LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The European Union has made a formal demand for the government of Malawi to repay a staggering 95 million Euros (approximately K380 billion) following the alleged misappropriation of funds earmarked for the construction of the M1 road.
The funds, provided by the EU for the development of Malawi’s critical infrastructure, are believed to have been looted by members of President Lazarus Chakwera’s cabinet just prior to last year’s elections.
The EU has made it clear that no further funding will be released until the misappropriated funds are repaid in full, citing concerns over the dwindling finances and lack of accountability within the Malawian government.
It is alleged that the funds were diverted to support Chakwera’s re-election campaign, which ultimately ended in defeat at the hands of Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s Blue Alliance.
The development has sent shockwaves through Malawi’s political landscape, with many calling for accountability and transparency in the management of public funds.
The M1 road project is a critical component of Malawi’s infrastructure development plans, aimed at improving transportation links and boosting economic growth.
Further details are expected to emerge in the coming days, and this newspaper will continue to provide updates on this developing story.
