LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Member of Parliament (MP) for Dedza South Ishmael Onani admitted that the August house failed the nation regardless of Metrological department warnings on cyclones.

The legislator made the observation prior to President Lazarus Chakwera’s report presentation in Parliament, Wednesday, March 22, 2024 on Tropical Cyclone Freddy assessment.

Onani indicated that parliamentarians were supposed to be the first to make the communication to their communities.

He said members were busy with other business whilst the Metrological department warned the nation about the Cyclone Freddy for preparedness.

Onani unhappy with Parliament action on early warning on cyclones

Onani observes further that settlement and land use planning must be looked into seriously to avoid recurrence of disasters.

“We need to see to it that disaster management is localized through empowering local councils and it’s high time Department of Disaster and Management Affairs (DoDMA) should fully decentralize it’s operations,” said Onani.

He therefore called upon state agencies to deliver on responses and recovery programmes for displaced people for rebuilding.
