Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance fails to disclose UNGA trip costs

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse government Alliance cabinet ministers on Monday, October 10, 2022 failed to disclose amount of money used during the recent United General Assembly (UNGA) trip.

At the Government Faces the Press episode, four cabinet Ministers kept a tight lid on expenses that were incurred.

The ministers which including Minister of Information, Gospel Kazako, Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nancy Tembo and Minister of Education Agnes Nyalonje

Kazako said the expenses await proper tabulation of figures from the ministry of finance.

Instead Information Minister said people should learn to appreciate positive results that UNGA has brought to the nation than figuring out the costs.

He said UNGA is a very important trip which need the first gentle man to attend himself as he attracts potential investors.

Chakwera with many delegates spent three weeks in New York blowing out forex while the country is grappling with cost of living, inflation, fuel crisis.

Chakwera touts tours’ benefits

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera on Tuesday October 4, 2022 arrived in the country from a working tour that took him to Kenya, United States of America and United Arab Emirates.

Speaking at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe Chakwera said he is optimistic that Malawi will benefit greatly from all the investments he wooed for many sectors.

While he was abroad Chakwera attended various meetings including transport, education, health, energy, agriculture and sports which in turn will help the country in actualize its dream of becoming self-reliant and inclusively wealthy nation within the next four decades.

Chakwera urged Malawians to collectively put all hands on deck and contribute in building Malawi.

He concluded that he will provide comprehensive details of his tour in due course.

While in USA, Chakwera among other things attended United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), hold bilateral talks with the US government and engaged in several high-level meetings with heads of international development institutions and investors from across the globe.

After attending UNGA, the Malawi leader travelled to Washington DC for the signing of the $350 million compact for Malawi under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and hold bilateral talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Thereafter, he had audience with Managing Director of the World Bank Group, Axel van Trotsenburg, on the US$1.5 billion investment package for Malawi expected to roll out soon.

Chakwera also met with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Ms. Kristalina Georgieva.

On his way back home, he made a stop- over in Abu Dhabi for bilateral talks with the president of United Arab Emirates.

Maiden physical UNGA thrills as Chakwera arrives in New York

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has safely landed in New York, United States of America for the 77th edition of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed.

The 2022 Session of the UNGA commenced on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York City, just hours before Chakwera touched down.

However, high level the deliberative sessions among the 192 world leaders in attendance, including the Malawi leader, start September 20, 2022.

Chakwera left Kenya on Tuesday immediately after attending the swearing-in ceremony of the country’s newly-elected President Willian Ruto.

This will be his first UNGA session to attend in person since his ascendancy to the country’s presidency as the Assembly has this year resumed after a Covid-19 pandemic-induced break.

The President gave his maided address to the UNGA which he attended online last year as a consequence.

“I would say this trip and the UNGA in general is timely for my government and the people of Malawi in light of the prevailing social and economic challenges, many of which have their answers in our engagement with the global community,” Chakwera told the press as he left for the Assembly.

The trip is also considered as a working sojourn where heads of state and government engage other world leaders and various heads of international institutions from across all sectors of development.

According to Minister of Foregn Affairs Nancy Tembo, at least 40 high level meetings geared towards mobilising over a billion dollars in resources have been lined up in the President’s schedule of activities in New York; a development Chakwea hinted in an interview earlier.

Chakwera said: “Our underlying goal is to bring from New York tangible outcomes in terms of multilateral and bilateral support from development partners in our quest to improve livelihoods of Malawians.

Under the theme “A Watershed Moment: Transformative Solutions to Interlocking Challenges”, Malawi is said to be eyeing to utilise the Assembly in seeking workable solutions to some of the world’s most vexing issues from poverty, development and climate change to peace and security.

President Chakwera is expected to address the General Assembly next week Thursday , 22 September 2022.

Aside from the assembly which is the main deliberative organ, the President is scheduled to also hold bilateral and multilateral engagements with other world leaders and heads of international institutions.

Such discussions are aimed at promoting Malawi as a competitive investment destination in Africa and use the opportunity to consolidate various bilateral ties the country has.

The President has since pledged to keep the nation abreast on any engagements he undertakes while there as regards building Malawi’s socio-economic sector.

Chilima is in-charge as Chakwera leaves midnight for UNGA via Nairobi

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera left the country on Monday midnight, September 12, 2022 for New York United States of America where he will physically attend the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for the first time.

The President and the First Lady, Madam Monica Chakwera, left the country through the Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in the capital Lilongwe at around 11pm.

Chilima in the middle sees off Chakwera to UNGA

Chakwera was seen off by Vice President Saulos Chilima, cabinet ministers and other government officials.

Chakwera used Nairobi route to attend the Swearing-in and Inauguration of President -Elect, William Ruto.

Thereafter Chakwera will proceed to New York, United States of America to attend this year’s United Nations Annual General Assembly.

The Malawi leader is scheduled to address the UNGA on 22 September 2022.

Apart from addressing the UNGA, the President will hold 40 side meetings in the next 15 days with world leaders and heads of various international institutions all geared towards mobilising over US$1 billion for various key sectors in Malawi.

Minister of information and digitisation, Gospel Kazako, said the assembly is a good platform for dealing with challenges the country is facing.

Chakwera was scheduled to leave the country in the afternoon yesterday but the Plane developed a mechanical fault hence delaying the trip.

About 37 delegates have made the list accompanying Chakwera for the UNGA.

While Chakwera is abroad, his vice Chilima takes charge of the state.
