The communities around Lizulu market in Ntcheu, on Sunday morning demolished shops belonging to Burundian nationals, police have confirmed.
Ntcheu police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, said the incidence occurred after the communities suspected that the Burundians were responsible for the death of a certain woman on Saturday. According to police, the community then decided to chase the Burundians out of the area.
“They started demolishing all the shops that belong to Burundians, and …… a number of shops have been affected,” said Chigalu.
The police spokesperson said the fracas also spread to the neighboring Mozambique.
However, Chigalu said both the Mozambican and Malawian police managed to calm the situation.
“Everything is in order now as we managed to settle down the situation,” he added.
When asked if it is true that a police officer shot one of the civilians, Chigalu said “it was the Mozambican police who fired the shot, and as of now the victim is admitted at Dedza hospital.”
However, no arrests have been made in the incident.
