There is dead silence from the main opposition, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) at the time their voice should have been echoing the walls and corridors of Capital Hill, the seat of government, criticizing the authorities on bad qovernance.
Social media influencer Onjezani Kenani is trying to fill in, in the absence of the opposition but his is a lone voice in the wilderness.
The opposition is paid tax payer money for effective and efficient checks and balances on government and to speak out the loudest on matters of national interest especially on bad qovernance.
This is the reason their silence is a matter of concern not only for the country’s young and fragile democracy but for ordinary poor Malawians who need voice and protection.
The ordinary poor Malawian wants voices of Richard Chimwendo Banda, Jessie Kabwila and Simplex Chithyola Banda, among others to complement the lone voice of Kenani in pointing out this administration’s shortfalls.
For instance, there is the issue of the Supreme Court awarding the “dead” Finance Bank compensation which financial experts say will be in the ranges of K5 trillion and K7 trillion.
The opposition has not spoken on the matter although there are genuine fears that if the ruling is implemented, it will collapse the already bleeding economy.
The ordinary poor Malawian wants the voices of Honourables Richard Chimwendo Banda, Jessie Kabwila and Simplex Chithyola Banda on this.
Then the Attorney General Frank Mbeta has given consent to Malawi Housing Corporation to buy a new Fortuner vehicle and give a K51 million windfall to former company secretary for MHC Bob Chimkango as compensation for his firing from the corporation although he had only three months to go before the expiry of his contract.
This comes as MHC is struggling financially and amid speculation that the attorney general has lined up such huge payouts to DPP cadres who were allegedly fired by the previous administration.
The ordinary poor Malawian wants voices of Richard Chimwendo Banda, Jessie Kabwila and Simplex Chithyola Banda on this.
I know that morale in the opposition camp is low following the unexpected election loss and the current wave of targeted arrests has forced opposition figures to lie low politically as a matter of political survival in a volatile political environment but besides all those tribulations, they have a job at hand; to speak out on matters of governance on behalf of ordinary poor Malawian.
If this silence from the opposition continues, by the time the opposition will recover from the shock of the election loss and arrests, the DPP would have completely destroyed the country through thieving, corruption, looting and plunder of public resources.
