The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has once again demonstrated its blatant bias towards the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in its recent statement calling for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to stand independently.

This is not surprising, given HRDC’s history of selective activism that consistently favors the MCP. The organization’s claims of promoting democracy and human rights are nothing more than a façade, designed to mask its true allegiance to the MCP.

The HRDC’s sudden support for the electronic voting system is particularly laughable, considering the technology has been widely criticized for its potential to compromise electoral integrity.

The opposition and various electoral stakeholders have raised legitimate concerns about the system’s reliability, yet HRDC has chosen to ignore these concerns in favor of its political agenda.

It’s clear that HRDC is more interested in advancing the interests of the MCP than in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections.

The MCP’s support for the system, coupled with HRDC’s endorsement, raises serious questions about the relationship between the two entities.

It’s evident that HRDC is merely a mouthpiece for the MCP, parroting the party’s talking points without any regard for the welfare of Malawians.

The organization’s failure to criticize the MCP government since President Chakwera assumed office is a stark contrast to its vocal activism during the DPP’s tenure. This selective activism exposes HRDC’s true nature: a defender of MCP interests, not human rights.

HRDC’s silence on MCP’s governance issues and its sudden interest in electoral matters only when it serves the MCP’s agenda is a clear indication of its partisan bias.

The organization’s credibility is further undermined by its failure to address the concerns of Malawians who are wary of the system. Instead of advocating for the interests of the people, HRDC is busy defending a technology that has been widely criticized for its potential to compromise electoral integrity.

The people of Malawi deserve better than an organization that claims to defend human rights but consistently acts in the interest of a political party.

HRDC should stop pretending to be a champion of democracy and human rights and instead focus on serving the interests of its political masters. It’s time for Malawians to see HRDC for what it truly is: the MCP Defenders Coalition.

The MEC must be cautious of HRDC’s calls for independence, which are nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to advance the MCP’s agenda. The commission should prioritize the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that the voices of all Malawians are heard, not just those of HRDC and its political allies.

HRDC’s statements cannot be taken seriously, given its history of partisan activism and its blatant bias towards the MCP. The organization’s support for the electronic voting system is a clear indication of its allegiance to the MCP, rather than its commitment to democracy and human rights.

Malawians should be wary of HRDC’s attempts to influence the electoral process and instead demand transparency, accountability, and credibility from their electoral commission.

As the country approaches the September 16 elections, it’s crucial that the MEC remains vigilant and proactive in ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.

The commission should prioritize the voices of all Malawians, not just those of HRDC and its political allies. Only then can we ensure that the elections are free, fair, and credible.

The people of Malawi deserve a government that serves their interests, not one that is beholden to the whims of a political party.

HRDC’s actions are a clear indication that it is more interested in advancing the interests of the MCP than in promoting democracy and human rights.

It’s time for Malawians to hold HRDC accountable for its actions and demand that the organization prioritizes the welfare of the people over its partisan agenda.
