Our leaders are committing a massive crime. The Ministry of Labour is preparing to ship 500 qualified Malawian nurses to Israel.
The government claims this deal will create jobs and bring money into our economy. That is a disgusting lie. This is the calculated abandonment of Malawian citizens.
Our politicians are selling our finest medical minds to heal a wealthy foreign nation while our own hospitals run completely out of staff and our people die.
The state says we have a “surplus” of unemployed nursing graduates. This is a fake surplus. We do not have too many nurses; the government simply refuses to hire and pay them. The data shows the real, terrifying truth.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Malawi has only 6.6 healthcare workers for every 10,000 people. This is less than half the African average (15.6) and far below the global average (49).
A single healthcare worker in Malawi is forced to take care of 1,495 citizens. The safe global standard is 1 worker for every 204 people.
Across the nation, between 64% and 77% of critical healthcare jobs are completely empty. The patient-to-doctor ratio is also terrible. There is only one doctor for every 50,000 Malawians. This is ten times worse than what safety rules demand.
Our public clinics are already falling apart. Sending 500 nurses away will turn these understaffed buildings into actual morgues.
A major Afrobarometer study found that 81% of Malawians face a severe lack of medicines or supplies when they go to public hospitals.
Fully 60% of Malawian families go without necessary medical care at least once a year because clinics are empty shells. Basic antibiotics are properly stocked in only 27% of health centres.
Because the system is starved for cash, desperate patients face extortion. One in five Malawians (21%) report having to pay a direct bribe to health workers just to get basic medical care.
Malaria causes 40% of all hospital admissions in Malawi. Yet, our broken district hospitals are so understaffed that less than 25% of them can adjust nursing numbers to care for dying patients.
This is not the first time Malawi has exported citizens to Israel. Previous deals managed by private businesses ended in absolute disaster for our youth.
Malawian farm workers were dropped directly into active conflict zones. They were forced to live in terrible housing with filthy sanitation.
Abused, cheated out of their overtime pay, and desperate to survive, over 700 Malawian labourers ran away from their contracts into the underground or begged for political asylum to escape slavery.
The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) repeatedly slammed the government for keeping these deals secret. The state hid the contract details and provided zero legal safety nets or rescue plans for citizens trapped abroad.
We demand an immediate end to this human auction. The government must stop acting like a cheap labour broker and fix our homeland:
Government must use national funds and foreign aid to immediately employ the 3,000+ jobless nurses into our empty clinics.
It is also vital for government to forcefully stop public health workers from running private pharmacies on the side. It must make sure that state medicine goes to poor patients, not private shops for profit.
Malawi government must provide immediate rural hardship allowances and proper hospital equipment. It must stop our talent from fleeing to other countries by treating them like human beings at home.
In conclusion, Malawi government is urged to outlaw all private recruitment agencies sending citizens abroad. Any future deal must be transparent, run strictly by the state, and reviewed by medical unions with iron-clad safety and return guarantees.
