Kamlepo Kalua alleges MCP funding independent aspirants to divide opposition votes

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-As Malawi heads toward the September 16 presidential election, Rumphi East legislator Kamlepo Kalua has alleged that Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is covertly funding independent candidates to divide the opposition vote.

Kalua further accused some opposition groups of accepting government money to field their own candidates, claiming the strategy aims to confuse voters and weaken the opposition.

“It is unfortunate that some of our fellow opposition leaders have chosen personal gain over the will of the people,” said Kalua.

While he did not name specific parties or individuals, he called for unity among opposition forces and urged the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to handle the matter with integrity.

However, political analyst Chimwemwe Tsitsi cautioned that such serious allegations require credible evidence.

“Without proof, these claims risk being dismissed as speculation,” said Tsitsi.

He noted that there are no public signs of mass defections or strategic campaigning in opposition strongholds that would support Kalua’s theory.

Tsitsi warned that unfounded allegations could distract voters from critical issues and undermine public trust.

Other analysts echoed concerns that a fragmented opposition could dilute votes and bolster the incumbent government’s chances.

As the election approaches calls are growing louder for transparency and accountability to ensure a fair democratic process.

Kalua recently apologized to the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) for previously accusing the party of receiving a MK5 billion bribe from the ruling party.
