Police in Mzimba arrested Madaliso Kumwenda, aged 20, from Thale village, T/A Chindi in Mzimba district for allegedly murdering John David Nyirenda, 69 years, from Kadudu village under the same traditional authority Chindi. This occurred on Thursday 13th August, 2015 at around 03:00 hours at the deceased home.
According to Mzimba police publicist, constable Chiwona, it is alleged that, on this night at around 22:00 hours, Madaliso and his wife went to bed to sleep as usual. In the midst of their sleep, they were woken up by harsh opening of the door by the suspect who had a torch in his hand. Suddenly, the wife of the deceased heard a gunshot and a voice of her husband once before he died on the spot.
After the suspect had left the house, the wife called neighbours who came immediately and followed up the footprints of the suspect and managed to apprehend him and then took him to Mzimba police where he is in custody waiting to appear before court.
Postmortem results conducted at Mzimba district hospital showed that, the deceased died of internal injuries and loss of blood due to the gunshot.
On Saturday, police recovered a gun that was used in the crime, which the suspect had hidden in a maize field close to the house where the incident happened.
According to Chiwona, the suspect is expected to appear before court soon to answer murder charges contrary to section 209 of the Penal Code, which if found guilty, attracts a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
