Malawi’s LUANAR Prof Peter Mumba death: Wife arrested for allegedly poisoning husband

A wife to late Professor Peter Mumba

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Police in the capital Lilongwe are keeping in custody a wife to late Professor Peter Mumba for allegedly putting poison into the deceased’s food.

Untill his death, Professor Mumba was working at Lilongwe University of Natural Resources (LUANAR), Bunda College.

According to a postmortem examination report by two pathologists, Professor Ndalama George Liomba and Dr Charles Dzamalala, late Mumba died on April 25, 2020, after consuming food which the wife prepared.

“On the night of 24 April 2020, at about midnight, Mr. Francis Mumba was called by the wife of the deceased informing him that his brother was unconscious and was going to be taken to hospital at St. John Hospital in Mitundu. A similar message came a little later from his sister.

“The wife reported that the deceased had come home from work around 6pm. He exchanged vehicles and went out. He returned home around 8 pm. He had dinner and then went to sleep sometime between of the 9.30 and 10 pm. A couple of hours later the wife said she heard a groaning voice from the bedroom. She found her husband complaining of feeling weak. He then fainted and became unconscious. She called the Bunda College doctor to see
the patient.

“The patient was taken to St John hospital and later taken to Partners in Hope
Hospital. Here the attending doctor informed the relatives that the patient was brought in already dead,” reads the report in part.

The report has, therefore, disclosed that the cause of death was acute poisoning with a chemical compound – an unnatural cause
of death.

However, the nature and type of this toxic chemical compound is yet to be named as the process
awaits further qualitative and quantitative toxicological analyses to be conducted by a toxicology laboratory outside the country as it cannot be done locally and that obvious natural causes of death were established; foul play cannot be excluded.

Until his demise, Professor Mumba, who before the death was processing his MK100 million pension at LUANAR.

He hailed from Chidakalala Village, Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba District.
