The Malawi court in the central district of Kasungu on Monday, November 16, sentenced a 20 year old man to 10 year in jail for being found guilty of defiling a 14 year old girl.
Kasungu Public Relations Officer, Edwin Kaunda, confirmed to The Maravi Post the conviction of Yamikani Phiri who committed the offense early this month, November 2015.
According to Publist Kaunda, the court head that in October, this year the convict went to Kasichi village where the girl was staying with her parents and proposed marriage to the girl which the victim accepted as Yamikani cheated the girl that was not married.
“This happened when the Yamikani wife was at her home village to see parents. However, upon return from the family visit on November 5, the wife discovered that her husband was staying with the girl. When the wife questioned the presence of the strange girl, Yamikani couldn’t give proper explanation.
“The development prompted the convict’s wife reporting the matter to Chulu police unit in the same area for help. The two lover birds were called at the police consequently Yamikani was arrested and the girls underwent medical examination at Chulu health Centre which revealed that the two were having sex”, explains Kaunda.
On November 10, the convict appeared before Kasungu Magistrate Court the where he pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement.
In passing the sentence on Monday, November 16, 2015, his worship Damiano Banda said that defilement cases in Kasungu were rampant such that the courts needed to give stiffer sentences to the perpetrators of these offences to protect the young girls in the communities.
Yamikani Phiri hails from comes from Ngwelero village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Kapelura in Kasungu district.
