Yokohama, August 28, 2019: Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has said it would continue having dialogue with Malawi government on the Chileka Airport and Mtayamoyo Bridge among other projects the country is seeking support for.

JICA Executive Senior Vice President, Kazuhiko Koshikawa, said this in an interview on Wednesday in Yokohama, Japan, after he held a side meeting with Malawi’s Vice President, Everton Chimulirenji, at the 2019 Tokyo International Conference on Africa Development (TICAD7).

He described his meeting with the Vice President as fruitful and that the Malawi government had asked for the Japanese government’s support on a number of projects including the Chileka Airport and Mtayamoyo Bridge.

“JICA is committed to continuing supporting Malawi and on the projects we will continue our dialogue with the Malawi government to see how best we can work together in implementing the projects,” Koshikawa pointed out.

He pointed out that Malawi as being among key countries in Africa that JICA is working with in a number of areas including education, infrastructure and power.

The JICA Executive Senior Vice President added that Malawi as number one country in Africa that has absorbed and worked with more young Japanese volunteers over the years.

“Malawi is a very close country for JICA and for the Japanese people,” he said.

Official information sourced from JICA indicates that accumulatively, Malawi has worked with 1,874 young Japanese volunteers up to date and that, currently, 44 young Japanese volunteers are working in Malawi.

Malawi Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Francis Kasaila, who was among the Malawi government officials who accompanied the Vice President, hailed JICA for responding to the proposals Malawi government made during the meeting.

He said government would continue its engagement with JICA in various areas including human capacity development, trade, science and technology, which the Minister noted that Japanese have expertise in.

Other infrastructural projects that Malawi government is pushing for support from the Japanese government include the expansion of the road from Mchinji Round About in Lilongwe to Malawi Police Service’s C Company uptown to dual carriage and upgrading of Domasi Teacher’s Training College.

The Vice President is scheduled to have a number of side meetings during the TICAD7 which has brought together leaders of African countries or their representatives, African countries’ government officials, international organizations and investors at Pacifico Yokohama, the venue for the conference.

Vice President and Minister responsible for Disaster Management Affairs, Everton Chimulirenji made the commitment on Monday (5th August 2019) when he visited Mulanje District to appreciate recovery interventions funded by the World Bank under the Malawi Flood Emergency Recovery Project (MFERP).

Chimulirenji, who visited Nogwe Dyke and the new Thuchila Health Centre constructed under MFERP, assured the general public that government, in collaboration with various stakeholders, will employ all necessary measures to ensure that damaged structures are reconstructed.

“Government will reconstruct damaged infrastructure such as schools, hospitals and roads. Let me assure you that we will not forsake you,” said Chimulirenji, who also commended World Bank for implementing various Disaster Risk Management (DRM) programmes in the country.

World Bank Senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist, Frank Nkoka called upon government to allocate more resources to propel the implementation of various DRM programmes that benefit the less privileged.

Nkoka added that there is need for all stakeholders, including communities, politicians and the clergy, to join hands in implementing recovery interventions to ensure that the country reconstruct durable and better infrastructure following the March 2019 floods.

Secretary to the Vice President and Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, Wilson Moleni said the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) appreciates the role donor and humanitarian partners such as the World Bank play in implementing DRM programmes in the country.

During the visit, government, through DoDMA, provided 1200 bags of rice (each weighing 50kg) to people affected by the March 2019 floods.

Maputo, June 20: Malawi’s Vice- President, Everton Chimulirenji has described the 12th US-Africa Business Summit held in Maputo, Mozambique as fruitful for Malawi.

He made the remarks on Wednesday during a Press briefing at Polana Serena Hotel in the Mozambican capital Maputo at the end of the summit.

The four-day event was jointly hosted by Mozambique and Corporate Council on Africa (CCA). CCA is a Washington-based business association that promotes business and investment opportunities between the US and Africa.

More than 1 000 high-level business executives were in attendance.

“The summit has been fruitful to Malawi and Africa as a whole, Malawi is pleased to be involved in the Africa Free Trade Area agreement and as a country, we are doing something before ratifying the agreement.

“Although, we have American investors in Malawi, we would like to have more,” said Chimulirenji.

He said Malawi is expected to benefit a lot since the United States has indicated it is willing to invest in African countries including Malawi.

While in Maputo, the Right Honourable Chimulirenji participated in a panel discussion and had a courtesy call by the Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi.

“We had a fruitful meeting with President Nyusi and he is willing to continue working hand in hand with the Malawi Government,” said Chimulirenji.

The summit provided participants with the opportunity to scout for investments in multiple sectors such as agribusiness, energy, health, infrastructure, ICT and Finance among others.

In addition to providing the opportunity to network with key private sector and government decision-makers, the summit provided a platform to advocate for effective US trade and investment policies.

African countries that attended the summit which was opened by the Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi included the Kingdom of Eswatini, Republic of Rwanda, Republic of Namibia and Republic of Zambia.

Others were Uganda, Zimbabwe, the Kingdom of Lesotho and Equatorial Guinea.
