Chakwera cherishes Lowershire Paramount Chief Lundu

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera has completed a tour of duty, which he commenced soon after his arrival from China.

Speaking to journalists at Mbewe Headquarters in Chikwawa Home of Paramount Chief Lundu,  where he went to pay a courtesy call, Chakwera described the Lowershire tour as successful.

The president said he has been able to witness progress in the development activities taking place in the region.

Chakwera hailed people in the region for the worm welcome, which they accorded to the first couple.

Chakwera was happy with the overwhelming response, having visited various developmental projects.

“But I think the highlight has been the fact that for the first time in over four decades, we received fuel through the Beira Corridor, and that is a significant milestone in terms of our developmental agenda, because we want more jobs, creation of wealth, as well as food security, these things cannot happen without the enablement of such things like we have in energy and fuel that fuels that productivity,” he said.

The president said apart from receiving the fuel , he was also able to visit a number of other projects, some completed, others on the way to completion by the end of the year, particularly the major irrigation project, the Shire Valley  Transformation program.

He said if the infrastructure is indeed done by this year, then next year, production can start.

The president said he is committed to production.

He said this valley will never be the same and will impact Malawi to become a productive society, not just a consumptive one.

While in Lowershire , the president ordered Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) to re- open all its depots and flood them with maize so that people, especially elders and children do not die with hunger.

Malawi’s Southern region chiefs rebel against DPP on ConCourt judges

Paramount Chief Lundu

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi President Peter Mutharika’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) had a rude awakening on Sunday, May 3, 2020 after Chiefs in the Southern Region led by Paramount Chief Lundu openly refused the hold a press conference to aimed at dressing down the five Constitutional Court Judges.

The botched presser was scheduled for 2 PM on Sunday, May 3, 2020 at Chilembwe Lodge in Blantyre.

Apart from Lundu, the briefing that never was, could have Paramount Kawinga, Senior Chiefs Kapeni, Chapananga, Malemia and Traditional Authority Nthache from Mwanza.

According to our investigations, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), Zodiak, Mibawa and Times were some of the media coverage that sent their newsmen and women to cover the briefing.

Further investigations reveals that all the Chiefs were invited by Paramount Lundu who was not then not sure of the contents of the press statement from the party.

“The media arrived and set up their gadgets ready for the major story from the Chiefs who were meeting in the other room at the same venue but things changed after Lundu fished out the statement” said the source.

“ After going through the document, one by one the Chiefs started excusing themselves not to participate. They feared the contents were a clear example of contempt of court, demeaning and an insult to the judiciary in Malawi” he said.

After a unanimous decision the Chiefs asked Senior Chief Kapeni to let go the media on the pretext that they were waiting for their counterparts from the Northern Region who had a problem with the vehicle they were traveling in.

The document that was addressed to Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda was the climax of DPP war against the judiciary in Malawi.

According to the copy we have seen, DPP wanted the Chiefs to echo the petition which DPP Henry Mussa read out during their Blantyre demonstrations.

Some of the issues in the botched statement, DPP accuses the ConCourt Judges of favoring the petitioners due to United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Saulosi Chilima’s wife Mary for allegedly being related to Judge Sunduzyo Madise, and it alleges Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera is connected to Redson Kapindu.

The statements further alleges that the judges erred in reinstatement of the Vice President Saulosi Chilima.

According to DPP the post of the vice president should have been left alone or else should have been with Everton Chimulirenji not Chilima.

The statement also faulted the ConCourt on the 50+1 alleging it was not part of the petitioners case.

In conclusion the statement ends; “Chiefs of this country together with our subordinates would like to humbly request your office as the head of Judiciary to always remind the judges and the magistrates to always stand by the truth, and impartiality when presiding over cases in our courts. If they do so Malawi will continue to remain united other wise our court risk losing trust and glory it used to have.

Malawi’s Chewa chiefs turn against Gawa Undi; Elect Cheif Lundu as patron

Chief Lundu

DOWA-(MaraviPost)-The country’s break-away grouping from the Chewa Cultural Heritage over the weekend elected paramount chief Lundu as its patron.

The grouping argues that it does not recognize Kalonga Gawa Undi as its leader in Malawi.

According to Zodiak radio, the splinter grouping, Bwalo la Achewa met on Saturday in Dowa where they also elected senior chief Kalonga as deputy to the controversial and politically biased Lundu.

Chief Kaomba was elected director of chiefs.

But chief Lukwa of Kasungu has described the grouping as illegal, saying all Chewas in Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi are under their king, the Zambia-based Gawa Undi.

Lundu said he has been elected the leader of all Chewas in Malawi because he is the head of the tribe the whole country.

According to sources say Lundu, a confessed Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) sympathizer has sought money to cause confusion in the Chewa tribe after noting that most chewa traditional leaders rally behind the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and United Transformation Movement (UTM) parties.

“Kalonga Gawa Undi has no powers in Malawi,” said Lundu after his election.

Kaomba also is seen as a mere fortune seeker and seizes any opportunity to make money.

Malawians chide President Mutharika on Chief Lundu appointment as MBTS’s board chair

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)Malawians have reacted angrily to the appointment of Paramount Chief Lundu as Chairperson of Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) Board, Maravi Post has learnt.

Lundu was appointed as MBTS board chairperson on Wednesday according to a press statement signed by Chief Secretary to the Government Lloyd Muhara.

According to some Malawians including Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Health, Juliana Lunguzi as well as Human rights activist Billy Mayaya, the move only aims at rewarding the chief for being loyal to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

They argued that the position needs someone with full knowledge saying MBTS is technical institution.

“The President would have looked at the technical expertise of Paramount Chief Lundu before the appointment,” Lunguzi said.

According to Lunguzi, politically connected appointments have resulted in the country having under-performing institutions since they lack proper leadership.

“You can agree with me that, oftentimes, such appointments have brought various challenges to our statutory corporations don’t perform very well simply because we just put those who can endorse without questioning the processes that have to be followed,” she said.

Human rights activist Billy Mayaya said; “As civil society, we feel the role of chiefs is being undermined with such political appointments. The primary mandate of chiefs is to ensure that their subjects are being taken care of, in terms of social services. The appointment of Lundu is a sign that he is being rewarded for the negative opinions he was holding against members of the opposition.”

Chancellor College political commentator, Ernest Thindwa, has said the appointment is one of the methods the DPP is using to gain votes in the Shire Valley where the main opposition Malawi Congress Party is making inroads.

“I don’t think there is any chief today who can say he can influence the way people vote. So, the DPP should rethink its strategy. That is why most of these bodies are not performing [well],” he said.

However, government spokesperson, Nicholas Dausi, defended the appointment.

“I think that is a very wrong conclusion. The question of technicalities does not arise because this institution has technical officers on the ground who do their work to their level best,” he said.

Lundu was among the chiefs who petitioned Speaker of Parliament and the Office of the President (OPC) against Electoral Reforms (Amendment) Bills late last year.

Can Bushiri make a good President for Malawi?

Prophet Bushiri

By Nophi Phumisa

These are not rumours. Weeks ago, a local chief in Malawi, Paramount Chief Lundu, made a strong case, publicly, connecting Prophet Shepherd Bushiri to mainstream politics.

At a ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) political rally in his area, Lundu publicly announced he has banned Prophet Bushiri’s churches in his area, saying Bushiri has ‘political interests’—whatever that means.

Weeks later, leader of newly formed Democratic Progressive Party (Depeco), Chris Daza, publicly told a media briefing in Lilongwe, Malawi, that he has written Prophet Bushiri, asking him to join his party. Continue reading Can Bushiri make a good President for Malawi?

Richard Msowoya: Malawi speaker

This past week, three incidents unfolded in our national space that threatened our basic right to human freedoms. They must be challenged, questioned and all misty areas be removed. The first is the statement by the esteemed Speaker of Parliament, Honorable Richard Msowoya, who said at a ceremony on free speech, that Malawi must embrace free speech with caution. The Free Expression Institute hosted the ceremony.

The second, was an affront to our right to freedom of conscience, which includes the right to practice our religious believe. This involves the Paramount Chief Lundu barring Prophet Shepherd Bushiri from building a church in Chikwawa district. The Chief went as far as labeling the man of God as a Satanist. Chief Lundu under fire for attacking Prophet Bushiri church; asked to respect freedom of religion

chief lundu

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Paramount Chief Lundu of Chikwawa, is under fire for ordering that Prophet Bushiri Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Church, should stop its operation in the Lower Shire district of Chikwawa. The Paramount claims that the worship promotes Satanism, and that Prophet Bushiri has political ambitions.

Chief Lunda over the weekend attacked ECG during the political rally governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) held at Nchalo in the district.

Lundu told the rally that Bushiri pretends to be a Good Samaritan by distributing maize, while advancing his political ambitions.

The Chief therefore declared that he would not allow the evangelist to build his Church in the Lower Shire; he claimed that the earmarked site was already designated for a Government hospital.

The attack did not please the Church, which through a press statement issued on Monday disputed Lundu’s claims.

ECG Communications Director, Ephraim Nyondo, described Lundu’s allegation as character assassination and which must not be entertained.

Nyondo underlined that ECG will not tolerate such provocations and called on the Chief to quickly return to his normalcy so that he appreciates the gravity of his remarks.

The publicist emphasized that as long as Malawi remains a Republic, not a kingdom, the ECG churches will, legally, continue to operate anywhere in Malawi.

“We, therefore, want to make it clear to Lundu, and everybody who shares his thinking, that Malawi, including the area he (Lundu) operates, is a Republic, not a kingdom.

“We also call on Malawians of goodwill, to speak out against any elements in the country that think they are above the laws of the country. We all have a duty to safeguard the democracy,” said Nyondo.

However, DPP spokesperson Francis Kasaila distanced the Party from Lundu’s remark. He argues that the DPP-led Government is in good terms with all churches in Malawi.

Kasaila said the country’s Constitution provides for the freedom of worship and the DPP-Administration, will do all it takes to ensure that every Malawi freely exercises that freedom.

Some civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and human rights defenders also condemned Lundu’s remarks and said the country’s Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, movement and domicile. They said this guarantee is enshrined in the Bill of Rights of the Constitution.

They said no Chief has the power to act unilaterally with a dictatorial manner over the operations of a church or any institution for the matter.
