Airtel Africa Foundation rollout “Nzeru Fund” Tech scholarships for Malawi’s needy students

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Airtel Africa Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Airtel Africa plc on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 launched scholarship fund for Malawi’s needy students.

The localized initiative called “Nzeru Fund’ will award 25 Tech Scholarships to Malawi undergraduates from low-income households, enabling them to pursue degrees in STEM fields at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST).

The programme directly tackles the financial and skills barriers that prevent young Africans from accessing the digital economy.

In partnership with the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) , “Nzeru Fund ’will support high-achieving first-year students requiring financial support to pursue programs in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Technology, Software Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Cybersecurity for the full duration of their courses at the university’s Thyolo and Blantyre campuses.

Speaking during the launch ceremony, Airtel Malawi plc Managing Director, Mr. Aashish Dutt, said, “Education is at the heart of nation-building. ‘Nzeru Fund’ scholarships represents Airtel’s belief that every brilliant young Malawian deserves a fair chance to succeed regardless of their background. By investing in these future STEM leaders, we are investing in Malawi’s digital future, ensuring that no capable student is left behind.”

Commending the initiative, The Malawi University of Science and Technology Vice Chancellor, Mauakowa Malata emphasized its impact on national development; “We are deeply grateful to Airtel Malawi and the Airtel Africa Foundation for this extraordinary
commitment to our students. Many bright young people lose opportunities due to financial
constraints.

“The ‘Nzeru Fund’ scholarships will not only transform their lives but will also contribute significantly to Malawi’s advancement in science, technology, and innovation.”

In addition to a full tuition scholarship, beneficiaries of the programme will also receive a monthly stipend, hostel accommodation fees, a monthly data bundle, and a once-off pocket Wi-Fi device.

This holistic approach ensures that scholars are well equipped for academic success and can develop into well-rounded individuals.

MUST students revolutionize ID tracking, parcel delivery with innovative solutions

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In a remarkable display of innovation and technological prowess, three students from the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) have been awarded MK800,000 for developing an Identity Card tracker.

This groundbreaking system, designed to assist the National Registration Bureau (NRB) and citizens in tracking the production process of ID cards, promises to eliminate long queues and unnecessary travel for card collection.

The students, pursuing a degree in Business Information Technology, were recognized for their outstanding work under the ‘MUST 2030’ initiative, which focuses on creating solutions to everyday challenges faced by Malawians.

According to Taina Mfune, a representative of the students, the adoption of this technology would significantly streamline the ID card production process.

Another notable achievement comes from 21-year-old Malumbo Thindwa, who has invented a Courier Tracker System.

This innovative solution enables easy tracing of parcels, further showcasing the university’s commitment to harnessing technology for practical problem-solving.

MUST’s emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship is evident in its academic programs, which include a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in fields like engineering, computer science, and biomedical sciences.

Chakwera for productive graduands as MUST send off 551

BLANTYRE-(MANA)-President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on Thursday presided over graduation of the 6th congregation at Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Thyolo where 551 students graduated with certificates, diplomas and degrees in various programmes.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Chakwera, who is also the Chancellor for MUST, challenged the newly graduating students to be productive for the nation to benefit from investments made through their education.

“You must inspire Malawi to move from a nation of consumers to a nation of producers. Today you are graduating from one of the most productive universities, we expect you to be productive because wherever you go, the world will judge the potential of MUST through you,” he added.

The President also commended MUST for contributing to the country’s socio-economic development through fields such as; entrepreneurship, digitisation, innovativeness and agriculture.

MUST Council Chairperson, Boyd Luwe said since MUST opened its doors in 2014, the institution increases student enrollment, offer more undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, conduct cutting-edge research, and venture into entrepreneurship.

“I am happy to report that from 2014 to date, our student population has grown from 150 to over 5,200; our academic offerings have expanded from 3 undergraduate programmes to 27, and from 2 postgraduate programmes to 21, including PhDs.

“In 2014, we were only offering face-to-face undergraduate classes, but today, we also offer Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL) and weekend programmes. We now admit generic students, full economic fee-paying students, and mature entry students. Our profile of postgraduate programmes, which was only at two in 2014, continues to grow and now has over twenty programmes,” he added.

Luwe disclosed that the MUST Endowment Fund, which was established in 2021, to ensure that all students regardless of background are able to complete their studies, now stands at around MK7 billion such that 120 needy students were supported last year alone.

The 6th congregation graduation was held under the theme: Aligning skills and knowledge with industry and community needs.

The graduands were comprised of 406 males and 145 females.

Malawi Urged to Invest in Biodiversity Planning

Principal Secretary for Natural Resources and Climate Change, Yusuf Mkungura, has emphasized the need for Malawi to invest in proper planning and programming to effectively protect its biodiversity.

Speaking in Salima during a mid-project forum for the Spatial Biodiversity Assessment and Planning Project (SBAPP) Regional Project, Mkungura highlighted the importance of planning in sustainable biodiversity conservation.

The SBAPP project, led by the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) with support from the Government of France, aims to improve spatial biodiversity assessments and planning in Southern Africa.

The project involves Malawi, South Africa, Namibia, and Mozambique, and is designed to promote sustainable development and conservation of biodiversity in the region.

Mkungura noted that without proper planning, it is impossible to sustainably protect biodiversity or measure progress. “We cannot sustainably protect our biodiversity or measure progress without proper planning,” he said.

He emphasized the need for Malawi to invest in planning and programming to ensure the effective conservation of its biodiversity.

The French Embassy Climate Counsellor, Ghousse Gaffar, reiterated the Government of France’s commitment to supporting the SBAPP project.

“We support this project to stop misuse and ensure conservation,” Gaffar said. The project is expected to contribute significantly to the conservation of biodiversity in the region and promote sustainable development.

The SBAPP project is a critical initiative that will help Malawi and other participating countries to improve their biodiversity conservation efforts.

By investing in proper planning and programming, Malawi can ensure the sustainable protection of its biodiversity and promote economic development that is environmentally friendly.

The project’s focus on spatial biodiversity assessments and planning will provide valuable insights and tools for policymakers and conservationists to make informed decisions about biodiversity conservation.

MUST and MCA forge strategic 5-year partnership to transform higher education in Malawi

The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) and the Malawi College of Accountancy (MCA) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking the beginning of a five-year collaborative journey aimed at strengthening Malawi’s higher education sector.

The agreement, signed recently, outlines a strategic partnership between the two institutions, with the primary objective of driving academic excellence and institutional growth.

Among the key focus areas of the partnership are joint research initiatives, co-authored publications, professional consultancies, graduate support programs, and comprehensive capacity-building efforts.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost )-The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Malawi College of Accountancy (MCA) on Monday signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing their academic and professional collaboration.

In an interview with journalists,MUST Director of Outreach, Professor Alfred Maluwa said the partnership will focus on key areas such as joint research and publication, collaborative project bids, graduate support, and capacity building initiatives including staff-student exchange programs.

He said the partnership is expected to bridge existing gaps in accountancy, academics, and project management, ultimately benefiting both institutions.

On her part,MCA Principal Christina Chithira hailed the partnership as a significant milestone, highlighting opportunities for mutual learning, joint project implementation, and staff exchange that will enrich MCA’s new academic programs.

TEVETA, MUST into youth entrepreneurship promotion Pact agreement

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Technical, Entrepreneurial, and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA) have signed a pact agreement aimed at advancing youth innovation.

This partnership represents a shared vision to enhance education, innovation, and skills development for the benefit of the nation and its people.

TEVETA’s Chief Executive Director, Elwin Chiwembu Sichiola, stated that collaborating with MUST—a prestigious institution at the forefront of science and technology—is a significant step towards achieving academic excellence and practical skills development.

Sichiola explained that the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) provides a foundation for fostering synergy between the two institutions, allowing educational programs to align with labor market demands.

“The MOU will promote entrepreneurship and cultivate a skilled workforce capable of driving Malawi’s socio-economic growth,” said Sichiola.

Richard Nkhoma, a representative from MUST, mentioned that the MOU will establish a framework for entry qualifications for TEVET graduates at MUST.

Nkhoma emphasized that the collaboration will enhance employability and self-employment opportunities for young TEVETA graduates and out-of-school youth, with a particular focus on gender equity and environmental principles.

“This collaboration will bring together multiple stakeholders to train young entrepreneurs, generate and promote agricultural innovation, and implement mechanisms that improve productivity in youth-targeted agricultural value chains,” Nkhoma added.

Chakwera pledges equal treatment for Malawians

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera has assured the people of Thyolo that he will take care of every Malawian regardless of their political connections.

President Chakwera made the remarks on Thursday, to a crowd that had gathered outside Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST)’s main entrance as he made his way out of the Campus, heading for Sanjika Palace.

Earlier in the day, President Chakwera attended tho 5th Congregation of MUST University send-off.

In his remarks, Chakwera emphasized that the country belongs to every Malawian and as such, his main goal is to ensure equal distribution of the national cake.

On this note, the Malawi leader called on all Malawians to coexist peacefully irrespective of different political views.

Chakwera explained that his administration is working around the clock to address social and economic ills affecting Malawians.

“The country belongs to everyone and as such, let’s continue holding hands with government to develop Malawi,” he said.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Director of Youth Baba Malondela hailed the president for adjusting upwards the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), saying the gesture will go a long way in transforming the lives of many Malawians.

Chakwera inaugurates MUST 5th graduation

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera, on Thursday, October 17, 2024 presided over the 5th Congregation of Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), at its Campus in Thyolo District.

The event marked a double celebration, as the University also celebrated a decade of it’s existence of pioneering Science, Technology and Innovation in Malawi.

A total of 610 students were awarded Certificates, Diploma and Degress.

Upon his arrival, President Chakwera, who was welcomed by top government officials, toured MUST Teaching Hospital, inspected pavilions in the University Library, and also unveiled a MUST 10th Anniversary Commemoration Plague.

Standard Bank pumps MK15m into girls science at MUST

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Standard Bank Plc has invested MK15 million in the Girls Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Camp at Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), underscoring its commitment to support young women in science education while advancing gender equality.

The donation from Standard Bank will directly support the camp’s initiatives, including technology workshops, art workshops, and sponsoring of the underprivileged girls to attend the camp.

The MUST STEAM Girls Camp aims to inspire and empower girls to explore and pursue careers in STEAM.

Standard Bank’s Client Coverage Manager, Pempho Chalamanda said that the donation reiterates the bank’s core purpose of driving Malawi’s growth.

“Standard Bank believes in the transformative power of STEAM education and inclusivity. By investing in the Girls STEAM Camp at MUST, we are investing in a future of innovation and leadership with more female representation,” said Chalamanda.

Through partnership with MUST, Standard Bank aims to make a lasting impact in the lives of girls and inspire female participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.

Standard Bank has commended MUST for coming up with the STEAM Camp for girls saying that the intervention contributes significantly to encouraging girls to feel confident and motivated to participate in these disciplines.

Chairperson of the MUST STREAM Girls Camp Dr. Marion Chirwa Kajombo has commended Standard Bank for the support saying it will create great possibilities for girls at the institution.

“We appreciate the support from Standard Bank. It has enabled us to reach out to needy students lacking motivation and inspiration to realize their dreams. Some do not have any hope but through the camp, their lives will change because the intervention will open opportunities for girls to be exposed to several career pathways through interaction with role models,” said Kajombo.

Standard Bank earlier this year donated MK20 million to MUST as its annual contribution towards the university’s endowment fund that offers scholarships to underprivileged students.

The Bank continues to support education initiatives that improve the access and quality of education for the youth of the nation.

The MUST STEAM Girls Camp will started on July 1 and it will end on July 12 at the institution’s campus in Thyolo.

NBS Bank Plc aids MUST with MK24m underprivileged students

 BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-NBS Bank Plc has supported four Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) underprivileged students with MK24 million.

The donation falls under the Bank’s scholarship program which was implemented to empower the youth by enhancing their secondary and tertiary education.

NBS Bank’s Head of Treasury Sales, South,  Dindwase Jere said the Bank did not hesitate to help when approached, because of its passion for youth development and the promotion of education.

“As NBS Bank Plc one of our core areas for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is education, so this request came as a no-brainer. We are also making inroads on the business front and we look forward to a long fruitful relationship. We thank MUST for offering this opportunity for partnership,” said Jere.

MUST Vice Chancellor Professor Address Malata thanked NBS Bank for the support which she said will go a long way in shaping the student’s future.

“Students face a lot of challenges, that is why as a university we make efforts to ensure they have the required resources. You may wish to know that we also introduced the MUST Endowment Fund so that we are able to deal with such challenges at the University level,” said Malata. 

The donation is intended to cater for the tuition fees, as well as the upkeep of the students for their duration of studies at the University.
