LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Parliament has adjourned sine die after a busy Third Meeting of the 52nd Session, with Speaker of the National Assembly Sameer Suleman commending lawmakers for completing key legislative work, including the passing of 12 Bills.
The House adjourned on Friday, August 7, 2026, following an extension of the meeting period after it was initially scheduled to run for four weeks
The extension allowed Parliament to complete outstanding government business and other legislative duties.
In his closing remarks, Speaker Suleman thanked President Arthur Peter Mutharika for supporting the work of Parliament and approving the extension of the sitting period, saying the additional time enabled lawmakers to conclude important national business.
He also praised Members of Parliament (MPs) for their commitment during what he described as a demanding and intensive meeting, urging them to continue prioritising issues affecting Malawians.
The Speaker challenged parliamentary committees to move beyond routine work and focus on urgent matters affecting citizens, saying effective oversight was critical in ensuring government remained responsive to people’s needs.
He said the current Parliament was committed to doing things differently by strengthening representation, legislation and oversight, while acknowledging growing public interest in parliamentary proceedings through increased viewership of parliamentary platforms.
Concurring with the Speaker, Leader of the House Jappie Mhango praised MPs for their dedication and cooperation in ensuring smooth conduct of parliamentary business during the meeting.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Simplex Chithyola Banda used the sine die adjournment to call for continued focus on issues affecting Malawians during the parliamentary recess, urging Members to remain connected with their constituents and ensure that Parliament continues serving as a voice for citizens.
Chithyola’s remarks came as Parliament prepared to go into recess, with the Speaker also reminding MPs that parliamentary work would continue through committees and other activities even when the House was not sitting.
The Speaker further commended parliamentary committees, including the Public Accounts Committee and the Ad Hoc Committee investigating the Chikangawa plane crash, encouraging them to complete their work before the next sitting.
He also raised concern over absenteeism among legislators, describing attendance in plenary and committee meetings as a fundamental duty that affects public confidence in Parliament.
