Kinnah Phiri praises Sulom President Haiya

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(Maravipost)-The former Malawi National football team forward, Kinnah Phiri, has praised and commended the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) President, Fleetwood Haiya for a successful 2023 season.

Phiri observes that with the coming of Haiya, football lovers have witnessed huge competition in Malawi’s top league.

“Look at the fixtures in the first round, teams played a game per week for the first time in many years. Subvention was raised from MK1 million to MK10 million for the teams. Officials were on point despite some challenges.

“This proves to us that we need changes in the country’s football administration to make strides”, Kinnah said on the TNM Soccer Show on Zodiak Monday.

Kinnah Phiri is the Malawi National Team’s all-time top goal scorer with 71 goals, known by “Electric”, he also banged over 30 goals in the country’s top league in the late 1980s.

Echoing the same, former football administrator, and Analyst, Charles “The Grandmaster” Nyirenda said, the 2023 season has been a success under the leadership of Fleetwood Haiya.

“He has also announced the increment of the subvention to MK20 million next season, which is a great gesture to teams especially those who are run by individuals.

“This is evidently that if he is elected as FAM President in the forthcoming elections, he can deliver to the fullest and the sport will tremendously develop”, said Nyirenda.

Fleetwood Haiya is challenging the incumbent FAM president Walter Nyamilandu in the December 16, 2023 elections slated for Mzuzu.

The TNM Super League season in Malawi concluded on Sunday with FCB Nyasa Big Bullets FC defending the title for the fifth time in a row after playing to a 1-1 draw against Silver Strikers FC at Kamuzu Stadium in the commercial City of Blantyre.

Tanzanian football club eyes another Malawian coach

Tanzanian Premier League side Mbeya City Council FC has opened negotiations with another Malawian coach Christopher Nyambose on the prospects of taking him on board to replace Kinnah Phiri.

Earlier this month Kinnah Phiri parted company with the Tanzanian club by mutual dissent.

Nyambose is currently head coach of Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) Simama Premier League side Fish Eagles.

Nyambose told Maravi Post sports desk on Tuesday that “I had a surprise visit by Mbeya officials on Wednesday last week and they asked him if I could be interested to take up the challenge.”

“So, I gave them my conditions and I am waiting to hear from them,” said Nyambose who holds two UEFA coaching licences obtained in England and Germany.

He however denied to disclose the conditions.

Mbeya information officer Shah Mjanja confirmed that the club held discussions with Nyambose, but are yet to make a final decision.

He said should the deal materialise, Nyambose will be deputised by Mohammed Kijuso who is currently the caretaker coach.

In an earlier interview Kinnah Phiri, the former Flames striker and tactician, had claimed that he left his job as he had gone 5 months without being paid his salary.

FAM not happy with govt’s delay to hire coach

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)–Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Executive Committee has expressed worries over the delay by government to hire expatriate coach.

Fam has said this ahead of its meeting which will  decide whether or not to keep waiting for the government’s decision on hiring Malawi National Football Team’s expatriate coach.

Speaking with Daily Times, Fam President, Walter Nyamilandu, on Monday admitted that, with the African Nations Championship qualifiers getting underway in April, there was every reason for the football fraternity to panic over the absence of the coach.

“We are meeting over the weekend and one of the items on agenda is to look at the position of the national coach. The delays are not doing us any favour. We need to make a decision on whether we should continue waiting or discuss an alternative,” Nyamilandu explained as quoted by the Daily Times.

The Fam boss said it was only his board that could, if need be, decide on the plan B for the Flames’ next mentor to replace Ernest Mtawali, whose contract was not extended beyond July 31 2016.

The team also has tough 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying assignments for Group B against Cameroon, Morocco, Mauritius/ Comoros islands. The qualifiers will start in June.

Fam proposed to the Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development the hiring of an expatriate coach with the line Minister, Henry Mussa, referring the proposal to President Peter Mutharika for his final approval.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Symon Mbvundula, yesterday said he would follow up with his superiors on the coach’s issue.

Weekend Nation over the weekend quoted Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, indicating that most expatriate coaches were demanding perks in the region of K9 million. Fam has proposed a 50-50 sharing system with the government for the coach’s salary.

A local Flames’ coach earns around K1.5 million. Locals Kinnah Phiri and the late Henry Moyo are considered as the most successful having steered the team to 1984 and 2010 Afcon finals in Cote d’Ivoire and Angola, respectively.

Recently, the Tanzania’s Mbeya City FC Kinnah dismissed Nyamilandu’s assertions that Fam has with little success exhausted all domestic coaches. Fam wants a coach capable of also developing the country’s distinct playing philosophy.

Eddingtone Ng’onano, Gilbert Chirwa, Lawrence Waya and Yasin Osman are among the locals said to be angling for the Flames’ job with the expatriates in the picture being Honor Janza of Zambia, Bruce Globbelaar (Liverpool goalkeeping great) and Bobby Williamson (ex- Uganda’s Cecafa Cup record-winning Scottish coach).
