Today marked a pivotal moment in the extradition proceedings involving Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary, as the State concluded presenting its case before the court. The sole witness for the State, Sibongile Mzinyathi, Director of Public Prosecutions for Gauteng Province, underwent re-examination during the session.

Director of Criminal Litigation, Dzikondianthu Malunda, informed the court that following the re-examination, both the State and the defence have agreed on the timeline for further proceedings. According to the agreement, the defence is required to submit written arguments by August 19, 2024. Subsequently, the State will make its submissions by September 13, 2024. It was also decided that if necessary, the defence may respond to the State's submissions by September 19, 2024.

Chief resident magistrate Madalitso Chimwaza endorsed these dates, confirming that the court will issue its ruling 60 days after September 19, 2024.

The Bushiris are facing charges related to allegations of jumping bail in South Africa back in November 2020. They are wanted for questioning regarding financial crimes and rape accusations.

The extradition hearing has drawn significant attention, reflecting broader legal and diplomatic implications between South Africa and Malawi. As the proceedings move forward, the court’s decision will be eagerly awaited by parties on both sides of the case and observers interested in the outcome’s implications.
