India’ Sharda University increases scholarship intake for Malawians by 50%

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-One of the India’s leading higher learning institutions Sharda University has increased scholarships for this year’s Malawians students intake by 50%.

Sharda University on Monday, March 17, 2025 told the news conference in the capital Lilongwe that this year’s scholarships offer 200 places to Malawians to study at its campus in India.

The University’ Country Manager for Malawi Rahul Pal said the scholarships are aimed at supporting Malawi in training experts in various fields.

Pal added that those applying for various course, programme will not face challenges in processing tuition fees as are to be paid in local currency, Malawi Kwacha.

He assured the nation that the university will be impartial when offering scholarships to Malawians students.

Ministry of Education spokesperson Mphatso Nkuonera said, “This is in line with the Malawi 2063 vision which needs educated and skilled citizens to be achieved”.

Nkuonera also assured that only deserved students applying for the courses are given places to study at the University without favor, biased.

The university which was established through an act of the state legislature of Uttar Pradesh 14 of 2009 started offering scholarships to Malawian students in 2017 and so far over 300 students have benefited.

Education Ministry shuts down Chaminade Marianist Secondary School over corporal punishment, governance issues

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi government, through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has closed Chaminade Marianist Secondary School in Lilongwe on the basis of administering corporal punishment and governance issues.

The Public Relations Officer for the Ministry, Mphatso Nkuonera confirmed the news on Friday and described the use of corporal punishment as an act that is archaic and against the laws of the country.

“it is true that the ministry has closed Chaminade Marianist Secondary School for administering corporal punishment, as you are aware, this act is against the laws of country and the closure is effective immediately,” Nkuonera said.

Chaminade Marianist Secondary School becomes the first school to be closed by the Ministry in 2025 for failing to comply with the laws of the country.

Mchinji’s Kamwanya CDSS learners burnt 7, 200 text-books to ashes

MCHINJI-(MaraviPost)-Kamwanya Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) students in th the boarder district of Mchinji have burnt their library to ashes which stocked 7,200 text-books.

The students have also disfigured newly built twin-lab, thus, an ICT laboratory inclusive.

The misconduct comess barely two weeks after students at Mphomwa Community Day Secondary School in Kasungu smashed window panes and damaged many other teaching and learning materials,

The development happens when two other secondary schools in Ntcheu District, Khola and Nachitheme remain closed after students vandalized the schools leaving them unfit for teaching and learning for teaching and learning to take place.

Ministry of Education’ Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mphatso Nkuonera has confirmed on the incident in an interview.

“We are saddened to confirm on the disgusting vandalism incident at Kamwanya CDSS in Mchinji District, which took place around 10 pm, on Sunday, 17th March, 2024,” said Nkuonera.

The rioting students have set ablaze the school library, broke window panes for all old classroom blocks, and 3 window panes on the newly constructed Equity with Quality Learning at Secondary (EQUALS) Project structures.

*At Kamwanya CDSS, the Ministry is constructing one classroom block, a twin science laboratory, an ICT/Library block which are at 77% completion,” Nkuonera explained.

He added that the school has put in place strict discipline measures to curb student intimate relationships, hence the reaction from male students.

The PRO said the ministry will not exercise any linience but to met out stiffer punishment accordingly.

“Nine students have already been incarcerated for this vandalism by Mchinji police. We will apply the laws that govern the ministry, if it is expulsion they will be expelled, if it is suspension rustication we will do this is our schools.

“We appeal to parents and guardians, the faith community, local and traditional leaders, civil society organizations and all other stakeholders to rally behind the ministry in dealing with indiscipline issues in schools, as they are complex in nature,” he said.

Last term students also vandalized Ntcheu, St Don Bosco and Robert Blake secondary schools which have not been repaired yet.

Recently the Ministry of Education has registered increased cases of vandalism in school with bias at secondary.
