Malawi Government says it will not condone any indiscipline that some teachers are doing in the country.
Deputy Minister of Education Vincent Ghambi said this in Lilongwe on Saturday when he presided over a 21st Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) General Congress.
Ghambi said it is worrisome that some teachers have thrown out of the window their teaching code of ethics and are indulging in different bad behavioral practices.
“Teaching is calling, teachers should lead by example by maintaining their code of ethics, we hear many bad stories concerning teachers raising from having an affair with a girl child and impregnate them that’s not the way teachers behave” said Ghambi
Ghambi’s remarks come after a certain teacher in Mulanje is being accused of wounding a learner at Njedza Primary school.
On his part Teachers Union Malawi President Chauluka Muwake expressed concern over government’s delay in recruiting the newly trained teachers and taking on board teachers who have just been promoted after undergoing interviews.
He said he fears that very soon these teachers may forget what they learnt in college.
” there is no way trained teachers could stay in the village for years without working because if they are idle as it is the case now chances are high that they will lose information concerning their profession” Muwake said
He further said he sees no reason of not recruiting them as there are many teaching vacancies due to retirement and deaths.
According to Muwake this is so because of inefficiency at the ministry of education, and to them as TUM will continue their duties to provide Checks and balances.
This year’s TUM general Congress was held under the theme “Empowering TUM structures, building a sustainable union”
