LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In a captivating dialogue that addressed the most pressing challenges facing Malawi’s youth, United Democratic Front (UDF) Presidential candidate Atupele Austin Muluzi made bold commitments to transform the lives of young Malawians during the Presidential Youth Dialogue at the Bingu International Convention Centre.
Speaking to moderator Cynthia Zonde Zulu before an audience of 100 carefully selected youth leaders and millions watching across radio, television, and digital platforms, Muluzi demonstrated why he positions himself as the solution-oriented presidential candidate the country needs.
The dialogue, organized by Youth and Society (YAS) in collaboration with Zodiak Broadcasting Cooperation under the Youth Decide Campaign, provided a rare opportunity for direct engagement between a presidential hopeful and the demographic that represents over 60% of Malawi’s population.
Confronting Hard Truths
Muluzi began by acknowledging the harsh realities facing young Malawians, refusing to sugarcoat the challenges. “I know many of you are frustrated. And you have every right to be,” he told the engaged audience.
“You’ve graduated from university only to find there are no jobs waiting for you. You’ve watched your friends leave for South Africa, Botswana, or overseas because they’ve lost hope in Malawi.”
The UDF leader painted a stark picture of the economic crisis, noting that “50.7% of Malawians live below the poverty line, and that number could hit 80% by the end of this year if we don’t act decisively.” However, rather than dwelling on problems, Muluzi pivoted to concrete solutions.
The Business First Revolution
Central to Muluzi’s youth empowerment strategy is his “Business First Plan,” which he described as a fundamental shift from aid dependency to wealth creation. One of his most striking proposals was the “30-Day Rule for licensing,” which he explained would automatically approve business licenses if the government cannot process them within 30 days. “No more bureaucratic delays killing your entrepreneurial dreams,” he declared, drawing enthusiastic applause.
Technology and Innovation Focus
Recognizing the digital-native generation before him, Muluzi outlined an ambitious technology agenda. He encouraged the young leaders in the room to hone in and embrace their tech-savvy nature to build a better Malawi. He highlighted that this is why his manifesto is titled: Innovate Malawi, to capture this exact sentiment.
A Binding Commitment
The highlight of the event was Muluzi’s signing of the 2025-2030 National Youth Manifesto, which he described as “a legal and moral commitment that will guide every decision I make as your President.” This gesture transformed the dialogue from a typical campaign event into a binding social contract.
“Your manifesto becomes MY manifesto. Your priorities become MY priorities,” Muluzi emphasized, distinguishing himself from politicians who make empty promises.
Solution-Oriented Leadership
Throughout the conversation with Ms. Zonde Zulu, Muluzi consistently demonstrated his solution-oriented approach to governance. When addressing corruption – identified by many youth as a barrier to opportunities – he promised “zero tolerance from Day One” with immediate prosecution of corrupt officials and repatriation of stolen funds.
The Presidential Youth Dialogue reinforced Muluzi’s positioning as the candidate who not only understands youth challenges but has concrete, actionable plans to address them.
As Malawi approaches the September 16th elections, the event demonstrated the power of issue-based political discourse in amplifying youth voices and strengthening democratic participation.
Teresa Chirwa-Ndanga, Chairperson of the Presidential Youth Debate Organizing Committee, noted that the dialogue successfully achieved its goal of promoting “open and accountable leadership” while providing presidential candidates a platform to speak directly to Malawi’s most influential demographic group.
