Africa Re-Union Debuts at FNB Art Joburg: Africa Turns the Map, the Table and the Story

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, 9 September 2025/African Media Agency (AMA)/- The Africa Re-Union, a landmark artistic initiative, is to be unveiled at the FNB Art Joburg, transforming the fair into a stage of reclamation and imagination, where art became manifesto and memory became movement. It reverses the context of the infamous 1884 Berlin Conference — where Africa was carved and divided without consent — by restoring the continent as author of its own story and architect of its own destiny.

Conceived and co-created by pan-African thinker and founder of Brand Africa, Thebe Ikalafeng, realised on canvas by South African artist Mark Modimola, and anchored in history by Professor Kwesi DLS Prah, the Africa Re-Union is not simply an artwork but a provocative declaration to reimagine the African story and history.

The monumental 3m x 2m canvas inverts Africa—literally and philosophically—using the

Equal Earth projection to restore the continent’s true scale and dignity. Rendered without

borders, it corrects centuries of cartographic distortion that made Africa appear small, coinciding with Africa No Filter, Speak Up Africa and the African Union’s recent call to rectify the misrepresentation of Africa in global maps. The work amplifies the broader Correct the Map campaign, a movement that challenges outdated cartography and calls for equal-area maps that restore Africa’s true size, scale, and significance in the world, and Brand Africa’s broader mission to contribute to the AU 2063 agenda for an integrated, peaceful, and prosperous Africa.

At the heart of the work stands a round table — because here there is no hierarchy, every voice matters equally. Seated are some of the diverse and impactful voices that have shaped Africa’s past and are re-imagining its future: Ghana’s founding president Kwame Nkrumah, Kenyan environmental advocate Wangari Maathai, South Africa’s Nelson Mandela, the frontline independence leaders Julius Nyerere and Kenneth Kaunda, host of hte founding of the OAU, Haile Selassie, Cabo Verde and Guinea Bissau’s Amílcar Cabral, Senegalese thought leaders Léopold Senghor and Cheikh Anta Diop, proponent of the United States of Africa, Muammar Gaddafi, Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, youth activist Zulaikha Patel, the diaspora W.E.B. Du Bois, Dambisa Moyo and freed slave Sojourner Truth, South African sanusis, South African singer, Mirriam Makeba, the first artist to address the United Nations in 1963, cultural activist and sanusi, Credo Mutwa, pan-African advocate for a brand-led renaissance and convenor, Thebe Ikalafeng, and advocate of the African renaissance, former South African president, Thabo Mbeki. Their presence affirms that Africa’s story has always had authors—even when unrecognised. It’s a gathering of the diaspora, the enslaved whose voices were stolen, the revolutionaries and artists, the freedom fighters and feminists, writers, sanusis, and youth across the private and public sectors and the civil service. Together, they embody the unfinished conversation of Africa’s identity, memory and destiny.

One chair is left empty at the table. It is the most important seat of all — a call to action. It belongs to the unborn child who will inherit this Africa, the ancestor whose spirit still hovers, the diaspora longing to remain rooted, and every African alive today who must rise, sit, and take their rightful place at the table of history. The empty chair is not absence; it is invitation.

In a symbolic act of permanence, the original canvas will not be sold. Ikalafeng has instead gifted it to the UNISA Art Gallery, ensuring the work lives where Africa’s future is being studied and shaped. At the largest university on the continent, Africa Re-Union will be preserved not as a commodity, but as a covenant — a manifesto for generations to come. Only 2063 signed limited reproductions will be made available to ensure the conversation goes far. The number is a reminder of the AU agenda 2063 for an integrated, peaceful and prosperous Africa.

“The Africa Re-Union is not a return to the 1884 Berlin Conference table, but the setting of our own table: equal, sovereign, and unapologetically African. It is both remembrance and declaration: Africa is whole again. This time, no one will define us but us,” says Thebe Ikalafeng, Conceptual Author and Chief Curator of the Africa Re-Union.

“For me, Africa Re-Union is about shifting the canvas of our imagination. It’s to challenge how we see ourselves and how the world sees us; not as fragmented, diminished, or peripheral, but as whole, central and sovereign. This work is both a mirror and a map, and reflects our past, but points us toward a future we must author ourselves,” says Mark Modimola, Visual Artist of the Africa Re-Union.

“Johannesburg has always been a city of convergence, where Africa meets the world. To host the Africa Re-Union at FNB Art Joburg affirms our city’s role as a crucible of ideas, creativity and cultural leadership. This is more than an artwork — it is a call to re-centre Africa in history and in the future,” said Vuyisile Mshudulu, Director of Arts, Culture and Heritage for the City of Johannesburg.

“Correcting the map is about more than geography. It’s about dignity. The way Africa is represented shapes how the world sees us, and how we see ourselves. The Africa Re-Union is a bold and creative way of reclaiming that story, insisting that Africa is seen in its true scale, power and possibility,” said Moky Makura, Executive Director of Africa No Filter.

The Africa Re-Union was unveiled at the 18th FNB Joburg Art Fair opening night, in a live performance led by celebrated actor Aubrey Poo and acclaimed poet Napo Mashiane, with costumes designed by award-winning wardrobe stylist, Sheli Masondo. The performance re-imagines the infamous 1884 Berlin Conference, but this time with African agency, voice, and vision at the table.

The Africa Re-Union, part of the broader Correct the Map campaign, a movement that challenges outdated cartography and calls for equal-area maps that restore Africa’s true size, scale and significance in the world launched in partnership with the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) and Africa No Filter, and supported by Brand South Africa, comes at a historic moment. At a time when Africa No Filter, Speak Up Africa and the African Union have called for the world to redress centuries of distorted representations of Africa’s size in global maps, and as the continent prepares to host its first-ever G20 Summit in 2025, the initiative is a milestone in Africa’s growing agency on the international stage.

The Africa Re-Union is a timely reminder that Africa’s voice, creativity and unity are central to creating a Better Africa for a Better World.

Libya: UN announces “truce committee” as ceasefire holds after violence clashes in Tripoli

Relative quiet has returned to Libya’s capital Tripoli, after violent clashes between rival militia groups caused chaos in the city last week.

Fighting erupted on 12 May following the killing of Abdel Ghani al-Kikli, the commander of the Stability Support Authority (SSA), one of the most powerful militias in the country.

Al-Kikli, also known as “Gheniwa”, had been accused of war crimes and human rights violations by Amnesty International. He was reportedly killed in a facility run by rival group 444 Brigade.

The clashes that ensued were some of Tripoli’s heaviest in years and killed at least 8 civilians, according to the United Nations.

The Libyan government announced a ceasefire on 14 May. In a statement on Sunday, the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said a “truce committee” had been established to protect civilians and ensure the permanence of the ceasefire.

Libya has known little stability since the 2011 uprising that plunged the country into civil war and resulted in the death of longtime autocrat Muammar Gaddafi

Eastern Libya is run by a Tobruk-based government under the de facto leadership of military chief Khalifa Haftar, who commands the Libyan National Army.

Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah leads the Government of National Unity which controls the west of the country and has been recognised by the UN Security Council since 2021.

Disagreements between rival factions have prevented the organisation of elections, and Dbeibah has remained in power since then.

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Tripoli on 16 May to demand the removal of Dbeibah and his government, and to call for elections.

Demonstrators have accused Dbeibah of failing to restore stability and of being complicit in the growing power of armed groups. At least three ministers resigned following these calls.

Prime Minister Dbeibah has since promised to eliminate militias and corruption in the country.

“We will not spare anyone who continues to engage in corruption or extortion. Our goal is to create a Libya free of militias and corruption”, he said in a televised speech on Saturday.

TWO WRONGS NEVER MAKE ONE RIGHT; TIME FOR THE WESTERN WORLD TO ACCEPT WRONG DOING AND CORRECT IT NOW, ELSE AFRICA IS NO LONGER A MILKING COW

The UN, EU, USA, UK, France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Holland and Italy must become humane enough to accept the wrongs of their founding fathers against the continent of Africa and start paying compensation, reparations for the damage of Slave Trade, scramble, partition, Colonization and micky mouse freedom they adopted in Africa.

Killing our leaders the way they did with Patrice Lumumba, Thomas Sankala, Muammar Gaddafi, Samora Machel and deposition of Kwame Nkrumah and other African leaders will not hold water in this age and era.

Africa is not ready to be bullied, antagonized, oppressed and manipulated no more.

The birth of SAS [Alliance of the Sahel States] and the breaking away from the puppets of the west ECOWAS, EAC, SADC and Maghreb is one step Africa is breaking the chains of Neo-colonialism.

The Alliance of triangular states of Burkina Faso 🇧🇫, Niger 🇳🇪 and Mali 🇲🇱 is the second step of a “board roaring voice” warning the Western World that “Enough is Enough, we can’t be starved, enslaved and impoverished on a planet where the resources that ignites and energize Global economy are from our continent.

To be born Black or Brown is not a curse neither is it Rottenness.

We are humans, blood not water or oil is running into our veins.

Noone knows God to be Black, Brown, White or Pink therefore no Earthly being has monopoly over another.

It’s over 500 years when Africa became or was made a domestic worker of the Western World through physical killings, massacre, genocide, oppression and Apartheid.

Many Western World citizens have moved into Africa through force or legal and become citizens.

The 500 years of mistakes and wrongs can be solved only when and if the wrongs committed are paid for and stopped.

Global economic tilting and bent economic policies calculated to continue policing, manipulating and dictating Africa must stop.

Africa has abundant resources in oil, gas, rutile, gold, diamonds, ruby, coal, uranium, zinc, manganese, cobalt, lithium, platinum, niobium, palladium, chrome, sapphire, monazite, titanium, graphite, gypsum, bauxite, nickel, tanzanite, rare earth, copper, kaolinic clay, strontinite, colombo tantalite, quarts and many others.

These mineral resources have been shipped outside Africa and built or decorated development in Europe and America leaving Africans poor and diseased.

Any attempt to question the legality and moral compass of these exploitation have been met with mysterious deaths, coups and overthrowing of the questioning personalities or governments.

For centuries the Western World has profited and benefitted at the expense of vulnerable Africans.

No Western World figure rose to quizz one another the evil behind these atrocities and harm to the continent of 1.4 billion souls failing to live a stable and manageable lives.

While the occupiers, oppressors and exploiters enjoy the fruits of our resources living at over US$1000 per day the owners of the resources [Africans live on less than a dollar per day].

The UN, EU and their masked groups AU, ECOWAS, EAC, SADC and Maghreb enjoys the middle men while cashing on in Jamborees parties where torch-bearers are enticed to steal and keep their exploits in foreign western banks.

When they die all the monetary benefits remains in the Western World as oppressors “Trust funds” which are borrowed to African governments on a harsh and inhumane strings attached through World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

Governments have changed hands in Europe and America, no leadership in the new generation want to do away with the oppressive order of their ancestors.

It is clear, this is a way Europe and America light up their cities and build their economy, that’s why Africa will never taste justice.

The heinous crimes of genocide by the German colonizers have not been accepted, apologized or reparated and compensated in Namibia.

The heinous crimes of the Mau Mau by the British in Kenya have not be reparated or compensated.

The brutality of the British and Dutch in South Africa by Apartheid has not been compensated or paid for.

The killings of freedom fighters of Africa by the colonizers across the continent don’t matter in the eyes of the occupiers and colonizers.

When the fight intensifies they call for cease-fire and create a table for dialogue where they outrightly deny to be accountable to the atrocities committed.

When they hand over political power they authorise governments of Africa to misuse and vandalize taxes of citizens and steal from them but keep control of the vast land of Africa and resources.

UN always calculatively side-step the cry of Africa and choose to put under the carpet the issue of African justice.

Africa has tried to speak out for economic, land and resources justice but no European and American in their infinite intelligence found it WRONG for everything they have done for Africa.

It does not matter which leader, Republican, Democratic, Tea, Conservative and Labour government their mission is one…Exploit African resources and divide them.

Africa after realizing justice will never be found on the “table of dialogue” or “table of morality” has embarked on a tough journey of true sovereignty and true independence.

Captain Ibrahim Traore, Soldier Tchiani and Colonel Assimi Goita have emerged to fight a “just Africa” where Africans must be able to control their own destiny, choose their future and pave her own way of doing things.

Unbelievably UN, EU and western governments are still living like their ancestors wanting to block and stop the “Emancipation of African people” by African thinkers.

Instead of appreciating and turning the page in agreement that time for African true freedom has come they come and say “NO”.

Yet America and Europe promote self determination and freedoms of human beings.

They are even fighting for the freedoms and rights of animalssuch as dogs and wildlife but they vehemently don’t want to see Africa totally free from it’s social and economic hardships created by them.

Africa has opened eyes that the west is not after African self determination but African oppression because the rat is now of the basket.

The rhetoric we were made to believe that American and European elitism were their own making has been exposed, “without cheap and easily exploited Africa resources” America and Europe will not be what we know of it…will collapse in both social and economic blue-prints.

Why not just come into the open and begin to do open transactions, buy our resources fairly for us to develop and feed our people too???

America and Europe have just exposed themselves of arrogance, monopoly and domination…they are people who know no justice, they are of no moral values and their language is “Take it by force”.

The treatment of America and Europe over the three leaders of Burkina Faso 🇧🇫, Mali 🇲🇱 and Niger 🇳🇪 have truthfully and clearly show the type of heart these western powers have against Africa.

This has opened eyes of many if not the entire Africa realizing that the west has no good will for Africa, the west don’t love African people and they do not want to see Africa free from their chains.

This greed has pushed Africans to come together and fight the enemy they have just found hiding in the 🐑 Sheep’s skin opening eyes that Africa’s enemy is not within but from without “The West”.

The planned continental protest being organized by the youth of Africa calling on America and Europe to leave Captain Ibrahim Traore alone is an eye-opener to the continent identifying who the wolf 🐺 or fox that prey on Africa is.

All the sweet-talk about aid, development funds, Europe-Africa summit, America-Africa summit are and have been just smokescreen hiding the true cruel identity of the West against Africa and African people.

They created borders in Africa and are calling Africans crossing into America and Europe “illegal immigrants” and call themselves “Tourists” when they visit Africa.

They dictate African governments to impose 90 day or 30 day visa for African people within Africa but receive preferential 6 months if not 12 months visa to come into Africa.

No wonder we have observed or seen no any American or European deported from Africa even if he or she overstay in Africa.

Doing exactly the opposite when it comes to an African in one of the African states or in America and Europe….What hypocrisy of the highest order?

When Ibrahim Traore and his colleagues in Mali and Niger nationalize their countries resources they come and paint bad names to them, they are called the “most wanted criminals” liable for arrest because they are a dictators.

Who is a dictator between the West that steal resources and impose punitive laws over its financial support to Africa that starves and impoverishes Africans and Ibrahim Traore who has given his people control of their resources where production of goods, manufacturing and refinery of gold is taking place in their own land???

Do not waste time thinking hegemony will win this time around, just come forward and accept the wrongs instead of creating more.

“Two wrongs never make one right”.

Accept wrong doing and pay compensation together with reparations and allow Africa to own her resources and land where you can trade fairly for the good of all people in Africa, America and Europe.

Else! Africa is ready to push for her recognition and fight to own and control what is rightfully it’s own.

The time for a tilted World is over, this is the moment for a balanced world.

From the 30th April 2025 Africa is declaring it’s sovereign independence and self determination.

You must know that the youth of Africa control 70% of the continental population, their say will surpass and consume the few puppet leaders and governments that you think will be used as your enclave for continued oppression and exploitation.

The few individuals in Africa that you are banking on will not outlast the “just cause” of African self determination and total freedom.

Piece of advice! Join Africa and let us all make planet Earth 🌏 a better world.

Besides, the World has potential resources that can end hunger, poverty and impoverishment.

Why being so greed and heartless???

This Revolution is unstoppable and it is inevitable.

No amount of propaganda, weaponry, sabotage or espionage will subvert this Revolution.

Killing Ibrahim Traore will breed million more Ibrahim Traores just like you failed to kill Thomas Sankala’s idea and dream, will just worsen the already volatile temperament of Africans.

The seeds of Isidiore Thomas Sankala have 🌸 blossomed into Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and are flowing across the continent.

This Revolution is supported posthumously by Patrice Lumumba, Kwame Nkrumah, Mohammad Al Khadafi, Sekou Toure, Isidiore Thomas Sankala, Nelson Mandela, Mangaliso Robert Sobukwe, Modibo Keita, Kambarage Julius Nyerere, Bob Robert Gabriel Mugabe, Oliver Tambo, Cabral Gamal, Samora Machel, Yatuta Chisiza, Orton Chirwa, Emperor Haile Sellassie the 1st and the bloodline, Queen Shebba, Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, Seretse Khama, Joshua Nkomo, Eduardo Mondlane, Augustino Neto, Ahmed Ben Bella, Gamal Abdel Nasser and today nationalists like Thabo Mbeki, John Kuoffur, Abdoulaye Wade, Ahmed Bouteflika, Diamaye Faye, Ousiman Sonko, Nandi Ndaitwa, Julius Sello Malema, Paul Kagame, Ian Khama, Duma Boko, Draman Mahama and countless list.

The fighters are many and cannot or will not be conquered.

The best solution for global peace accept and join the path of TRUTH.

America and Europe have accumulated or made billions from African resources and human capital, its either you share or we remain alone controlling and managing our remaining resources.

Always the book of “Psychology Stupidity” says:- Realizing that you are wrong and accept your faults and mistakes signals the beginning of morality.

Education will never end.

They will create the virus, pretend and sell the antidotes – Muammar Gaddafi

Gaddafi
Gaddafi

Richard Kwame Krah

The advent of the coronavirus has seen a lot of blame-games between the United States of America and China. The Chinese are blaming America for the spread of the virus. The spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, Zhao Lijian, tweeted that “it might be the US army” that brought the coronavirus to China whilst Donald Trump, President of the United States also constantly refer to COVID-19 as a “Chinese Virus”.

In the wake of this back and forth, EYEGAMBIA’s research team came across a very strong assertion made by Muammar Mohammed Abu Minyar Gaddafi, a former Revolutionary Libyan President and Pan-Africanist.

In a speech delivered during his prime years of leadership, Gaddafi asserted that there are people who specialize in creating health problems just to make money, irrespective of the danger it poses to human existence.

According to him, “they will create the virus themselves and they will sell the antidotes afterwards, pretending to take their time to find the solution when they already have it.”

This moment of COVID-19 the pandemic spreading across and killing many people coupled with the emerging accusations is the right time to start a conversation on these thoughts of Gaddafi, especially when the virus has started spreading in Africa.

Colonel Gaddafi has always been that leader who finds it very difficult to believe in the truthfulness of a people who once decided to share and evade the territories of Africa, loot resources to build their nation and brutalize its people in addition.

Known to be very protective of the African culture, a promoter of African unity and a strong critic of foreign ideologies and the manner and strategies with which the powers manipulate the world, He has never held back on his words when speaking against social ills. Many of the things Gaddafi use to be critical about in the past, most of which were ignored seem to be manifesting today.

Gaddafi may be far gone but his thoughts are still relevant today. What do you make of his view?
