Malawi Finance Minister Chithyola appeals for leveraging Africa’s demographic dividend

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Simplex Chithyola Banda emphasised the need Africa to determine and to transform the continent into a global player, fostering equitable and a people centric, sustainable economic development by leveraging Africa’s demographic dividend.

Chithyola Banda made the remarks on Monday, May 20, 2023 the capital Lilongwe during the 9th African Population Conference at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC).

He said the conference provides a platform for experts and law makers to share knowledge, experiences and best practices in population management in pursuit of achieving Africa’s sustainable development ambitious.

He also said, despite so many challenges, people in Africa are now uniting and collaborating more in strengthening partnerships in so many areas which will accelerate Africa’s economic growth like health and education, focusing on population development, especially the youth.

Chithyola Banda has described the conference as a powerful testimony on Africa’s resort, pointing that it will result into development of the implementation plan to achieve the AU conference target which was set 30 years ago as well as spearhead the first 10 years of implementation of the AU agenda 2063.

“The Conference will accord Malawi an opportunity to tell her story generously and share her experiences on population,” Chithyola said.

Prime Minister of Iceland, Bjarni Benediktsson said the conference’s theme, “Road to 2030: Leveraging Africa’s Human Capital to Achieve Transformation in a World of Uncertainty” highlights Iceland’s relationship with Malawi as evidenced by developments being carried out in Malawi by the Government of Iceland.

In her remarks, Regional Director for the United Nations Population Fund in Eastern and Southern Africa, Lydia Zigomo commended Malawi Government for hosting the conference.

Chakwera, Iceland PM Benediktsson open 9th African Population conference

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera on Monday, May 20, 2024 presiding over the opening of the 9th African Population Conference at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in the capital Lilongwe.

Chakwera opened the conference alongside Prime Minister of Iceland, Bjarni Benediktsson, who arrived in the country on Sunday on a five – day official visit.

The Malawi leader was welcomed on arrival at BICC by the country’s Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and several other high ranking government officials.

Over 600 international delegates are taking part in the conference.

The African Population Conference is the largest scientific meeting on population issues, organised every four years by the Union for African Population Studies (UAPS).

The main aim of the conference is to examine the state of knowledge gaps regarding various populations and development issues impacting the African continent.

The conference also offers an opportunity for a diverse set of stakeholders, researchers, policymakers, representatives of civil society, regional and international organisations as well as non – governmental organisations, to explore ways and means of applying research evidence, generated to improve the well – being of the African people.

Key objectives of the conference include supporting the training of the next generation of researchers, linking scholars for knowledge sharing through various forms of networking and promoting dialogue between population and development experts and policy makers.

The conference is being held under the theme, “Road to 2030: Leveraging Africa’s human capital to achieve transformation in a world of uncertainty.”

Finance Minister Chithyola to address population dynamics in economic trajectory

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Simplex Chithyola Banda, says that as the host of the 9th African Population Conference, Malawi stands to massively benefit from this event.

Chithyola observes that the conference will provide a platform to showcase the country’s commitment to addressing challenges arising from population dynamics.

Speaking during a press briefing at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre, Chithyola Banda stated that the conference will provide a platform for scientific discourse, research, and policy discussions on population dynamics, bringing together over 600 delegates from Africa and beyond.

Highlighting the challenges faced by the continent due to population growth related dynamics affecting the economic trajectory of the country and the continent, Chithyola Banda said the conference has come at the right time to address such challenges, as the insights and recommendations generated will be integrated into the nation’s economic planning.

In his remarks, Chief Government Spokesperson, Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu urged Malawians to utilise the economic opportunities presented by the conference, particularly in tourism and boosting local businesses.

He also encouraged Malawians to extend their hospitality to the visitors and urged the press to showcase Malawi’s success stories to enhance the country’s standing.

“We believe that the media will take an active role in portraying Malawi’s good image,” he said.

The conference which runs from 20th to 24th May, 2024 in Lilongwe, will be presided over by President Lazarus Chakwera.

It will provide a platform for experts, policymakers, and other stakeholders across Africa to engage and develop strategies to “leverage Africa’s human capital to achieve transformation a world of uncertainty.”
