The Ultimate 48 Hours in Cape Town

Planning a trip to Cape Town but pressed for time? Explore the city in 48 hours and enjoy its renowned beaches, culinary and wine experiences, and outdoor activities.

Here’s your guide to experiencing the city like a local:

DAY 1

Lion's Head is a popular hike in Cape Town- known for its stunning views of the city.

5 am: Hike Up Lion’s Head

Set your alarm early and head out for a morning climb up Lion’s Head; it’s one of those adventures that’s absolutely worth the effort. The trail winds upwards with spectacular views at nearly every turn, so you’ll want to take your time and savour it all. Aim to reach the top by sunrise and bring breakfast, snacks, and water. At the summit, you’ll see the Atlantic, the City Bowl, and Table Mountain spread out below.

9 am: Breakfast at Truth Coffee

Need a caffeine fix after your hike? Truth Coffee is recognised as one of the most beautiful coffee shops in the world. Imagine a steampunk-inspired interior with high ceilings, intricate copper detailing, and vintage machinery. As you sip your artisanal, in-house-roasted coffee, take in the artistic atmosphere. Truth boasts an extensive menu, offering everything from sweet treats and breakfast dishes to salads and sophisticated cocktails. We recommend picking up a few of their signature coffee blends to take home.

Location: 36 Buitenkant St, Cape Town City Centre

12pm: Bo-Kaap

Explore Bo-Kaap's rich history and heritage.

After breakfast, explore the vibrant streets of Bo-Kaap. Located at the foot of Signal Hill on the edge of the city centre, this historic neighbourhood, once known as the Malay Quarter, dates to the 1760s, when rows of “huurhuisjes” (rental houses) were built and leased to enslaved people. Many of these residents, later recognised as Cape Malays, were brought from Malaysia, Indonesia, and other parts of Africa, and their cultural influence continues to shape the neighbourhood today.

Now one of Cape Town’s most culturally vibrant districts, Bo-Kaap is celebrated for its colourful houses, heritage, and cuisine. Visit Bo-Kaap Deli to sample a traditional koesister, explore the Bo-Kaap Museum to discover the stories of the pioneers who shaped the area, or join a cooking class with residents to learn how to prepare authentic Cape Malay dishes.

1.30 pm: Lunch at Bree Street

One of the trendiest streets in the city, Bree Street, is lined with an eclectic mix of restaurants — ranging from artisanal pizzas and gourmet burgers to international cuisines and modern fine dining. Beyond the eateries, you’ll also discover a variety of boutique shops and local designers, perfect for browsing fashion and exploring the city’s creative side.

5 pm: Atlantic Seaboard

Cape Town’s beaches and sunsets never fail to impress. Visit Camps Bay, where palm trees line the promenade and the Twelve Apostles mountain range creates a stunning backdrop. Clifton’s beaches, just a short drive away, boast soft white sands and turquoise waters. They are truly some of the best city beaches you’ll find.

Along this stretch, you’ll also come across a few tidal pools perfect for a quick dip. As the afternoon draws to a close, visit one of the stylish cocktail bars or restaurants along the Camps Bay strip, such as Café Caprice, Chinchilla by Kove Collection, and The Lawns at the Roundhouse. Trust us, the sunset here is definitely worth staying for!

DAY 2

One of the world's most scenic drives - Chapman's Peak.

8 am: Chapman’s Peak

Start your day early with a drive along Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the world’s most celebrated scenic routes, offering stunning coastal views at every bend. Throughout the journey, there are plenty of spots to stop for photographs or to enjoy a pre-packed picnic breakfast while admiring the dramatic cliffs and sparkling Atlantic below.

10 am: Boulders Beach

You cannot miss a trip to Boulders Beach, the only place in the world where you can get close to African penguins in their natural habitat. Recently named the World’s Best One-of-a-Kind Beach and ranked among the Top 10 Best Beaches in the World at the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards 2026, it’s easy to see why. Take a dip, take a few photos, and watch the penguins waddle and swim… always from a respectful distance to protect these charming little residents.

11.30 am: Cape Point

Continue south into the wild beauty of Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. At Cape Point, one of Cape Town’s Big 6 attractions, you can hike along scenic trails, ride the Flying Dutchman Funicular to the lookout point, climb up to the historic lighthouse, and follow the shipwreck trail to see some of the 26 recorded shipwrecks scattered around the coastline. For lunch, stop at Two Oceans Restaurant to enjoy seafood and the stunning views.

Location: Cape Peninsula

Website: capepoint.co.za/

3 pm: Wine Tasting at Groot Constantia

No trip to Cape Town is complete without visiting South Africa’s oldest wine-producing farm, Groot Constantia. There are various tasting options tailored to your preferences, including wine and chocolate pairings.

Location: Groot Constantia Rd, Constantia

Website: grootconstantia.co.za/

6 pm: SPYCED Restaurant

Wrap up your trip with a feast at SPYCED Restaurant, where Cape Malay flavours meet live Cape Town jazz. Expect an evening of local cuisine, drumming, and music, and end the night with some dancing.

In Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Reassessing Tax Incentives Can Assist Growth and Equity

WASHINGTON, USA, 31 July 2025-/African Media Agency (AMA)/- In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), rationalizing tax incentives could improve effectiveness of tax policies, and pave the way for future tax rate reductions, while ensuring adequate resources for development and social spending, according to the World Bank DRC Economic Update, released today.

The report titled Reassessing Tax Incentives – Falling Short of Promised Growth and Equity notes the high GDP growth rate of 6.5% achieved in 2024, supported by dynamic mining activities, especially in copper and cobalt. Despite being among Africa’s highest, this growth rate is slightly below the 7.9% average from 2021-2023.

Even with this high growth, however, the report highlights that significant poverty reduction and job creation have not yet occurred. Macroeconomic stability has been maintained through fiscal discipline and avoiding monetary financing of deficits. Inflation, though still high, fell to 8.6% in June 2025. The DRC’s development potential remains substantial, with a positive economic outlook.

The report’s special topic section examines tax incentives, focusing on their evolution and impact. DRC’s tax revenues account for 12.5% of GDP, compared to the SSA average of 16%. According to the report, tax incentives lead to a revenue shortfall of about 5% of GDP—equivalent to one-third of total tax revenues or three times the health sector budget—and provide minimal benefits to vulnerable households.

“The DRC has strong economic potential. To achieve inclusive and sustainable growth, the country should boost domestic revenue, streamline tax incentives, and focus on social services and infrastructure investment,” said Albert Zeufack, World Bank Country Director for Angola, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Sao Tome and Principe.

To address challenges and boost resources for growth, the report recommends simplifying fiscal policy, harmonizing tax rates, replacing profit-based cost-based tax incentives, and improving transparency and evaluation of tax incentives.

Mauritania’s former president Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz sentenced to 15 Years for corruption

A Mauritanian appeals court on Wednesday sentenced former President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz to 15 years in prison and imposed a $3 million fine, escalating a previous five-year sentence handed down in 2023 for corruption charges.

Aziz, a former military general who rose to power through two coups before serving as president from 2009 to 2019, was found guilty of money laundering and illicit self-enrichment. Investigators say he amassed over $70 million in assets during his decade in office. He has remained in custody since his initial conviction last year.

The trial has drawn international attention as a rare example of an African head of state being held accountable for corruption while in office. Aziz’s legal team has dismissed the charges as politically motivated, alleging they stem from a falling-out with his successor, President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani.

Once close allies, Aziz and Ghazouani experienced a sharp rift after Mauritania’s first peaceful democratic transition of power in 2019. Tensions escalated when Aziz attempted to reclaim influence within the ruling party. In 2020, a parliamentary commission launched a sweeping investigation into alleged corruption during his administration, eventually implicating 11 others.

Wednesday’s ruling cleared six high-ranking officials from Aziz’s former government but upheld a two-year prison sentence for his son-in-law on charges of influence peddling. The court also ordered the dissolution of the “Errahma” (Mercy) Foundation, run by Aziz’s son, and authorized the seizure of its assets.

Mauritania, despite its vast natural wealth, including iron ore, gold, copper, oil, and natural gas, continues to face high levels of poverty. According to the United Nations, nearly 60% of the population lives below the poverty line, often working in informal jobs or agriculture. Economic hardship has driven many young Mauritanians to seek opportunities abroad, with increasing numbers attempting to migrate to Europe and the United States via irregular routes.

Aziz’s sentencing could mark a pivotal moment in Mauritania’s political and judicial history, signaling a potentially stronger stance against corruption among high-level officials. However, the case remains politically sensitive in a country where institutions are still consolidating democratic norms.

Africa accelerates towards energy and economic sovereignty with DRC mining growth {Business Africa}

DRC’s Mining Sector Enters a New Phase of Growth

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), already home to some of the world’s largest reserves of cobalt and copper, is entering a dynamic new phase. Recent geological surveys have unveiled new mineral-rich zones, drawing renewed investor interest and strategic international partnerships.

Djimpe Landry, a partner at Innogence Consulting in Kinshasa, notes that “these new Geological Research Zones are key to unlocking long-term investor confidence and will drive a more transparent, regulated approach to resource management.”

The government’s latest reforms include clearer mining codes, improved contract oversight, and initiatives to attract climate-resilient energy investments to power mining operations. Yet, persistent security threats in the east of the country continue to raise concerns. Analysts emphasize the importance of fair and sustainable foreign partnerships to ensure Congolese communities benefit from the boom.

“Managing partnerships equitably will be essential. The DRC must insist on technology transfers, local job creation, and environmental standards,” Landry added.

Women Driving the Future: Spiro Launches All-Female EV Assembly Line in Kenya

In Nairobi, a historic milestone was marked with the launch of Africa’s first all-women electric vehicle (EV) assembly line by Spiro, the continent’s largest EV manufacturer. This groundbreaking initiative merges clean energy innovation with gender empowerment, challenging norms in a male-dominated industry.

The facility not only champions eco-friendly transport solutions but also offers new employment and upskilling opportunities for women in STEM and technical trades. Spiro’s initiative is seen as a blueprint for inclusive industrialization in Africa’s growing green economy.

“This is not just about EVs , it’s about rewriting the narrative of what women can do in heavy industry and in the climate transition,” said a spokesperson for the company.

Afreximbank’s $3B Energy Facility to Curb Fuel Import Dependence

Meanwhile, Afreximbank has announced a $3 billion credit facility aimed at reducing Africa’s dependence on imported fuels, a major drain on national budgets and trade balances. The initiative supports regional refining hubs and infrastructure projects, including Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery and Angola’s Lobito and Cabinda refineries.

The facility is expected to catalyze intra-African energy trade, boost self-sufficiency, and help stabilize fuel prices across the continent. From mineral-rich provinces to solar-powered cities, Africa is asserting its potential, one reform, innovation, and empowered workforce at a time.

Congo-Rwanda Peace Talks: Draft Proposal Submitted

Congo and Rwanda have submitted a draft peace proposal as part of a U.S.-led initiative aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo. U.S. President Donald Trump’s senior adviser for Africa and the Middle East, Massad Boulos, announced the receipt of the drafts from both nations, calling it “an important step” towards peace.

The conflict escalated earlier this year when Rwanda-backed M23 rebels seized key cities, including Goma and Bukavu. The fighting has resulted in approximately 7,000 deaths and displaced over 7 million people, exacerbating one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. Eastern Congo is rich in critical minerals like cobalt, gold, and copper.

The peace proposal is seen as a pathway to unlock substantial Western investment in the region’s mining sector. Rwanda’s Foreign Minister stated that negotiations for a final peace agreement will continue later this month, with hopes that the presidents of Rwanda and Congo will sign the accord by mid-June at the White House, in the presence of President Trump and regional leaders.

The draft peace proposal follows an April meeting in Washington, where Congo and Rwanda pledged to work towards a peace deal under the oversight of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Power Play or Partnership? America’s Strategy in Africa [Business Africa]

This Week: U.S. Influence in Africa, EU-Zimbabwe Trade, and Uganda’s Tea Crisis

This week, our guest, historian Amzat Boukari-Yabara, revisits the intensifying American influence in Africa, spanning energy and mining projects. Meanwhile, the European Union seeks to strengthen its trade ties with Zimbabwe, and in Uganda, the tea industry is reeling from a pricing crisis.

Africa and the U.S.’s Multidimensional Strategy

As major powers vie for access to Africa’s strategic resources, the United States is deploying a complex strategy that blends economic investments, security cooperation, and diplomatic mediation. This approach aims not only to secure energy and mineral supplies but also to counter the growing influence of China and Russia on the continent.

Nigeria-Morocco Pipeline: An Energy and Geopolitical Keystone

The Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project (5,660 km, $25 billion) perfectly illustrates this strategy. Actively supported by Washington, this mega-project serves several strategic goals: reducing Europe’s dependence on Russian gas, countering Chinese advances—with the Jingye Group already supplying construction materials—and bolstering American influence. “There has been a reshaping of energy stakes since the war in Ukraine,” explains historian Amzat Boukari-Yabara, noting how the U.S. is exploiting Europe’s new vulnerabilities.

DR Congo: Mining Wealth and Instrumentalized Instability

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, U.S. strategy reveals its contradictions. On one hand, companies like KoBold Metals (backed by Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos) are making major investments in cobalt and copper extraction. On the other, Washington offers conditional military support in the east of the country while positioning itself as a mediator in the conflict with Rwanda. “We are witnessing the monetization of instability,” Boukari-Yabara warns, highlighting “a U.S. ability to exert diplomatic, commercial, and security blackmail.” This approach peaks with opaque negotiations involving Rwanda over Congolese resources, which “tend to perpetuate the crisis in eastern Congo.”

Kenya and Rare Earths: A Strategic Partnership

In Kenya, the U.S. is strengthening partnerships around rare earths, which are essential for the energy transition. This push is part of a global race for critical minerals, where Washington seeks to close the gap with Beijing. It also comes alongside a military repositioning in the region, particularly in the Sahel after France’s withdrawal.

Questionable Tactics

Recent American initiatives raise concerns about respect for African sovereignty. The most striking example is Trump’s proposal to recognize Somaliland in exchange for accepting Palestinian refugees. For Boukari-Yabara, these “deal-making negotiations” reflect a purely transactional view of relations with Africa.

In the face of this aggressive policy, the historian calls for an urgent, unified continental response: “We need to create transnational industries and resolve the CFA franc issue.” His call for unity resonates, as “all these resources directly concern the U.S. in its global vision.” The key question remains whether African countries can turn this new geopolitical rivalry into a genuine opportunity for sovereign development.

Zimbabwe: Toward Strengthened Trade Ties with the EU?

As the United States reduces its aid to many African countries, the European Union is revising its strategy on the continent—particularly in Zimbabwe. Brussels is moving from the role of donor to co-investor, offering duty- and tax-free access to its market. France is supporting local agricultural SMEs, and the Netherlands already imports Zimbabwean fruits and steel.

This renewed European trade push comes amid a tense political climate. The recent NGO law (PVO Bill), deemed repressive by civil organizations, has sparked concern. Nevertheless, the EU hopes Zimbabwean businesses will seize the opportunity.

Uganda: Tea Industry in Peril Amid Price Collapse

Uganda’s tea industry is undergoing an unprecedented crisis. Tea prices have dropped significantly, averaging just $0.79 per kilo—far below the more than $2 fetched by Kenyan and Rwandan teas. This sharp price drop has led many farmers to abandon tea in favor of more profitable crops such as maize and bananas.

Victoria Ashabahebwa, director of Swazi Tea Co. LTD, notes that more than a million Ugandans depend on tea for their livelihood. Declining tea quality, high production costs, and a lack of government support are all contributing factors. Farmers and processors have called on the government to invest in the sector and rescue an industry that was once thriving—but so far, no official response has been given.
