Malawi’s High Court adjourns land case involving DPP’s Vuwa, Mchacha; pleads not guilty

Lloyd Muhara: Former Secretary to government

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—The High Court in Lilongwe has adjourned the land case involving politicians Simon Vuwa Kaunda, Charles Mchacha and former secretary to the government, Lloyd Muhara, to a later date after the trio pleaded guilty.

During the plea taking on Thursday, the court made a number of rulings on objections raised by the defence.

One of the objections was that the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) cannot represent the State on counts that fall under the Penal Code.

Judge Annabel Mtalimanja has however ruled that ACB can be involved in the Penal Code counts, given that the Director of Public Prosecutions has given a consent.

The three are answering multiple charges connected to an alleged illegal purchase of a piece of land by Mchacha, belonging to the Department of Forestry at Kanjedza in Blantyre.

This happened when both Mchacha and Kaunda were cabinet ministers during the Democratic Progressive Party regime.

The case also involves secretary to Ministry of Defence, Bright Kumwembe.

Malawi Congress Party members defect to DPP in Nkhata Bay

MCP members defect to governing DPP in Nkhata Bay

Over 64 members of the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in Nkhata Bay District have defected to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) ahead of the forthcoming fresh presidential election.

DPP’s director of Logistics Symon Vuwa Kaunda, who is also a legislator for Nkhata Bay Central Constituency, welcomed the new members at a rally at Tukombo trading centre.

Vuwa said “DPP’s open door policy remains intact.”

He added:” It’s never too late to join the DPP.”

Kaunda, who is Minister of Tourism, said President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika had undertaken key development projects that had changed the face of the district, such as the Mzuzu- Nkhata Bsy road, the new district hospital, technical college and modern markets.

“President Mutharika will continue to develop the district and vote for the DPP-UDF alliance,” he said.

The Mzuzu-Nkhata Bay road is widely praised as the best road in the country.

DPP tightens its grip in Malawi’s North

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-In a bid to hold on to its stronghold on the ground, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has embarked on conducting development rallies across the country.

Speaking on Sunday at Kachere Primary School Grounds in Nkhata Bay, Member of Parliament (MP) for Nkhata Bay Central Constituency, Simon Vuwa Kaunda, said as a ruling party, they organised the rally to thank the people of Nkhata Bay and the Northern Region for entrusting DPP again with leadership.

” Firstly, we decided to conduct this rally to thank the people here for voting again for DPP. Secondly, we also came to announce to the people the development package that the President, Professor Arthur Peter Muthalika, plans to implement here in the North,” Kaunda said.

Kaunda, who is also the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, reiterated that the government will implement Nkhata Bay Water Project, build secondary schools in every constituency and a better road network in the Northern Region.

Concurring with Vuwa Kaunda, was Minister of Health and Population, Honouble Jappie Mhango, who was the Guest of Honour at the rally. Mhango said the government has left aside K8 billion meant to develop women and the youths in the country through micro loans.

“The DPP Government has a lot of development agenda to implement, not only here in the North but across the country. More developments such as human empowerment, water projects, hunger alleviation and road network, will be implemented all over Malawi,” said the Minister.

When Senior Chief Fukamapiri, in whose area the rally took place, asked the Minister to rehabilitate a health centre in the area, Mhango quickly said that the government will renovate not only the said hospital, but also all the other health facilities in the country.

Among other notable members at the rally was Ken Sanga who is DPP Regional Governor for the North.

DPP continues to rule the country after winning the 21 May watershed tripartite elections. Its electoral victory is still challenged by UTM and MCP leaders who allege that the polls were rigged.

The Constitutional Court has just completed hearing of the controversial case and it is yet to pass its verdict
