own diegos.

One of the most important reasons I was happy was that I would be able to approach girls with confidence knowing that I wore underwear. Who can talk to a girl while not wearing underwear? It’s unthinkable, right? To cut a long story short, all the girls I thought would like me because of my diegos refused my proposals. I learnt that underwear didn’t improve my chances of getting a girlfriend. It was just a belief I had because of youth naivety.  Because I got my underwear very late, I thought I would easily get girls approval. Poor I didn’t know that getting girls depends on many other factors.

DPP cadets setting the example of planting trees

Fast forward to many years later, I have noted that some people have not yet learnt that success depends on many factors. It’s not about one thing. This applies to many different aspects of life including politics. In Malawi, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is busy making the same mistake I made a few decades ago. Having been in power for almost five years without improving the livelihoods of Malawians, they think some small roads, upgrades of some tertiary education institutions and a few roundabouts will be enough to hoodwink Malawians into believing that it deserves another term in office.

With about five months to go before the next elections, DPP is desperate to show that they have done something with our taxes. A day doesn’t pass without seeing paid loyal blue painted cadets posting pictures of the same short road, a roundabout and old projects done by the late former President Bingu WA Mutharika. The attempts to make us believe they have achieved something are hilarious.

One of the projects being constantly posted on Facebook is the rehabilitation and construction of a dual carriageway from Bingu National Stadium in Area 49 to Parliament Building in Lilongwe. The road is just 4.6-kilometre. According to reports, it has been over a year since the construction of the road started.

The project is reportedly being financed by a 7 billion Kwacha loan obtained from NBS Bank by Roads Fund Administration (RFA). The facility will be repaid over five years using the fuel levy which is managed by RFA and is payable by coupons at the 91-day Treasury bill tenor. In short, it’s the Malawian tax payer footing the bill. It’s our fuel tax money. But according to DPP wisdom, such projects mean they are ‘actualizing an election landslide victory’ and we should say thank you to Peter Mutharika and DPP for ‘developing’ Malawi.

Another project that DPP has jumped to claim is the infrastructure development at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR). Most of the structures being built at LUANAR were funded by the Norwegian government after Malawi government requested for a grant in June, 2012. The agreement for financing was signed in 2014. Even if DPP wanted to claim this grant, it was not in charge of government in June 2012. It’s just an embarrassing attempt to show something.

The message DPP should get is that an average Malawian doesn’t care about last minute small projects designed to show something for the five years of DPP reign of mediocrity. What matters to the common man is how his life has been affected by DPP policies or lack thereof. Things that matter to the average person are the cost of living, access to high quality health services, access to good education and other things that affect daily survival.

While a little improved road infrastructure is helpful, a holistic approach to the improvement of livelihoods is what matters. What use is a roundabout if one can’t afford to buy fuel because businesses are not doing well? Of what use is a dual carriageway if low salaried civil servants can’t afford money for a minibus fare and have to walk to work every day?

Many people are dying of treatable illnesses in hospitals due to lack of proper medical equipment and regular medicines. Pregnant mothers and unborn babies are dying because of lack of proper medical facilities and equipment which can detect maternal problems earlier enough to prevent such deaths. A show off roundabout cannot help ease such problems.

Deserving students are dropping out of schools while the president spends millions of Kwachas to organize beer parties for youths and civil servants to buy votes. Primary school kids are learning under trees while billions of Kwachas are lost to corruption that spreads its tentacles right up to the presidency. The sad stories are many and these are the issues that matter most.

Since DPP came into government in 2014, the cost of living has risen by over 50 percent. In the same period Malawi has moved from sixth to third poorest country in the world and over 85 percent of Malawians believe the country is moving towards the wrong direction. These are the statistics that matter, not number of roundabouts.

Just like Malawian citizens share sad stories they face and see in their daily lives due to government incompetence, they would do the same if the stories of tragedy changed to stories of hope and prosperity. The government would not need to employ unpatriotic characters to convince the electorate that they have done wonders. Just like any good merchandise, good work would speak for itself.

If DPP believes a few taxpayer funded kilometers of double lanes, roundabouts and a little donor funded infrastructure development is enough to fool Malawians into thinking that’s the best a government can do in an entire period of five years, they will wake up surprised like I did when I got my first underwear.

Ten reasons why Prophet Bushiri’s Malawi Crusade at Bingu Stadium on Saturday, September 29 is a must attend event

By Nenenji Mlangeni

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Leader of Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Prophet Shepherd Bushiri will this Saturday, September 29, host the first ever  Crusade at Bingu National  Stadium (BNS) in the capital Lilongwe, Malawi.

So, below are reasons why the crusade is a must attend event:

  • If you haven’t received Jesus, Prophet Bushiri will teach you deep revelations of being born-again and, further, lead you to Jesus.
  • If you still doubt that ‘God Is Still Speaking Today’, Prophet Bushiri will demonstrate to you how God speaks to him, every day, through signs and wonders.
  • If you still believe that Prophet Bushiri only is out for fame and fortune; come and watch how he glorifies God for everything he is, has and owns. His mission to make Jesus more famous.
  • If you still do not believe that the sick can be healed, the lame can walk, the deaf can hear—God, using his servant Prophet Bushiri, will demonstrate to you that He is still, like in the Old Testament, God of miracles, wonders and signs.
  • If you still do believe that Prophet Bushiri only does miracles but doesn’t preach; come and experience the richness of his sermons and deep biblical revelations in his preaching.
  • If you still believe that men of God must be poor; come and see the fleet of top-of-the-range vehicles that God has blessed Prophet Bushiri with—the very symbol of affluence that comes after seeking the kingdom of God FIRST.
  • If you still believe that Prophet Bushiri charges people money to be prayed for or enter his crusades, come and enter free and get prayed for free by Major 1.
  • If you still believe that Prophet Bushiri only preaches about prosperity; come and see how much he preaches, mostly, about salvation and, in the process, lead you to Jesus Christ.
  • If you still do not believe that a wife to a prophet can be a prophetess, come and experience the wonderful teaching and demonstration of heavenly power by Prophetess Mary Bushiri.
  • If you haven’t experienced the sweetness of the gospel, the power of enjoying the word of God, come and feel it for yourself.

The move is in a bid to allow for smooth entry into the stadium for Saturday’s Carlsberg Cup final match between Malawi’s arch rivals Mighty Be Forward Wanderers and Nyasa Big Bullets.
