MaraviPost: According to the press release by statehouse on the latest cabinet Reshuffles, Minister of Health Jean Kalirani has been shifted to the Ministry of Home affairs and Internal Security and been replaced by Dr Peter Kumpalume.
It is no secret that Kalirani was failing at health. Rural hospitals were going without essential medicines and her answer was to blame the old archaic ordering system that her Ministry was using.
A source from within Government has revealed to The Maravi Post that Software solutions developed by a Malawi team would allow tracking of procedures and medicines used in each rural hospital and would automatically trigger an alert if supplies were running low to the central Government. While this solution has been collecting dust it is by far cheaper than any solution that Malawi would buy developed by Westerners who have no idea of Malawi practices.
Atupele Muluzi, who was Minister of Home Affairs has now been pushed to Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development. This is the third time the Minister has been moved making it likely that he will not have any power to influence events. He is never given a chance to stay long enough to change direction and leave an imprint.
DPP loyalist Information Minister Kondwani Nankhumwa has also been relocated to the Ministry of local government and rural development, he has been replaced by Jappie Mhango. This was indeed a good move. Kondwani Nankhumwa was too political and too loyal to the DPP to head a department that should speak for all Malawians not just the DPP. I think local government is suitable for him if he takes his responsibilities seriously, to serve all Malawians in every district regardless of party.
Jappie Mhango hopefully has learned from the Mistakes Kondwani made and he will not be partisan.
