Mzuni FC vows to come back strong after Nchalo United defeat

Mzuzu University (Mzuni) Football Club (FC) says it will go back to the drawing board to ensure the team starts winning following its 1-0 loss to Nchalo United in a 2018/19 league opener on Saturday.

Speaking in an interview after the match, Mzuni’s team manager, McNebert Kazuwa said his charges failed to cope with Nchalo United players’ fast pace.

“We failed to contain the fast play of our opponents as we were slow and second on the ball,” Kazuwa said.

He further said the team has trust in the current squad and it will turn the tables soon.

“We trust the boys and I am confident that come the next game they will deliver for the team considering the display which they showed in the second half of the match. We were attacking but we were betrayed by lack of fire power,” he said.

Kazuwa asked Mzuni’s fans not to despair saying the team would come back strong in the next game.

On his part, Nchalo United coach, Charles Manda hailed his boys for the fighting spirit which afforded them a dream start for their debut season.

“I thank God and the fighting spirit by my players as they are just young stars, fresh from the second tier league,” Manda said.

A stunning header in the 13th minute from Ishmael Ziyembe was enough to seal victory for the lower Shire based side.

Despite the win, Nchalo United loses the three points following a punishment by the country’s football governing body after the team was found guilty for attempted match fixing last year in a Carlsberg cup game against Chitipa United.

Chilumba Barracks against releasing players to join Karonga Utd

Chilumba Barracks says it will not allow any of its players to join Karonga United, a team that stopped it from winning the 2017 Northern Region Simama Premier League.

The decision frustrates efforts by the Northern Region Football Association (NRFA), to prepare Karonga United into a more vibrant team, following its recent promotion to the TNM Super League.

The association has organized a bonanza on Saturday and Sunday at Karonga Stadium to allow Karonga United an opportunity to scout and sign new players to strengthen its squad in readiness for the 2018 season.

However, during the bonanza draw for the top four teams in Simama Premier League on Thursday at Katoto Secondary School in Mzuzu, coach for the military outfit, Kelvin Kuyewawa said his team cannot afford to release any player to Karonga United.

“We will take part in this bonanza to help them fine tune their squad and not to weaken our side. We, too, have something to achieve in the coming season, which is just around the corner. Thinking of poaching players from us is a far-fetched dream,” Kuyewawa said.

In contrast to Chilumba Barracks position, Bolero United said it was comfortable with the arrangement.

One of the team’s officials Patrick Nyirenda was, however, quick to point out that it might be too late for Karonga United to be searching for players now.

“I would suggest that they should concentrate on their current squad rather than continue bloating their team with new players who might not be able to jell on time,” Nyirenda said.

NRFA chairperson Felix Msiska underscored the importance of the bonanza saying it was worrisome that NRFA teams get relegated in the same year of their promotion into the Super League.

“We don’t want to see them struggling and get relegated in the same year of their promotion into the league,” Msiska said.

Karonga United, Chilumba Barracks, Bolero United and Rumphi Pirates will battle it out in the bonanza.

Goodbye: TNM officially withdraws Malawi’s Super League sponsorship

TNM officially withdraws Super League Sponsorship

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-One of the county’s telecommunication company, Telecom Networks of Malawi (TNM) on Tuesday officially announced it is withdrawing its sponsorship of the Super League championships following Completion and Fair Trade Commission (CFTC) ruling that the service provider should stop monopolizing other companies to have a place in the league.

The CFTC verdict came a few weeks Super League of Malawi (Sulom) was about to renew the contract with TNM; the organization argued that clubs should be allowed to enter into agreements with other service providers without any obstructions.

The commission’s ruling stated that the “CFTC established that the sponsorship agreement that TNM signed with Sulom had some clause that were restrictive and potentially prevented Sulom and football teams participating in the Super League from accessing sponsorship from competitors of TNM.”

The ruling did no please the mobile and data service provider saying it however, respects CFTC ruling that other potential sponsors should take part in developing Malawi’s football.

In letter to Sulom and copied to Football Association of Malawi (FAM), signed by TNM’s Chief Executive Offer Douglas Steveson, disclosed that the company has made the decision to fully withdraw from sponsoring the league.

Steveson said that the company respects and abide by the CFTC determination on the matter and said that TNM would not want to be found acting in a manner that has negative effects on the development of Malawi’s football.

He added that Sulom is therefore at liberty to engage those willing to sponsor the flagship for the development of football in Malawi.

“TNM would like to thank SULOM, FAM, all soccer fans, and the company’s loyal subscribers for the opportunity given to grow with the league over the past 10 years.

“We hope that the progress of football had made significantly due to our decade long dedication to the Super League can be leveraged by future sponsors for the good of sport”, Steveson said.

In his reaction, SULOM General Secretary Williams Banda while observing that TNM withdraw is a big blow, he quickly assured the nation of hunting for other sponsors before the season kicks off next month.

TNM invested the equivalent of about MK2.6 billion towards the Super League in the past 10 years in monitory and other investments.
