Heavy flooding has affected residents from two group village headmen in the area of Traditional Authority Tengani in Nsanje. According to Assistant District Disaster Risk Management Officer for Nsanje Hamfrey Magalasi the affected house holds require assistance of basic household items and food stuffs.
In January 2012, the southern part of Malawi was hit by incessant rains, causing massive floods in the lowlands.
2,500 houses and 14,503 hectares of crop field were damaged and people were forced to leave their homes and seek temporary refuge in camp sites.
Furthermore, water and sanitation facilities were severely damaged, and the risk of water borne diseases increased significantly.
Following the floods of 2012 survivors of the floods witnessed the horrific scenes of their houses, livestock, household items and gardens being swept away at the end of January. What followed were cholera outbreaks, so hopefully officials are also planning for the prevention of a repeat of the same.
