Govt freezes funding to Zambia FA over Chipolopolo poor results

LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-The Government of Zambia has suspended all financial support to the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) following a series of disappointing performances by the men’s senior national football team, the Chipolopolo.

In a statement jointly issued by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts and the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ), government expressed deep concern over the poor results registered by the team in recent international competitions.

The statement noted that despite the country’s financial challenges, the government has continued to allocate significant resources to support the national team and its technical staff, including expenses for air travel, accommodation, bonuses and a portion of the head coach’s salary.

“It is essential to understand the rationale behind continued government funding in the face of these unsatisfactory performances,” reads part of the statement.

The Ministry said it has demanded a detailed explanation from FAZ on the measures being taken to address the team’s poor performance and restore competitiveness in Zambian football.

It also seeks assurances that the head coach is delivering on his contractual obligations and that there is a clear justification for why public funds should continue to support the team despite a lack of results on the pitch.

Government stressed that transparency and accountability in the use of public funds are critical, especially when dealing with a sport that holds such a central place in Zambia’s national identity.

The statement emphasized that football remains a cornerstone of Zambia’s cultural heritage, capable of uniting communities, promoting national pride and inspiring youth toward positive lifestyles.

“Football has the power to unite communities, promote national pride and inspire youth to adopt healthy lifestyles,” the Ministry said.

“However, we must ensure that public investment yields meaningful outcomes and drives real progress,”the Ministry added.

The statement further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting sports development but underlined that continued financial backing must be based on clear accountability and performance.

Ghana secures spot in 2026 World Cup qualifiers

Ghana has officially booked its place in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The Black Stars’ recent victory over Comoros has injected renewed hope among fans.

The decisive moment came in the second half when Ghanaian midfielder Muhamad Kudus scored a spectacular goal, giving the team a 1-0 win. Kudus’ performance was praised for his creativity and composure under pressure.

This win is particularly significant as Ghana has struggled in recent years, including failing to qualify for the last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The team’s resurgence in qualifiers signals a renewed determination to compete at the highest level.

Historically, Ghana has been one of Africa’s most consistent performers in World Cups.

Their 2010 campaign in South Africa remains memorable, as they became only the third African team to reach the quarterfinals.

The 2010 run was highlighted by standout performances from stars like Asamoah Gyan and Michael Essien, who helped Ghana earn a reputation as a powerhouse in international football.

For the 2026 World Cup, African teams face a unique opportunity as the tournament will expand to 48 teams, giving more nations a chance to compete on the global stage.

Ghana is keen to be among those representing the continent.

Other African teams are also actively pursuing qualification.

Morocco, with their disciplined defense and tactical strength, remains a top contender, while Senegal is building on their 2022 World Cup success.

Nigeria, another traditional African giant, is blending experienced players with young talents in an effort to secure a spot in North America.

The Super Eagles are determined to return to the World Cup after some recent disappointments in qualifiers.

Egypt, led by a new generation of players alongside veterans like Mohamed Salah, is also in the hunt. The Pharaohs aim to maintain their legacy as one of Africa’s most successful football nations.

Ghana’s coach has emphasized team cohesion and tactical discipline, recognizing that qualification is only the first step. Preparing for the challenges in the USA, Mexico, and Canada will require consistent performances.

Beyond Ghana, the African qualifiers are expected to be fiercely competitive with teams like Cameroon, Algeria, and Tunisia also pushing for World Cup spots.

The tournament promises to showcase some of the continent’s best talent.

Flames coach Pasuwa names squad without Babatunde in World Cup qualifiers matches

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi National Football Team head coach, Kalisto Pasuwa, has announced a 26-man squad set to face Equatorial Guinea and São Tomé and Príncipe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Flames will host Equatorial Guinea on 9 October at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe before travelling to Tunis for the away clash against São Tomé and Príncipe on 13 October.

Preparations will begin on Sunday, 5 October, when the squad regroups in Lilongwe.

Pasuwa has largely retained the core of his team, keeping 24 of the 26 players who featured in last month’s qualifiers against Namibia and Liberia.

The list features 15 foreign based players, a strong indication of his intent to blend local talent with international experience.

Among the notable inclusions is Ireland based defender Jubril Okedina of Bohemian FC, who returns to the squad for his first competitive appearance since playing in the Four Nations Tournament in March last year.

The squad, however, sees no place for FCB Nyasa Big Bullets striker Babatunde Adepoju, who was earlier tipped for a call-up but has not been included in the final selection.

Leading the attack will be seasoned forward Gabadinho Mhango of Richards Bay, Costa do Sol striker Richard Mbulu and exciting TP Mazembe duo Patrick Mwaungulu and Lanjesi Nkhoma.

Other key attackers include Mayele Malango (Monterey Bay FC), Chawanangwa Kaonga (Zanaco FC), Wisdom Mpinganjira (Mighty Wanderers) and Chikumbutso Salima (FCB Nyasa Big Bullets).

In midfield, Pasuwa has summoned Yankho Singo (FCB Nyasa Big Bullets), Blessings Singini (Mighty Wanderers), Lloyd Aaron (Muaither SC), Lloyd Njaliwa (Costa do Sol) and Robert Saizi (Zanaco).

The defense will be anchored by Charles Petro (Botosani FC), Nickson Nyasulu (FC Platinum), Dennis Chembezi (Al Qasim FC), Emmanuel Nyirenda (Mighty Wanderers), Gomezgani Chirwa (Ngezi Platinum), McDonald Lameck (Silver Strikers), Alick Lungu (Ekhaya FC) and Maxwell Paipi (Silver Strikers), alongside returning Okedina.

Between the posts, the Flames will rely on William Thole (Simba Bhora), George Chikooka (Silver Strikers) and Joshua Waka (Ekhaya FC).

With a blend of homegrown stars and international professionals, Malawi will be hoping to make a strong statement in their push for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

What lessons drawn from Malawi’s Flames two games in 2016 World Cup Qualifiers

By Raymond Siyaya Jnr

For the first time after many years, many malawian football enthusiasts have begun to nurture a rare fondness for the malawi national football team, the Flames.

This development is a no-brainer as in recent times, the Flames have notched up wins over Burkinafaso, South Africa, Comoros and Namibia, with most of these games played at the Bingu National Stadium under the tutelage of Callisto Pasuwa

The Flames pulled a surprise on Namibia, beating them away in Botswana 1-2 and fought from 2 nil down to draw against Liberia 2-2 at Bingu National Stadium.

Although these two games are pivotal as they are for permutations, they are also academic and sheer treasure trove of knowledge about the trends emerging in the team.

And here is what we have learnt:

The Right Flank ,The Achilles Heel?

Mcdonald Lameck and Robert Saizi were entrusted in the Namibia game to stop attacking wingers of Namibia and also provide the attacking width by running down the touch line and provide pinpointing crosses into the penalty area. But, during the Namibia game, none of the two was able to effectively perform these roles. In fact, the right flank was the point of entry for Namibia attacks. Almost all of their attacks originated from this flank. No wonder Saizi was consequently substituted at half time for Chawanangwa Kaonga. Saizi, at times, tried to operate as an inverted winger, but this too did not yield any dividends.

The right flank improved in the Liberia game as Mcdonald Lameck was able to bomb down the touch line with overlaps and underlaps and send in the much needed crosses in the box.

This right flank is one grey area Pasuwa and Co need to look at and improve because even in the Liberia game, the first goal malawi conceded had to do with Mcdonald Lameck leaving Patrick Mwaungulu to compete for an aerial ball against a taller Liberian player. Lameck as a defender could have fared better against the taller player but he switched off and the Flames conceded barely 4 minutes into the game.

Lloyd Njaliwa The Midfield Maestro and Juggernaut?

Every team has an unsung hero. This is a player who does the dirty and donkey work at the midfield by conducting play through linking up with attackers and dropping deep to help defenders. Njaliwa was gracious in both, and his physical presence was overwhelming for opponents in both games, especially the Namibia game. He was the springboard or launch pad for most of the Flames attacks. He oozed leadership as he was able to organise the defencive blocks when the Flames lost possession and was vocal in setting up defencive walls against free kicks by shouting orders to his fellow players. He is captain in waiting and was box to box, winning aerial duels and competing for every ball at the midfield.

Gabadihno ‘Ageing Like Wine’.

Frank Gabadihno Mhango’s two goals and one assist are a sharpened dagger at the heart of Patrick Mabedi, the previous coach who dropped him citing old age despite many fans protesting his undue exile from the team. But Pasuwa’s ‘arm over the shoulder’ approach and warmth have unlocked the Gabadihno everyone loves to watch and now, he is off the hinges.

His thunderous belter from the halfway line chipping the goalkeeper who was off the line is testament to the level of experience he has racked up over the years and evidence of a punisher he is, when let loose.

Then, Enter Mayele Malango.

From the get-go, not much was known about Mayele Malango when his name appeared in the Flames call-up. He had many sceptics he needed to prove wrong. And he did in style. For the Namibia game, he had a cameo, but his presence was still felt as his first touch was fantastic and showed dexterity. No wonder Pasuwa gave him 30 minutes in the Liberia game, and he showed again that he deserves more than that. He is definitely the future for malawi.

GAZING AT THE CRYSTAL BALL.

The future for Malawi football looks great. When Pasuwa first came in,foreign based players and locally based players could not play as a team. There was no chemistry and looked like strangers had been bundled together and forced to play, especially the Namibia game malawi played at Bingu National Stadium.

Now the team has a shape, players are able to combine and build from the back while breaking lines of opponents, and we are scoring goals and not only from set pieces.

The Flames under Pasuwa together with the entire technical panel including Peter Mponda, a coach known for his obsession for ‘standards’ on how professional football players are supposed to apply themselves will be an unextinguishable inferno that is set to blaze over africa.

Malawi’s Flames edge Namibia 2-1 in 2026 World Cup Qualifier

FRANCIS TOWN-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi national football team the Flames secured a hard fought 2-1 victory over Namibia in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match.

The encounter was played at a packed stadium as both teams battled for crucial points in Group H.

Malawi got off to a strong start with striker Richard Mbulu finding the back of the net just five minutes into the game after Namibia’s defense failed to clear their lines and his well taken goal sent the Flames into the lead

However the early lead came at a cost. In the 35th minute, goalkeeper William Thole was forced off the pitch due to an injury, prompting coach Kalisto Pasuwa to bring on a substitute shotstopper George Chikooka.

Despite the setback the Flames maintained their composure and went into halftime leading 1-0.

In the second half, Pasuwa made another tactical change introducing Chawanangwa Kaonga for Robert Saizi to inject more energy into the midfield.

The move paid off just eight minutes later when Gabadinho Mhango doubled Malawi’s lead in the 53rd minute with a clinical finish putting the Flames firmly in control of the match.

Namibia, however refused to go down without a fight. They pushed forward relentlessly and were rewarded in the 83rd minute with a consolation goal, setting up a tense finish.

Despite late pressure from the Namibia side Malawi held on to claim all three points after 90 minutes plus added time.

Speaking after the match, Pasuwa praised his players for their determination and work ethic.

“I am very proud of the boys. They gave everything on the pitch and showed great character.

“This win is important but we must stay focused because we have another crucial game coming up on Monday at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe,” he said.

The victory maintains the Flames to fifth place in Group H with nine points from seven matches, keeping their hopes alive of progressing further in the qualifiers.

Malawi will now shift their attention to their next fixture against Liberia where they will be hoping to build on this momentum and continue their journey towards a potential historic World Cup

Malawi Flames’ World Cup hopes fizzle out after Tunisia defeat

…..Tunisia 2-0 Malawi

By Shaffie A Mtambo

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifying campaign suffered a devastating blow after a 2-0 defeat to Tunisia.

The loss, combined with a previous 1-0 defeat to Namibia, leaves the Flames with six points from six matches and fifth in Group H.

The defeat has crushed Malawi’s hopes of advancing to the next round of the qualifiers.

Tunisia’s victory solidified their position at the top of the group with 16 points, while Namibia remains second with 12 points.

Liberia and Equatorial Guinea follow closely, with 10 and seven points, respectively.

The Flames’ performance against Tunisia was lackluster, with the team struggling to create scoring opportunities.

Jaziri scored the opening goal for Tunisia in the 85th minute, heading home a cross from the left wing.

The goal was a result of sustained pressure from the Tunisians, who had been pushing for a goal throughout the second half.

The Flames had a chance to equalize in the dying minutes of the match when they were awarded a penalty.

However, Richard Mbulu’s spot kick was saved by the Tunisian goalkeeper, sealing the win for the hosts.

Abdi sealed the victory for Tunisia with a penalty in stoppage time, condemning the Flames to their second consecutive defeat.

Malawi coach Kalisto Pasuwa was left reeling from the defeat, describing it as “painful”.

Pasuwa attributed the loss to the red card received by Lyod Aaron, which he believed changed the course of the game.

“The red card has also contributed to the loss. We consider it a part of football,” Pasuwa explained.

As the Flames look to regroup and refocus ahead of their next match, they’ll need to conjure up a miracle to turn their fortunes around.

…..E. Guinea 1-0 Malawi

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi national football team, the Flames have suffered a setback in their quest to qualify for the first-ever World Cup of Nations after a 1-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea today in Malabo.

The Patrick Mabedi-coached side was outclassed in all departments by the 79th-ranked Equatorial Guinea, leaving them chasing shadows.

In the first quarter of the game, Silver Striker’s goalkeeper George Chikooka made four critical saves from Nzalang Nacionale’s Edu Salvador.

The match was deadlocked at halftime, but Equatorial Guinea kept pressing Malawi in the second half, forcing them to defend in their own half.

The host team exchanged good passes with beautiful touches.

Coach Patrick Mabedi made several changes in search of goals but the team failed to test the Guinea goalkeeper.

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers’ Wisdom Mpinganjira and Kabwe Warriors star Chifundo Mphasi replaced Patrick Mwaungulu and Henri Kumwenda.

The home team created other chances through Mba Obiang and Pablo Ganet but Chikooka dealt with their efforts.

Nzalang Nacionale snatched a late winner through Edu Salvador who connected well with a set piece from Bassey punishing the Flames for their inability to sustain possession.

Malawi failed to combine and build any attack, sitting deep in their half until the final whistle.

“It’s painful to concede in the final minutes of the game,” Mabedi explained.

“We worked hard, but our plan to use counterattacks failed. We’re still learning as a team and must redeem ourselves.”

The loss leaves the Flames in fourth position with six points while Equatorial Guinea’s victory propelled them to fifth, leapfrogging Sao Tome and Principle who are yet to win a game in Group H. Equatorial Guinea’s first six points were forfeited due to fielding an ineligible player in the campaign.

2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Harambee Stars held by Burundi Swallows

…..Kenya 1-1 Burundi

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Kenyan national football team played a 1-1 draw against Burundi at home Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Friday, June 7, 2024 in their third game of group F of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

The Swallows started on a high note in the first half pressing hard in Harambee’s half but failed to create serious scoring chances.

Harambee Stars picked up and settled well especially in the middle of the park where Ouma Timothy Noor, Agay Anthony Akumu and Odada Richard were operating.

However, despite the dominance, the Harambee Stars failed to get a goal in spite of creating chances through captain, Ogada Michael Olunga, Muguna Kenneth Mugambi and Odada Richard.

The Burundiands motivated with their brothers and sisters from Dzaleka Refugees camp who came in large numbers to cheer them, denied the stars from shinning at Bingu Stadium, defensively solid Kenya had no room to penetrate through till the last whistle of the first half.

In the second half both coaches made changes as Kenya brought on Abuya Duke Ooga, Ochieng John with Coach for Burundi, Etienne Ndayiragije brought on Sudi Abdallah Abdallah among others.

The Harambee stars broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute through substitute Abuya Duke Ooga.

As the match was thought to end in favor of the home team, Burundi substitute Sudi Abdallah Abdallah leveled the matters in the 85th minute after capitalizing on the Schoolboy mistake made by a Kenyan defender within the penalty box.

As the game excited the fans with its intensity, especially in the closing period, the referee blew the whistle to end the fierce battle of the East African teams played in Southern Africa at the magnificent Bingu National Stadium.

In reaction to the result in a post-match interview, Burundi head coach Etienne Ndayiragije hailed his charges for not giving up easily after they conceded.

“I think the football fraternity has been entertained here, beautiful football from the two sides. Kenya played well in the first half and we finished well in the second half.

“We knew our counterparts were good in the middle of the park hence I introduced sharp wingers who supplied good balls in the box”, said Ndayiragije

The Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat said, “This is not the result we wanted, we didn’t start well but after some minutes we picked up and started playing our game but there were also too many stoppages by the referee who to me also spoiled the game. We conceded a silly goal, in top-level football your players don’t play with the ball in the box but rather kick it away even outside the stadium.

“They need to cool down because we have another difficult match against the African Champions on Tuesday. I am upbeat we can make a surprise with Malawians behind us as it is now our second home”.

With the draw, the Harambee Stars now sit in position 3 with 4 points from 3 games while Burundi are in position four in Group F with four points as well.

Ivory Coast are leading the table after accumulating nine (9) points from 3 games following their 1-0 victory over Gabon in Abidjan, the Gabonese have 6 points from 3 games and remain second in the group.

Kenya will host Ivory Coast in the fourth game of the campaign at Bingu National Stadium on Tuesday, June 12, 2024, while Burundi will travel to Seychelles who are anchoring the group with zero points from two games.

2026 World Cup: Malawi’s Flames beat Sao Tome: Hope for qualification

….. Malawi 3-1 Sao Tome

…….Mabedi says it’s too early to talk about qualifying for the 2026 World Cup

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi National Football Team head coach Patrick “General” Mabedi says it’s too early for now to be talking about qualification to the 2026 World Cup to be hosted by the United States of America, CANADA, and Mexico.

The former Kaiser Chiefs star said this on Thursday 6th June 2024 when his side defeated Sao Tome and Principle 3-1 at the Bingu National Stadium in the capital Lilongwe in the 2026 World Cup Qualifying campaign in group H encounter.

“We need to understand our objective and what we want for now. As I said to you we need to take one game at a time, we don’t need to think and put ourselves under pressure to say we need to qualify. What is more important is to take each game we play seriously and at the end of the campaign calculate what we accumulate”, Mabedi explained.

On his assessment of Thursday’s clash against the low-ranked Sao Tome and Principle at the Bingu National Stadium, Mabedi said his charges failed to capitalize on numerous chances they created in the game hence scoring fewer goals.

The gaffer said, the Flames started the match on a slow note and picked up as it progressed.

“I was happy that we scored two early goals that demoralized the opponent. We were slow a little bit in terms of play but if we were more aggressive we could have scored more than three goals.

“We struggled in combination as we gave away some easy balls but this is because the team has not played together for some time. Lastly, let me thank supporters who came in large numbers to support us”, added Mabedi.

The Sensational Zanaco FC Striker, Chawanangwa Kaonga registered his name on a score sheet with a beautiful goal seven minutes into the game after cleverly beating Sao Tome and Principle defenders before unleashing the shot into the net.

In the 14th minute, Big Bullets’ on-fire Lanjesi Nkhoma extended Malawi’s lead sending the ball to the far bottom corner of Sao Tome and Principle goal stopper.

At halftime, the home team led 2-0 nil. Second half Malawi scored through Kabwe Warriors attacker Chifundo Mphansi who received a cake pass from Patrick Mwaungulu who is heading to DRC to join TP Mazembe after the international break alongside his team mate Lanjesi Nkhoma.

The visitors, however, scored a consolation goal through Da Silva as the game approached closure.

Malawi now sits in position 3 in group H of the campaign with 6 points from 3 games, they won 1-0 away in Liberia before being humbled 1-0 at home by the current table leaders Tunisia, at home Bingu National Stadium.

The Patrick Mabedi coached side leave the country on Friday for Equatorial Guinea for another assignment on 10th June.

Tunisia lead the group with 9 points seconded by Namibia with 7.

The winner of the group will directly qualify for the World Cup, while the four best group runners-up will participate in the playoffs to determine which team will advance to the inter-confederation play-offs.
