Brazil records deadliest 24 hours of Covid-19 pandemic

Medical staff members transport a patient on a stretcher at the Pedro Dell Antonia Sports Complex field hospital as coronavirus cases soar

As some parts of the world are easing Covid-19 restrictions due to low positivity rate, Brazil smashed its previous daily record with 4,195 Covid-19 fatalities, health ministry data Tuesday showed — marking the highest death count in the world for that 24-hour period, according to CNN.

The publication indicates that the new figures pushed Brazil’s total pandemic death toll to almost 337,000.

Additionally, nearly 87,000 new Covid-19 cases were reported across the country, raising the total tally of infections to 13,100,580, according to the health ministry.

Different quarters in the country have attributed the increasing numbers to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s opposition to Covid-19 restrictions.

It is reported that President Bolsonaro has been reluctant to effect lockdown and has repeatedly opposed lockdowns and restrictive measures, and criticized governors and mayors with insulting language for implementing them.

Global Covid-19 cases have risen for the sixth consecutive week, according to the World Health Organization’s Weekly Epidemiological Update on Tuesday.

Brazil, the US, Turkey, France and India are reporting the highest case numbers.

Brazil President fires healthy minister over country’s covid-19 response

Written by Angella Semu

Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro

Brazil’s Health Minister, Luiz Henrique Mandetta has been fired following a collide with Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro over response to coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Mandetta made the announcement on Twitter following a meeting with Bolsonaro at the presidential palace in the capital Brasilia.

Reports have revealed that Bolsonaro and Mandetta have clashed for weeks over the need for widespread social isolation in the country to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to AFP news, Mandetta, 55,  who has been heathy minister since early 2019 has been promoting isolation as a tool to contain the spread of the virus which Bolsonaro objected claiming the measures are unnecessary and economically harmful.

The relationship between the president and the healthy minister has deteriorated since the start of the virus crisis due to their incongruity in how to respond to the Pandemic.

Other reports have revealed that the president has been downplaying the threat of the coronavirus describing it as a “little flu,” which can be dealt with using unproven drugs like hydroxychloroquine.

Brazil has so far about 30,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus with more than 2,000 recorded deaths.
