Two primary school boys in Nkhufi Senior Chief Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota died Sunday afternoon after a canoe they were peddling capsized, police have confirmed.
The two Mauludi brothers, Stanley aged 14 and Ishmael, 11 were sent by their mother to buy fresh fish along the shores of Lake Malawi but since it was across the lake they had to peddle through the lake to get to the other side.
But they however failed to make it to the other side as their canoe capsized for a reason that has not yet been established, but an eye witness who was fishing nearby told the police that he saw the two struggling to swim ashore when the canoe had overturned.
“The witness rushed to villagers nearby and after a rigorous search they retrieved their dead bodies an hour later,” said an officer.
The two Primary School pupils were at Kazizi F.P School in Standard 5 and 3 respectively.
