LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Second deputy Speaker of National Assembly Aisha Adams on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 chased two Members of Parliament (MPs) for Blantyre City South and Zomba Chisi Sameer Suleiman and Mark Bottoman respectively out of the house misconduct including failing to adhere to Speaker’s order.
The duo were barred from the house after lawmaker Welani Chilenga gave a notice to the August House under standing order 74 of his intention to move a motion on Thursday on private members day under age bill that intend to block legislators and Presidents with 80 years to contest during elections.
The proposal eventually angered Suleiman and other members .
Eventually, Suleiman went straight to Chilenga soon after presenting the motion but chilenga ran away from the house.
Suleiman therefore ended up confronting Bottoman whose seat is close to Chilenga.
Passing the judgement , Second Speaker of Parliament, Aisha Adams said Suleiman is suspended for a full day sitting while bottom two days.
“Since the member has been misconducting in the house and this is his third time am giving him 1 full sitting as my punishment revised it from 5 days sitting while Bottomani did not sit while I was bringing order to the house am giving him 2 days,said Adams.
In an interview with, Suileman commended Adams for giving a full seating as a punishment which he expect to resume sitting on Friday.
He said, “It is very sad that government is using some members which were expelled from the party to bring confusion in the house.
“Bottoman provoked me by speaking ill of me the time I was trying to reason with Chilenga on the implications of the bill that’s why I had to react that way and am not regretting anything”
On his part, Democracy Progressive Party (DPP) Spokesperson, Shadrek Namalomba said he believe that Bottoman provoked Suleiman as Suileman was trying to reason with Chilenga on bringing the bill to the house.
He said parliament should move the expelled members from their side to avoid more chaos.
In his remarks, Leader of the house, Richard Chimwendo Banda said “It is very unfortunate that malawians witnessed the drama by honorable members and he ask the general public to forgive them all”.
Chimwendo added that DPP should resolve its internal party differences outside the house to avoid bringing in more confusions.
This is the third time for Suileman to be suspended in this session for various offences.
