LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has emphasized its commitment to transparency and adherence to legal timelines in announcing election results for the recent presidential, parliamentary, and local government polls.
MEC Chairperson Anabel Mtalimanja, speaking during a press briefing, confirmed that the commission will not disclose the exact date when the results will begin to be announced.
“We will not disclose the day we will start announcing the results of the presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections,” Mtalimanja stated firmly.
She urged all political parties and the public to remain calm and patient while the commission completes its work.
Mtalimanja appealed to political parties to refrain from prematurely declaring victory.
“We ask all political parties to refrain from declaring that they have won the election before the official announcement,” she said.
The chairperson reiterated that the commission is strictly guided by the law which mandates the announcement of presidential election results within eight days, parliamentary results within 14 days, and local government results within 21 days.
“We are within the legally stipulated period and we urge everyone to trust the process and the commission’s work,” Mtalimanja added.
