XTransfer’s CSO Speaks at Inclusive FinTech Forum 2026 in Rwanda

KIGALI, Rwanda, 18 March 2026 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/ – XTransfer, the world’s leading B2B cross-border financial platform, was honoured to have its Chief Strategy Officer, Neil Ni, speak at the Inclusive FinTech Forum 2026 in Rwanda, underscoring the company’s growing expansion across Africa to deliver more inclusive financial services for SMEs engaged in international trade across the continent.

XTransfer’s CSO, Neil Ni (Left), speaks at the Inclusive FinTech Forum 2026 in Rwanda.

Neil joined the panel discussion, “Securing the Global Payments Highway: Cybersecurity for Real-Time Cross-Border Transactions” during the forum to share perspectives on how the industry can strengthen cybersecurity, anti-money laundering (AML) controls, and operational resilience as cross-border payments scale in speed and volume.

Drawing on XTransfer’s experience supporting SMEs in international trade, Neil noted that traditional B2B cross-border payments often pass through multiple correspondent banks, creating complex procedures, settlement delays and high costs that can strain SME cash flow. He shared that transfers can take several days to settle, and fees can materially impact businesses operating on tight margins, sometimes pushing SMEs toward unlicensed channels that raise compliance and transparency risks.

“As the industry scales, the challenge isn’t only transaction volume, it’s speed and trust,” Neil said. “To keep legitimate trade moving safely, risk and compliance must become more intelligent, consistent, and scalable.”

Neil shared that AI is now foundational to XTransfer’s risk and compliance capability. He highlighted TradePilot, XTransfer’s self-developed large language model (LLM) tailored for the global foreign trade financial sector, which helps identify suspicious patterns earlier, prioritise alerts, reduce false positives, and support more consistent decisions across markets, strengthening AML and compliance at speed.

Neil also discussed XTransfer’s accelerating expansion in Africa, noting more than 300% growth in the region in 2025 as SMEs seek faster and lower-cost ways to manage cross-border trade payments. He added that XTransfer is focused on working with ecosystem partners and regulators to support safer, more standardised cross-border information flows, one reason XTransfer is building X-Net, the industry’s first Unified Global B2B Trade Settlement Network and Risk Control Platform, to enhance interoperability and shared security standards across payment rails.

“Building resilience requires collective effort,” Neil added.

Yango Fellowship launches at 6 African countries, empowering the next generation of STEM leaders

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, 17 December 2025-/African Media Agency (AMA)/-Yango Group, a global tech company, has announced the next chapter of its Yango Fellowship; a program designed to unlock the potential of STEM talent across Africa. By providing mentorship, resources, and networks, the Fellowship helps participants turn ideas into solutions that benefit their communities. After successfully launching in Zambia and Ivory Coast, Yango is bringing the program to four more countries – Mozambique, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Senegal.

The expanded Yango Fellowship will provide financial support, expert guidance, and access to a cross-country community of Fellows working on impactful solutions for their communities. As the last years students of the programme landed prestigious internships that will help them achieve significant results in their future careers, in 2026 Yango is moving beyond country levels and builds to create a network of STEM professionals that will function after the conclusion of the year’s programme, defying borders and uniting aspiring young people from different African regions.

Across Africa, the demand for skilled scientists, engineers, and technologists far exceeds the number of graduates entering these fields. The World Bank estimates a shortage of more than 2.5 million STEM professionals needed to support sustainable economic growth across sub-saharan Africa. At the same time, Africa’s rapidly growing youth population faces a persistent skills gap: only 10–15% of young people have access to quality digital or technical training, and fewer than 5% gain experience in fields such as programming, data analysis, or cybersecurity.

With 10–12 million young people entering the labor market each year and only about 3 million formal jobs created annually, the need for practical STEM education, mentorship, and career pathways is urgent. By expanding the fellowship to new regions, Yango aims to help build a diverse, capable, and future-ready STEM workforce, empowering students to develop solutions for challenges faced by their communities. The program encourages collaboration, creativity, and leadership, while building a supportive alumni network that spans the continent.

Adeniyi Adebayo‏ – ‏Chief Business Officer at Yango Group, said: “Africa has an extraordinary pool of talent, who bring creativity, and problem-solving energy. The Yango Fellowship is a hands-on program designed to support these talents, connecting young innovators with the mentorship, resources, and knowledge they need to develop solutions that benefit their communities. This year, the program will be held at our African hub in Abidjan, and with its expansion to six countries, we can share expertise, learn together, and harness technology to make a real impact across the continent.”

The Fellowship has already delivered meaningful impact: past Fellows have launched community projects and became role models in their countries. Yango’s local hubs play a key role in mentoring Fellows, ensuring the program strengthens both talent and local ecosystems.

Beyond the Fellowship, Yango is driving digital innovation by partnering with universities and educational organizations across its markets, sharing expertise with young data scientists and IT students. Through programs like Urban Mobility Hackathons, participants tackle real-world traffic prediction challenges, gaining skills they can apply to improve their cities and communities. All of Yango’s youth initiatives are designed to empower participants with practical knowledge while creating tangible benefits for their local communities and countries.

Applications are now open to university STEM students aged 18–25 in all six countries. Interested candidates can apply until January 26, 2026, at yangofellowship.com.

Backbase and African Banker Publish Landmark Report on Next-Gen Banking Innovations: AI, Cybersecurity, and Segment-Based Banking in Africa

LONDON, United Kingdom, 3 December 2025-/African Media Agency(AMA)/-Backbase, the leader in AI-powered banking, in partnership with African Banker magazine, has released the third edition of the Africa Digital Banking Experience Series 2025. The latest report, Next-gen Banking Innovations: AI, Cybersecurity & Segment-based Banking, reveals that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity are central to the digital transformation strategies of African banks, enabling them to achieve hyper-personalisation, drive growth, and manage escalating risks.

Drawing on insights from a survey of 203 senior banking executives across 40 African countries, the survey highlights a strong consensus among banking executives regarding the importance of AI in their medium-term strategies.

Key findings from the report include:

  • A vast majority of participating banks view AI as crucial, with 85.4% of respondents considering AI and AI-driven services as very or extremely important for improving operational efficiency and customer engagement over the next five years.
  • The most common application of AI is in customer services, including virtual assistants and chatbots, cited by 64.8% of banks surveyed. Fraud detection (47.7%) and enhanced credit scoring/lending (45.3%) are also primary areas of deployment.
  • A significant 81.5% of the banks consulted reported having experienced a cyber threat or attack over the past year. Phishing schemes and social engineering attacks, often powered by AI, are among the most common threats.
  • Banks are actively strengthening their defences, with 79.7% adopting enhanced cybersecurity measures and 67.2% increasing investment in cybersecurity infrastructure. Additionally, 60.9% have implemented real-time fraud detection systems.
  • Major challenges slowing AI implementation include the difficulty of integrating new technology with existing legacy systems (58.6%), high upfront implementation costs, the lack of skilled personnel, and concerns over data privacy and regulatory compliance.
  • Banks are moving beyond the traditional mass-market approach to deliver more individualized, meaningful experiences. This shift is driven by the need to meet the varied needs of a customer base that includes sophisticated mobile-first users and first-time digital users.

The report findings also signal that the African banking sector is at a decisive turning point. While regions like East Africa lead the way in integrating AI into digital strategies and North Africa prioritizes big data for enhanced security, the challenge of merging innovation with integrity is continent-wide.

Heidi Custers, Global Strategy & Transformation Director at Backbase, commented: “The most forward-thinking African banks are realising that growth and security are no longer separate strategies, they are two sides of the same digital coin. AI-driven engagement builds relationships; AI-driven security protects them. Segment-based banking ensures those experiences remain human, relevant, and inclusive.”

Backbase and African Banker launch landmark report on the future of digital banking in Africa

LONDON, United Kingdom, 8 August 2025-/African Media Agency (AMA)/- Backbase, the global leader in Engagement Banking, in partnership with the African Banker magazine, has launched the inaugural report in the Africa Digital Banking Experience Series 2025, a timely publication that explores the transformation of banking across the continent in an age of hyper-personalisation, AI integration, and financial inclusion.

The report “Retail banking: Competing for the modern African customer” is based on an exclusive survey of over 200 senior banking executives across 40 African countries. It provides a detailed, data-driven analysis of how African banks are shifting from traditional transactional models to AI-powered platforms that prioritise tailored customer journeys and operational efficiency.

Key findings from the report include:

  • Retail banking remains the main entry point for digital transformation, with 39% of banks prioritising it, followed by SMEs and corporate banking.
  • AI is becoming central to reaching the unbanked, with banks using alternative data and machine learning to de-risk credit and deliver scalable services beyond physical branches.
  • Operational efficiency, financial inclusion, and market share expansion are the top three digital priorities for African banks.
  • Banks are increasingly adopting omnichannel strategies, integrating online, mobile, and physical services to deliver seamless user experiences.

The biggest challenges remain digital literacy gaps (77%), cybersecurity concerns (55%), and limited internet access (52%), though all are expected to decrease with rising digital adoption and investment.

The report also features an in-depth case study of Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB), showcasing how the Backbase Engagement Banking Platform enabled MCB to rapidly scale and launch new digital services, from SME banking to retail wealth apps, with high satisfaction scores and accelerated feature rollout.

Heidi Custers, Global Strategy & Transformation Director at Backbase said: “This report shows just how far African banks have come in rethinking the customer experience. What stands out is the shift from one-size-fits-all products to more thoughtful, data-driven services. It’s not about chasing trends—it’s about making digital banking work for real people, at scale.”
