NTCHEU-(MANA)-Malawi President, who is also Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Presidential candidate for the 16 September election, Lazarus Chakwera, has told the people of Ntcheu North constituency that Lizulu will have modern structures and become an international market.

Chakwera made the remarks on Wednesday during a campaign whistle-stop at Lizulu Market in the district.

He said the market borders with Mozambique whose people are Malawi’s brothers and sisters.

Chakwera noted that the borders were created by colonialists but he said when one crosses to Mozambique there’s Inkosi Zintambila who is also a Ngoni as the people of Ntcheu.

“Lizulu is a big market and being a border market with various food commodities and many other businesses, it deserves to become an international market,” said Chakwera adding that factories will be constructed for processing and value addition.

He asked people of Ntcheu North to vote for him and Everlisto Chodzadza for President and Member of Parliament, respectively.

On his part, Paramount Chief Gomani V said he was excited with the President’s visit to the area.

The communities around Lizulu market in Ntcheu, on Sunday morning demolished shops belonging to Burundian nationals, police have confirmed.

Ntcheu police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, said the incidence occurred after the communities suspected that the Burundians were responsible for the death of a certain woman on Saturday. According to police, the community then decided to chase the Burundians out of the area.

“They started demolishing all the shops that belong to Burundians, and …… a number of shops have been affected,” said Chigalu.

“Everything is in order now as we managed to settle down the situation,” he added.

When asked if it is true that a police officer shot one of the civilians, Chigalu said “it was the Mozambican police who fired the shot, and as of now the victim is admitted at Dedza hospital.”

However, no arrests have been made in the incident.
