2 Min Read

A delegation of seventeen investors from the United Kingdom (UK) will be visiting Malawi from the 31st August to the 4th of September 2015 to explore investment opportunities that are available in the country. The visit is a follow up to the meetings which the investors had with Malawi’s Minister of Industry and Trade during his visit to London.

Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC) Chief Executive Officer, Clement Kumbemba, said that a Malawian delegation led by the Minister of Industry and Trade visited UK in July 2015, and held bilateral investment meeting with various investors.

“The visit by the Malawian delegation was a pre-conference exercise ahead of the Global African Investment Summit which is to be held on 1st and 2nd December, 2015 and Malawi’s president is expected to attend”, explained Kumbemba.

The meeting has been of paramount significance because government of Malawi met with twenty-five companies which are interested in a number of sectors. For instance, a construction company called Dawnus is interested to finance and construct infrastructure projects, to a value of US$80 million. Whereas Aggreko Company that specializes in the provision of off-grid interim supply of electricity from either gas or diesel. It has big investments in Mozambique with capacity of 350 megawatt from gas, in South Africa, Ghana and many countries globally and other companies.

He expressed optimism that out of the 25 companies who met with the Minister, 17 delegates from 10 companies will be in the country from 31st August to 4th September 2015 in the areas of Agriculture, Tourism, Mining Finance and more others . This indicates that Malawi has a chance to boost the economy through the potential investors.

However, admitting the economy hardship the country is passing through, Kumbemba said an iron curtain has been put across to separate people from poverty through investment.

“There have been some positive developments, the Vice president of Zhuhai Hengqin Zhongram Investment and Development Limited visited the country and MITC is incorporating their company in Malawi for establishment of 5-star hotel in Lilongwe where more people will get jobs,” he lamented.
