Malawi sets ambitious 41 million trees’ target for 2025/26 forestry season

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining has announced the start of the 2025/2026 National Forestry Season, outlining an ambitious national plan aimed at restoring degraded landscapes and strengthening community resilience against environmental shocks.

The season officially begins on December 15 2025 and will run until 15 April 2026, Mchinji Mission Primary School in Mchinji District will host the national launch.

This year’s theme, “Trees and Forests for Community Resilience,” underscores the vital role forests play in helping communities withstand climatic, economic and social challenges.

According to the Ministry, the theme highlights the need for every citizen to take part in planting, protecting and managing forests to ensure long-term environmental sustainability.

As part of its targets, government plans to plant 41 million tree seedlings on degraded land and forest areas across the country.

In addition, the Ministry aims to manage 4,000 hectares of natural regenerants nationwide as part of efforts to promote natural forest restoration.

Secretary for Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, Richard Perekamoyo, noted that the success of this year’s forestry season will depend on strong collaboration between government and various stakeholders.

He called on development partners, civil society organisations, the private sector and the general public to work together in promoting sustainable forest management.

The Ministry has further encouraged citizens to actively participate in tree planting and forest management activities in their communities, stressing that forests provide essential services that support livelihoods, protect water sources and enhance household resilience.
