LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera on Monday, May 20, 2024 presiding over the opening of the 9th African Population Conference at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in the capital Lilongwe.
Chakwera opened the conference alongside Prime Minister of Iceland, Bjarni Benediktsson, who arrived in the country on Sunday on a five – day official visit.
The Malawi leader was welcomed on arrival at BICC by the country’s Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and several other high ranking government officials.
Over 600 international delegates are taking part in the conference.
The African Population Conference is the largest scientific meeting on population issues, organised every four years by the Union for African Population Studies (UAPS).
The main aim of the conference is to examine the state of knowledge gaps regarding various populations and development issues impacting the African continent.
The conference also offers an opportunity for a diverse set of stakeholders, researchers, policymakers, representatives of civil society, regional and international organisations as well as non – governmental organisations, to explore ways and means of applying research evidence, generated to improve the well – being of the African people.
Key objectives of the conference include supporting the training of the next generation of researchers, linking scholars for knowledge sharing through various forms of networking and promoting dialogue between population and development experts and policy makers.
The conference is being held under the theme, “Road to 2030: Leveraging Africa’s human capital to achieve transformation in a world of uncertainty.”
