Hetherwick Ntaba caught lying in albino killings

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Hetherwick Ntaba lied to the nation that the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) cleared him on allegations of his alleged involvement in the killing of persons with albinism, The Maravi Post has learnt.

Ntaba: accused of blocking release of report on killings of people with albinism

Ntaba, who was presidential aide during the Authur Peter Mutharika (APM) reign, told a local media house on Friday that DPP Dr. Steven Kayuni cleared him from the accusations when Kayuni was Chief Legal Advocate.

He claimed that he personally went to the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution to inquire about the matter.

Ntaba further claimed that Kayuni told him that the allegations against him were “wild and baseless”.

The ‘talking computer ‘ – as he is fondly called by his admirers – said he was therefore surprised with reports that could face criminal charges together with Mutharika over the duo’s alleged involvement in the murder of Macdonald Masambuka – a man with albinism from Traditional Authority Nkoola in Machinga.

But an inquiry we conducted revealed that, at no point did Ntaba visit the DPP’s office to get the claimed clarification on the allegations as raised by the now convicted murderers during the trial.

Senior officials at the directorate, while seeking anonymity, described the sentiments Ntaba made as misleading and unfortunate.

“He’s just trying to buy the sympathy of Malawians. There’s no way an officer, let alone the Director of Public Prosecution himself, can clear someone suspected of committing a crime. Clearing him as who?” asked one of the senior officials.

President of the Association for Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) Young Muhamba said it is pointless for Mutharika and Ntaba to try to defend themselves through media platforms.

Muhamba challenged APM and Ntaba to defend themselves in a court of law.

DPP Secretary-General Gridezer Jeffrey wa Jeffrey,

A group of five renowned Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), through the lawyer Wesley Mwafulirwa, this week penned the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and requested it to return the monies it received from parastatals and city councils during its fundraising dinner known as Blue Night; this must be done within seven days.

On 29 July, 2017 during the Blue Night fundraising event in Lilongwe, DPP received millions of Kwachas from the parastatals and councils.

The rulling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Secretary General, Greselder Jeffrey wa Jeffrey has openly rebuffed the Malawi Law Society request; she said DPP will not pay back the money that parastatals and other Government agencies gave it during its recent Blue Night fund raising event that was held in Lilongwe.

Maravi Post established that Mzuzu and Blantyre City Councils are among those affected that donated millions of Kwachas of taxpayers money to the Blue night event.

According to the report, the money was taken by the Party’s Vice President for the central region Dr Hetherwick Ntaba after exerting pressure on them.

Soon after the report, some Civil Society Organizations, including the Mzuzu-based Youth and Society (YAS) whose Executive Director Charles Kajoloweka, asked DPP officials to pay back the money, and that the institutions that are yet to pay the money, should cancel the transactions.

However, Ntaba, who chaired the fundraising event, also denied to refund the cash saying “the parastatals and councils that made pledges or paid the money, did so willingly hence the Party’s stand not to return the cash.”

Ntaba’s reaction angered YAS organization; consequently, it gave the DPP a 14-days ultimatum to refund the cash or face an unspecified action.

The ruling DPP however, maintained its position that it will not return the cash.

In a statement made available to Maravi Post on Monday, the Malawi Law Society joined the Civil Society Organisations, who condemning the DPP for receiving the donations; they said that it was misuse and abuse of public funds.

“The issue concerning management of public funds, is an issue of law. Such being the case, the Society feels duty-bound to register its protestation in the strongest terms possible, the blatant misuse and abuse of public funds by parastatal organizations and other government agencies,” reads part of the statement signed by Chairperson Khumbo Soko.

In her immediate response to the statement, DPP Secretary-General Gridezer Jeffrey wa Jeffrey, said the Malawi Law Society calls is a waste of time.

“Zimenezo ndiye timati zachamba (That is nonsense),” said wa Jeffrey.

According to her, the Law Society should name the Party officials who forced parastatals and Councils to donate to ‘Blue Night’.

The Law Society statement did not specify the action it will take against DPP failure to refund the money.

In February last year, DPP received K10 million from Lilongwe Water Board through a similar ‘Blue Night’ scheme.
