Chakwera says SADC to focus on ending regional hunger

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera on Saturday, March 23, 2024 returned home from a two-day SADC summit that took place in Lusaka-Zambia with a message that time has come for Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries to concentrate on how to become food sufficient than engaging in wars.

Speaking upon his arrival at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, President Chakwera said as SADC they are taking headway in ending war in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and the insurgency in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado.

In his statement, President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia and Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation asked regional blocks world over to unite and deal with security crises together for continued world peace.

Hichilema said even though the blocks are in different regions, challenges on conflict affect the nations equally.

“We may be working in different regions, but our challenges on conflicts are the same; we must work together to defeat conflicts and unrest in the world.

“We must look at challenges faced by one nation and block as for us all and together we must unite to defeat conflicts in our respective regions,” he said.

SADC Executive Secretary, Ellias Magosi therefore appealed for more humanitarian support to conflicting regions particularly in eastern DRC disclosing that in his recent visit to the region, he witnessed women and children needing support.

“While we are forever grateful to countries contributing their missions to various conflicting site in our region, I am specifically appealing that we also scale up on humanitarian aid going to civilians in these conflict zones.

“In my recent visit to the conflict zone in eastern DRC, I saw many people, most of them women and children in dire need of more support; we need to balance all interventions by sending both military support and humanitarian support,” he said.

The meeting was concluded with Magosi delivering a communique on some of the issues the states deliberated on.

Apart from, Chakwera, other heads of state present at the meeting included Joao Lourenco of the Republic of Angola who is also SADC Chairperson, Felipe Nyusi of Mozambique, Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, Felix Tshisekedi of DRC.

Chakwera concludes SADC Summit successfully: To address Malawians Saturday night

LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera, on Saturday concluded his visit in Zambia where he went to participate in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Troika Summit at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in that country’s Capital City, Lusaka.

Departing from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, Chakwera was seen off by officials from both Zambia and Malawi, signifying the strong bilateral ties between the two neighbouring countries.

Chakwera left Malawi yesterday via Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) to participate in this crucial indaba.

Meanwhile, the President is expected to address the nation upon arrival from Zambia at 20:30 hours at Kamuzu Palace in the capital Lilongwe.

President Chakwera banks on SADC summit to address regional pressing issues

LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera says the Extraordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit will solve security tension within war torn regions of Mozambique and DRC Congo.

Chakwera left Malawi for Zambia on Friday via Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) and arrived the same day.

The President says the summit will also address regional issues Bordering on food availability at household level.

“The Extraordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit that I am attending in Lusaka tomorrow seeks to address pressing regional challenges around security and climate change vis-à-vis food availability for households, ” he said.

On security, the president said it is expected that the meeting is also going to explore better and inclusive solutions for the persistent war in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the insurgency in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province.

“The cross-border effects of these two inconveniences have a direct negative bearing on the movement of goods, people and services there hindering economic progress for the entire region.

“In addition, we will examine the preparedness of member states in combating food insecurity in the face of erratic weather patterns and the looming El Niño spell likely to affect the region’s food production,” he said.

Chakwera says SADC remains committed to achieving peace and food security in all the member states so as to transmit a real development agenda across the whole bloc.
