Malawi court in Dowa slaps mother to 9 months in jail for aiding daughter to prostitutionDOWA (MaraviPost)—In Mponera township in Malawi’s central district of Dowa, aiding a daughter to earn a living on prostitution has landed a 45-year old woman into nine months in jail with hard labour. Mponera First Grade Magistrate Court found guilty Tendeuli Magombo for exposing children to harmful practice and living on earnings of prostitution.Isaac Kadawayula, Mponera Police Prosecutor told The Maravi Post that the court recently heard that the convict was keeping two girls under the age of 16.

One of the victims happened to be the convict’s daughter who was used to earn money by selling their bodies at Mponera Trading Centre.

According Prosecutor Kadawayula the two girls were giving the proceeds to the mother as earning a living on prostitution.

Kadawayula explain further that the convict who is the first offender and a mother of six children, the court found her guilt as she failed to protect the girls but encourage them to engage in prostitution.

“Although Magombo pleaded with the court for a lenient sentence, First Grade Magistrate Beatrice Ng’oma found the convict’s conduct as an unprecedented. The two girls were exposed to cruelty, sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies.

“In her ruling Magistrate Ng’oma said the convict behavior was bound to spoil future leaders and mothers hence the need for Magombo to be eliminated from the society to protect the children,” explained Kadawayula.

Magombo hails from Chidothi Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Mponera in the central district of Dowa.
