MZUZU-(MANA)-President Lazarus Chakwera says construction of Mpamba-Chikwina-Usisya Road and piped water to Nkhatabay District is part of his vision to ensuring that Malawians have equal access to basic needs.
He was speaking Friday at Chigwere Trading Centre in Nkhata Bay North during a whistle stop tour.
“Just as we have constructed roads and brought piped water to other parts of Nkhatabay and Rumphi, we are doing the same in Nkhata Bay North.
“Since this part of Nkhata Bay you are farmers, there is need to construct factories here so that you process your products right here before carrying them to markets in Mzuzu,” said Chakwera.
Senior Chief Nyaluwanga of Mzgola commended government for bringing development projects such as electricity in the area.
“In Nkhata Bay North we now have electricity. For the first time, people of this area have been granted loans through NEEF. Some areas were hit by drought as such we were also provided with relief items.
“We are now waiting that the piped water project should be completed so that people from this area have access to safe water,” he said.
Aspiring Member of Parliament for the area, Ephraim Mganda Chiume, asked government for renovation of Nkhatabay Jetty saying people have challenges accessing water transport.
“If we can have a new water vessel it will help reduce accidents resulting from usage of unworthy vessels.
“In this part of Nkhata Bay we also desire a technical college,” he said.
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) First Vice President, Catherine Gotani Hara; Minister of Local Government and MCP Secretary General, Richard Chimwendo Banda; Minister of Tourism, Dr Vera Kamtukule; Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu, and Senior Chief M’Bwana were present at the rally.
