A solemn memorial service for the late Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others who perished in a plane crash on June 10 of this year is currently taking place at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Mzuzu. The service, organized by the Catholic dioceses of Mzuzu and Karonga, is being officiated by Bishop John Ryan of Mzuzu and Bishop Martin Mtumbuka of Karonga.
The ceremony is attended by prominent figures, including Chilima’s widow, Mary Chilima. Political leaders such as former Vice President Khumbo Kachale, Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) President Enock Chihana, and his vice, Timothy Mtambo, are also present. Additionally, notable attendees include Agnes NyaLonje, Newton Kambala, Dalitso Kambale, and Jappie Mhango.
The service, themed “Stay Awake,” is marked by its purple color scheme, symbolizing repentance and penance. This theme reflects the solemnity of the occasion as the community gathers to honor the memory of the deceased and reflect on their contributions.
The event underscores a moment of collective mourning and remembrance, bringing together both religious and political leaders, along with the community, to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragic accident.
