Neno, August 12, 2015: Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Atupele Muluzi says Luwani Camp which is housing refugees from Mozambique needs facility upgrade to fit to the present standard of living.
Muluzi made the remarks on Monday when he visited refugees that are being accommodated at Luwani Camp in Neno district.
He said as government, they have taken advantage of the present situation to note the areas that need attention to make the place better.
“This camp was constructed in the early 90’s and most of the facilities need to be upgraded and I am here with UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) to look at how we can collaborate efforts to improve the facilities here.
He added, “I will focus on ensuring that as a country we are able to provide adequate security for those that are coming from Mozambique and the surrounding communities as well.”
The minister’s visit came amid concerns from the local community over security lapse in the area when the refugees come in large numbers.
Muluzi assured that all necessary measures will be put in place to ensure the safety of everybody in the country.
Member of Parliament for the area, Mary Khembo said the area apart from increasing security personnel, also needs more medical personnel and equipment at Luwani Health Centre so that they are ready to handle the pressure that may come with the coming in of the refugees.
The camp has registered 119 refugees from 28 families with more expected to arrive during the week that will increase the number to about 700 refugees.
Other refugees are being kept at another camp in Mwanza district.
The refugees fled their homes following the unrest in their country as a result of the conflict between government troops backing the ruling Frelimo and opposition Renamo troops.
